This October we will be welcoming my first son into the world. With this I would like to do something special with 2018 cards. Looking to see if anyone has any cool/unique ideas of what I could do. I am a Cubs fan if that helps in any way. Want to do something different then put the Topps set together and a couple of Cubs team sets. Willing to spend some money but don’t want to break the bank either.
Thanks for the ideas in advance!

Just and idea that I did with my first son.
I'm a Bengals fan and for some reason wanted him to be on to.
Anyway what I did was collected a bunch of Bengals Players
Letterman patch autos to spell his name. I then framed it with a
Newborn Bengals Jersey.

My son was born last April, and I had the same idea. Before that time, I had been a primarily vintage and 90s collector, without much of a modern collection. So what I tried to do was put together a modest modern collection that one would have in 2017. For starters, I picked up a bunch of 2017 sets (went a little overboard and ended up with about 25 different ones). Also, there were 6 Topps Now cards on the day he was born so I grabbed all of those. I also focused on rookie cards of the bigger players, picking up Update RCs of Trout, Keyshawn, Scherzer, Betts, Altuve, Harper, etc. picked up autos of players like Judge, Kershaw, Correa, Lindor, Bryant, Bregman, Etc. Ended up getting several other Trout RCs. Also picked up some prospect autos of guys like Devers, Verdugo, Tatis, Chavis, Kingery, Bichette, Marian, etc. Also picked up what I saw as a couple of the cards that for me really defined 2017, an Acuna BC auto and Ohtani Mega gem. I will continue to pick up the major sets every year, and some key RCs, but what I hope is to one day be able to give this all to him and have it be kind of a view back into the game, and the hobby, when he was born.

That's a good idea.
And I'm in the same boat for setting my son up for a lifetime of crushing disappointment.

I like the idea of getting all the Topps NOW cards offered on his birthday.

Yeah hes 10 now and I'm pretty sure he resents me for my bad fandom decision. Hahahahahaha
He does still like collecting Bengals players though.

Maybe a PSA 10 graded team collection chrome of all the Cubs... blue of course
How cool would it be if they won the World Series this year!
A lot of cool possibilities!

I was lucky he had 6 on the day he was born! It also kind of got me going on TN, and picked up several more throughout the year, following Judge’s season and notable callups primarily, as well as some of the WS cards. I think TN is a cool way to remember the season, some things happened that will likely be forgotten over time but I think it’s a cool way to look back.

These are great ideas. Especially the Topps Now on the day he was born. Topps now on big moments good idea as well. I really like the idea of putting together a nice collection of who the stars are this year and focusing on the rookie class. Maybe I'll work on Bowman Autos of everyone except Ohtani. Don't want to overpay for that one.

Funny thing is I said the same thing my entire life about being a Cubs fan until 2016. Always so upset about my Dad brainwashing me.

Great idea as well. Could frame it up afterwards as well. Maybe with the Letterman of his name.

I framed my son’s very first pack in a shadow box. I also displayed the Kershaw he pulled in the pack:

There is something special about baseball that creates a bond between a dad and son. I don't really think it will matter much what cards you start collecting for him as long as its something you do together and enjoy. Who knows maybe he will not have the same interest as you in baseball cards. So many options for kids nowadays but if he does enjoy doing it with you then I am sure no matter what cards you buy to start his collection they will be the right ones. My dad passed away a few years ago and my most cherished cards are the ones he bought for me for a xmas present or got at a card show for me when I wasn't looking. I think what is important is that you do it together. Teach him about the game and collecting. Me and my dad would work this big strategy out before we went to a card show then would talk who we thought was the next big thing or next HOF. I loved those talks and still miss them to this day. So I guess what is important is that you do it all out of love and the love of doing whatever makes you both happy cause you are doing things together. Best of luck to you and hope your little one enjoys the game as much as we all do and the love of collecting. I always liked this story I found one day. I made an card album for my friend who had a son and included it as part of the album. Pretty much sums up alot of what collecting probably means for a lot of us.

Here is what I did for both of my kids when they were born: My family is all Indians fans. So I got the 25 man roster from the year I was born and the 25 man roster from the year each one of them were born. (just went by the opening day roster, plus a guys I knew were coming back from say an injury in the spring) I bought a rookie card for each of those guys and then put those away to maybe see what happens in the future.

Deep thoughts! Yes that is the ultimate goal. My brother and I are actually the ones that got my Dad into the hobby about 20 years ago. He still collects some but it is always fun to talk about what we are doing with our collections or what we are in the market for. Same conversations I hope to have with my son years from now.
Thanks

I did two things. First, my son's initials are KB so Kris Bryant was the first player that came to mind. It helped that he was born in 2016 as well when the Cubs won it all so I was able to pick up a nice Bryant rookie chrome and then several of the Bryant Topps Now moments from that playoff run.
Second, he was born on the 27th of the month and 27 is pretty much synonymous with Mike Trout in the baseball world so I had to find him a nice Trout. I went with a Trout that clearly shows the 27 jersey number on the back - the 2016 Topps Chrome where Trout is scaling the wall to rob that homerun. At some point, I hope to create a rookie card for my son with a picture from the day he was born and then have all 3 cards (Bryant RC, Son's RC, and 2016 Trout) framed together and put on his wall.

look at us chicago folks linking things together. love it! my son was born in 2016 and we only told everyone the first letter of his name 'W' (his name is winston). anyways as the season went on and playoffs and the run to the title it obviously became the year of the W for not just me and my family but cubbie nation. i bought a bryant/rizzo auto game 7 base relic from the topps now set as a memory.
cant go wrong with bryant if you plan to stick with cub players. cant go wrong with trout either and if you dont have one already this is a great excuse to pick up a us175.
congrats and good luck

My son is 12 now and a big Red Sox fan. How I don't know? We live in NY and I myself am an A's fan. I have been picking up 4-5 David Ortiz PSA 10's, BGS 9.5/10's and LOW # Parallels each year when I can find a deal on ebay or this forum. He actually up to a little over 40 Graded Papi's. Not a bad start for a 12 yr old. He like to show them off to his buddies. Got a few (1/1) Plates and he thinks it is so cool that that were used to print all the other Papi cards of that set. He has a couple friends that are Sox fans and they are quite jealous.

I set up at a show over the weekend and a daughter/father bought a decent amount of stuff from me. The father explained that she actually got him into baseball and the hobby. It was really nice to watch them go through boxes together and the excited commentary about cards or players they’d share back and forth. I definitely cut them some good deals!
