...

"Why don't you just make it a fixed without best offers? I give you a pretty strong offer and you just declined without even giving me a counter."

It's not..."Hi, how are you? I'm interested.....etc.

On top...I listed something to start auction at $280, he offers me $250...and replies with this like it's a reasonable price.

It's just amazing how people feel entitled and have no idea how to communicate with the world.

Just Block/ignore the buyer if you want but three things:
1. This message is a lot more down to business than “Hi, how are you?”. This isn’t Facebook.
2. Why not counter what you’re looking for? Didn’t seem like the offer was a total joke.
3. Just move on if you don’t want to deal, this isn’t really something shocking or rude.

So saying Hi or SOMETHING instead of coming out swinging at someone is related to Facebook? It's called courtesy/professional/manners, etc

A lot of people still aren’t used to auctions with a BO, they’re wired to everything being a BIN or BO. If it was a $280 BIN or BO then the $250 would’ve been a strong offer so I’m guessing that’s the disconnect.

No it wasn't $280 BIN... It is STARTING BID at $280

I get it... If I am saying BIN for $280 and someone offers $250...that is not bad.... But having the starting bid at a good amount higher than someone offering a lower amount then???

Yep, I know it wasn’t a $280 BIN. I’m saying the guy that made the offer probably was thinking that.

Yeah, I get it...but I will probably get a lot of backlash here... But I guess I'm old school.... If you message a stranger and you want something... Have manners or be humanly instead of spouting out darts

It’s ebay. If someone uses punctuation, it’s a good day.

Agreed Jazzer. I have a pair of shoes listed and I clearly state in my description I will not be taking any prices lower than my starting price and if they don't sell at this price I will be returning them for a full refund (they arrived with a stain on them).

Guy messages me within minutes asking me if I'll take 40 less than my starting bid.

Whut?

Part of this is eBay's fault. It was hard enough to get buyers to read the description when it was on the same page. Now they've started hiding it in a separate link.

So why didn't you make them a counter offer instead of just declining?

So why didn't you make them a counter offer instead of just declining?

Why should he have to? From what I am gathering it was an auction the seller STARTED at 280.00 and the buyer offered him 250.00. It was not a fixed price listing so there was no Best Offer option.

I would have personally blocked him.

Yes, eBay starting the stupid thing where unless you choose to shut off "No Offers"... It will Automatically allow buyers to offer even on auction style.....UNTIL someone has a bid, then they cannot make an offer anymore.

It's stupid, but you have to physically turn that option off Everytime you list now.

I'm not going to counter when somebody offers LOWER than a starting bid... That is stupid

I also got another message after I mentioned this to them...and I got more backlash from him, so unnecessary hostility for someone who is butt hurt not getting his low-ball offer in.

....AND, about 20 mins later...somebody bid on the starting so he became another to block

This is why I hate selling on eBay. I have a card listed as BIN/BO and a user made an ok offer so I countered figuring we’d meet in the middle. He barely came up so I countered in the middle and sent a message with it saying I’d meet him in the middle. He countered back at the same price I had just countered back from without a message at all. So I declined and then he sent me a message explaining to me what my card was worth and why. I thanked him for his opinion and told him I disagreed. Two days later he sends me another message telling me to let him know when it doesn’t “sale” Bc he’d buy it at his price. I told him that wouldn’t be happening Bc I didn’t need the money that badly and he has been added to the blocked list. If he had simply said anything instead of just countering at the same price I might have accepted, but since it came across as rude and then when he tells me what he thinks my card is worth, nope not selling it to you.

It is back to my original post...it's all about communication and general manners.

Unreal how computers, phones, etc destroy the sense of realizing your talking with people.

I am a teacher, and I always say "Good Morning", etc... And amazing how they don't say anything...but if they want something, just blurt it out without saying excuse me, sorry to interupt, or anything....just "I want, give me!"

You haven't seen the auctions you can make best offers on? One of the weirdest things eBay has ever done.

I have not paid any attention to them, other than mailers its been about 3 months since I bought anything on Ebay and I start 99% of my auctions at 99 cents

The weirdest thing they will do is when they start telling sellers what they have to sell their items for and mandating those prices. That was announced in the Spring update, just has not been implemented yet. So under that change the way it sounds the OP may have been forced by Ebay to sell it to the buyer at the price that Ebay decided. Ebay claimed they will make up the difference to the seller, but I would not hold my breath on that one.

Please tell me you’re kidding. I get the try relisting your item x amount lower messages but haven’t read anything about them forcing people to sell at a particular price.

Looks like they have reworded some of the information on it, also not seeing anyting on the removal of the restocking fees. Now they are saying that if the item is not priced within a range they feel is correct the visibility could be greatly affected. So that bears the question will the system recogonie the differences in graded card and raw? Variations of the same item? Or anything else that could make your item more expensive.

Just announced last week in the summer update were some changes to the return policies. They are doing away with 14 day returns mandating they all go to at least 30 days.

Also they will be comparing your return rate with other sellers and will be basing your search placement on them. So if you get a false not as described return which is common in some categories then you could be punished even more even though you did nothing wrong.

There are other crazy changes in the works as well so this one maybe one they could not get set right now and will be in a future change. Wait until they do away with Paypal as the main method of payment in a couple of years.

My area of sales has a high cost of shipping and I offer free shipping which could have a negative impact on me. My prices at first seem much higher than some who don't offer free shipping. For example same items, I charge $50 free shipping, they charge $25 and $25 shipping. I sure hope ebay factors in both scenarios as the same price.

Obviously from my recent thread questions I have had to deal with a decent percentage of SNAD cases. I have already gotten two false cases, I won them both but only because I got lucky with ebay technicalities and my stubbornness. I do have to check and make sure they didn't count against me though.

Siding with the buyer.... He asked why you didn't give him a counter.

If you have a problem with someone asking why they didn't get a counter, that is fine. Sometimes they don't deserve to be answered because they are lowballing....

But just because you start something at 280 and someone offers you 250, that doesn't mean they are lowballing. 280 may not warrant a bid ever being placed on the item. I see $30.00 items listed for $300.00 all the time.

Granted his communication doesn't seem to be the best, your interpretation of the situation and way he should act is way off.

I believe he said a bid was indeed placed after the low-ball offer. I dont think his interpretation is off.
