View Full Version : Now that the Draft is complete, who will be the biggest hobby stars
tjforce

Two questions within one:
- Who will be the biggest hobby stars out of the gate
- Who will be the biggest hobby stars by year end.
Take into consideration team, playing style, draft position, etc. What ever you want.
The few that stand out to me:
Ayton: Obviously being the top pick will lead to strong sales right off the bat, and Phoenix could be a fun team to watch.
Doncic: I think doing to Dallas was huge. If he had gone to Sacramento I'd be afraid he wouldn't get he attention he'll be getting now. An exciting backcourt with Dennis Smith, a Euro following, and the chance to learn from Dirk is going to get collectors excited.
Wendall Clark Jr.: Bulls draft picks sell, and this young team might finally be getting things together.
Let's hear some thoughts

Zaire. Athletes always sell well early on bc of highlight plays. He may only have a josh smith ceiling and be a hobby zero in 3 years but I see him getting attention year one.

Ayton seems like he's gonna be a 22 and 10 type guy right away. It'll go nuts for him.
Lonnie will sell well. Hopefully I can get something of him.

None of the bigs unless Bamba develops an offensive game.

The sad truth is even though Ayton is gonna be extremely good, the price for a center will only hype for 1 year.....just take a look at KAT, Cousins...

Short story, I think guys with best chance to drive hobby include Ayton, Doncic with wildcards on Young, Sexton, and maybe Knox.
Ayton- Being #1 pick helps, going to Phx does not. Still if he puts up 17/10 going to be hard to ignore.
Bagley- he's going to have to probably be ROY to get a ton of love since he's in SAC.
Trae Young- I'm on the fence here. He's a hit or miss prospect to begin with, then he goes to a team whose best player is a PG. I could see a cult following though because he's flashy.
Jaren Jackson- early on, I don't see him being a hobby hit. Needs to develop an offensive game.
Doncic- If I had to vote on the sought after rookie, it's him. He's going to a place where he will play, and he will attract an international audience. If he's anywhere close to All-Rookie team, his cards will dominate the hobby.
Bamba- no. At his best he's DeAndre Jordan, who is a helluva NBA player, but not much collector value.
Wendell Carter Jr.- there is a chance. Chicago does well in collectors worlds. Short term I like his collector potential more than long term. I see him as a complimentary at best NBA player, not a franchise/hobby mover.
Collin Sexton- all depends. If LeBron goes, he will have a chance to be ROY. He would be the ball dominant player and be given the reigns to be the team leader.
Kevin Knox- Early on, its most likely Porzingis is out, so Knox may be relied on heavily. If he shows well in Summer league, hes a darkhorse ROY candidate, add in being in NY and he could be a collector favorite.
Mikal Bridges- Love his potential as a 3 and D guy, but even in the extreme off chance he ends up being Klay Thompson, well, that's not moving the bar in the hobby.
Shai-Giligeos- my nominee for best investment. Kemba is still there so he's going to come off bench. But if/when he starts, you could see real production and a huge jump. So early, I think his card's go cheap enough to stockpile and hope.
Porter Jr- the biggest wildcard. Could drive the hobby, could be injured and not play early (See Embidd, Simmons), or could be a cheap investment. I have no idea.
Of the rest, if any move the needle in the hobby maybe DiVencenzo- he's a likeable guy who people fell in love with during March Madness. I don't think he will be given the chance to star though.
Someone above mentioned Zaire Smith- I don't see it at all. I think he will be a valuable NBA player, but he's going to a team that already has stars, and is thinking of adding LeBron! Plus he's not a scorer. He projects as an Avery Bradley/ Tony Allen type. Most recent example is MK Gilchrest who at his best is a fine role playing NBA player, but not a franchise mover at all. He simply won't score enough or feature on his team enough to have hobby influence. He'd have to have Kawhi Leonard type development that nobody expects.
Finally, I know Lonnie Walker will sell. Why- cause I'll be buying! lol

Hmm, a lot of meh teams at the top of the draft, unlike last couple years...
I hope Panini includes DiVincenzo's girlfriend on his Bucks cards, it's the only way one will sell, he's gonna be terrible.

Shai G-A is a Clipper.... which I'm pretty happy with. I think he has some upside for sure.
I also think Lonnie Walker and Zhaire Smith will be fun to watch to see if their athleticism translates into hobby love.
I think Doncic is the best player in the draft, and will be the one you're hoping to pull after the first month or two of the season.

Personally, expect Trae Young... Guy will produce massive "fake" numbers just like Devin Booker did. From a PC Standpoint, I am not going to go balls deep on the guy, but will pick up the essentials as I do with any Hawks Rookie (Prizm/Optic Rookies, NT RPAs, Contenders Prizm Autos, etc.)
@Longshot - Trae Young will be the starting PG next year. Hawks have made it very clear they are parting ways with Schroeder and are trying to make a trade to get rid of him after the fallout between the two and the off-court issues.

I agree with this. I feel like early in the season especially they're going to put the ball in his hand and say "go". I'm not sold on him - Or the Hawks whole "next splash brothers" thing. Personally i think the Hawks had one of the worst drafts by a lottery team. I don't see it with Trae Young. Kevin Huerter is nice but feel like he is/was being highly over rated - but at 19 he's probably the safest of their pics. Spellman? Really? Spellman? They could've picked him up in the seoncd round. That was a horrible pick.
They passed on so many good players at each spot. Maybe I'll be wrong about young. But really at best i see a Lou Williams clone.

historically its always gonna be the SG/SF's that end up being the most sought after, regardless of how well Ayton does
This means likely Doncic, Knox, Bridges

I don't generally care about hobby value BUT I'll share my opinion anyways.
Ayton - KAT-lite similar value hobby-wise
Bagley - Might have some decent value up front but just don't see him as a hobby star, will fall off hard after the initial 1st season hype
Doncic - Hobby super-star, better buy in early because this dude is going to be a top 5 player in a few years
JJJ - Going to memphis really doesn't help his value, he's going to be an after thought unless he's an offensive superstar which probably won't happen.
Trae Young - will be insanely hyped up before the season and might put up some hollow offensive stats but don't see much long term value.
Mo Bamba - I see AD in a couple years if he can refine his shot. He probably won't have much value yr 1 being in Orlando and not having a great offensive game yet but I see huge long-term value potential
Wendell Carter Jr - Don't really see much value potential. Will probably be a really good player but not flashy and won't draw much hobby hype
Collin Sexton - If the Cavs keep LeBron, they're going to the finals again and if he has 1 good playoff game his value is going to explode. I see really good value potential here based on his situation and personality
Kevin Knox - The obvious NYC hype is going to drive his prices way up. Has anybody ever had a long-term increase in NY? Unless he's a super star from day 1 it's going to be a slow value drain
Zhaire Smith - Big time value potential here because he's a fantastic athlete and good dunker. Will probably end up being in the dunk contest

Confused with some people saying guys will sell strictly on their dunking/athleticism.
You see small spikes but nothing significant. A guy like T Ferg was a perfect example. Had some nice plays, got some playing time but only saw a tiny spike.
Only guy I'll be buying next year is Shai

No, I agree. The whole draft by the Hawks Front Office was miserable... I was very upset. Young is just such a risky pick. To pass on Doncic to grab a kid who had really a good "half" season then implode is awful. Plus they acquired a "protected" 1st round pick, meaning that we have a chance of not getting the bonus... This pick will be one that everyone is going to look back by the end of next year and see what happens. Heurter is our safest pick. He is young, but is not a game changer or playmaker. Spellman is just an idiotic pick. They spent a 1st round pick to acquire a guy who won't be seen in the league for 2 years and will have a ceiling of a bench/role player... The guy won't even start.
I mean ESPN analytics has Young similar to Trey Burke... TREY BURKE. What the hell are you doing here...

Probably Doncic. Maybe bridges.
LW4 if he's healthy and Pop doesn't cut the whole team after Kawhi leaves.
Ayton maybe.

Not anymore... at least I hope!
I think there are a lot of players that will have a good amount of all star berths between them but not necessarily be hobby superstars. It reminds me a lot of 99-00, a ton of really good players and some nice hobby love but not the log term stardom. That year you had Brand, Steve Francis, Baron Davis, Odom, Szczerbiak, R.I.P. Hamilton, Marion, Terry, Maggette and some other good role players but no one had long term star power. But it was one of the deepest drafts in history.
MP JR could be a great player if healthy.
Doncic could be a really good player and have some following but I don’t know if it will be superstar level.
I could see Trae young loading up the stat sheet and getting some serious hobby love.
A dark horse star could be Miles Bridges. He has a nice shot and is crazy athletic, reminds me of a stockier Vince

As a Hawks fan, I was so, so, so disappointed.
Was really looking forward to Doncic. I could see Schroeder, Prince, Doncic, Collins as a nice group. Now we have Trae Young, who could easily not be as good as the point guard WE ALREADY HAVE AND ARE GOING TO TRADE FOR NOTHING. Hopefully Young is better. He can shoot, but I thought his best chance of being successful in the league was not to be in a situation where he had to be the guy. I look forward to a ton of 6-23 nights.
I don't know a lot about Kevin Huerter but I doubt we can play him and Young simultaneously. Reminds me a lot of the John Jenkins pick a few years back. What baffles me is the story that we were going to MOVE UP TO TAKE HIM.
Spellman is the kind of guy you take if you have a team that needs quality bench play. We needed to take a swing for the fences.

The entire draft was a disaster. Guerrero is the only reasonable pick but even that is questionable. Spellman is not a 1st round pick at all, you don't waste it on a guy who isn't going to make any impact even to the bench for 2+ years. Young is such a hit or miss that you don't risk a 3rd overall pick on... this is going to be very bad...

How does Devin Booker put up “fake numbers”. He scores efficiently from all areas of the court with a terrible team. He has been surrounded with some pretty bad players, especially point guards. He’s barely 21 and averaged 25-5-4 with d league pgs lmao.

I laughed my arse off when they compared Porter Jr to KD..so disrespectful! best basketball player in the world today.

I don't know how you don't see similarities between Bosh and Bagley. I don't see any of Tim Duncan in Bagley's game. As for the second comparison, it's what they have done with any 6'9 or taller SG/SF thats come into the league since KD. I'd rather them use Paul George than KD because none are as offensively talented as KD.

Honestly I think the Bosh comparison is apt. I think that's his ceiling. And to be honest that's very good.

Fake numbers refer to dropping massive numbers because you are the only player on the team who can. You exactly made my point, he is the Suns offense and continually drops big numbers but still lose. That's what "Fake" Numbers reference. When you shoot always and are the go to man on the ball because your team has no other players to go too, it's deemed "Fake"
Young will be the same way. Hawks will lose but he will just have the green light to shoot always.

Yea, maybe I shouldn't compare him to Duncan b/c Duncan was that damn good..both are acc player of the year unlike Bosh!

Whatever! Bagley played better than Bosh at college level.

Since everyone is debating futures, or lack of, I will add something slightly different. Trae Young is an ugly young man. I’m sorry for judging a player on appearance, but it had nothing to do with the shorts.

You must not have watched much of Duncan, he was the opposite of Bagley. His game was based on Almost no athelticism but fundamentals, amazing footwork, one of the best defenders the game has seen and had a really nice mid range jumper and a ton of post moves. Bagley is basically the opposite of all of that.
Bosh comparison makes sense but bosh was a better shooter. Bagley probably has more athleticism than Bosh did.

I know, I know..Duncan was 3 time defensive player of the year in college right?
I guess Im trying to say Bag is a better athlete than Bosh.

I personally think Booker is a good player too, just by the way he plays and the all around game.
