View Full Version : Time to open the case that’s been sitting on the shelf for 3 years - EMINENCE

Really long story short....

In 2013, I talked some coworkers into buying some cases of original flawless and holding them sealed for a while for resale. We crushed it. The value increased by 40-80% in a matter of a few months. I made a few guys thousands of dollars and they just sat back and thanked me. It was awesome.

Fast forward to the end of 2015, and eminence was announced. I thought we might be able to do the same thing again. But when I saw the checklist, I was disappointed. Only two rookies. No logomen. No dual logomen Autos.

Such a bummer.

I let the guys know that I didn’t think the investment would pay off and that it was a no go.

A couple of hours later one of my buddies texted me back. “I’m sad. I really wanted to buy some. I just really like the look of eminence.”

I was sad too. I wanted it to be great. I hoped it would be better, but as I dissected the checklist, I found it compelling.

We kind of talked each other into it.

I bought three cases. Two for me. One for my buddy, Rem.

A couple months after purchasing the cases, I opted to trade my cases as part of a package to get the Kobe championship tag auto /2. But that still left Rem’s case.

I’ve listed it for sale several times, but between ebay and PayPal fees, shipping, risk of loss, we haven’t found a domestic buyer that would make it worth while.

So, that brings us to tonight. Rem just finished his PHD, and it’s time to celebrate. I’ll get the video up first think in the morning.

Subscribe now!

Also you must have some reputation for your coworkers to be able to drop thousands on some cardboard (esp if they’re not into the hobby)

What big hits are still left?

A bunch of the cut autos have never been tracked:

-Elvis
-Honus Wagner
-Nelson Mandela

I’ve only ever seen 1 of the Kobe and Curry Tags (which would be amazing if Adam pulled the 2nd Kobe). I also may be wrong and both Kobe’s may have been pulled.

Then there are a few USA 1/1’s that haven’t been seen. I know Adam has the Bird, but I think a Stockton or Malone would pair well.

Best of luck!

DISCLAIMER#1 - We had my eight year old record with my phone while we opened..... this is not a high quality video. Clearly I need to teach my kid to hold a camera without blocking the lens. My daughter randomly walks through a few times to make faces on the phone camera Rem had set up.... yeah, this is kind of what you get from a guy with 3 kids..... sorry. Not sorry.

DISCLAIMER#2 - Rem and I were pretty hyped after totally geeking out to the draft. We had too much fun with this. Getty school children.

FINAL DISCLAIMER - I only bust a box every two or three years. I absolutely am addicted to it, but I know it's not an experience that satisfies, but only leaves you wanting more. So when I do it, I really take my time and have fun with it. Don't judge me.

Without further ado, I present to you a video that I think you will enjoy. It's nearly ten minutes long.... but let me give you some advice.... turn up the volume...... and just watch it.

Finally figured it out. Seriously, sorry for the ROUGH quality.

25 shares at $106.23 a pop

I'm glad you mentioned this actually.... but lets actually revise this a little bit.

You have to look at how many times the Disney company has split.

Here's the split history.

https://www.stocksplithistory.com/walt-disney/

25 shares in 1940-something are actually equivelant to 100,264 shares today. Isn't that nuts?

So the current value of 25 shares of disney in the 1940's is actually $1,067,313.69......

Seriously..... how awesome is that?

Not sure if Rem will sell it.... but if he does, we'll find out!

I know that the Eminence Wilt's sell for a lot more than other Wilt cuts, and that the last couple of the bigger guys like Charlie Chaplin ($5101) and Harry Houdini ($4550) have done really well.... but I have no idea how Disney will compare.

But yeah, Rem may have me sell it today, or may just hold. Totally up to him.

Insane hit. Also incredible that you managed to reveal it last. Obviously you had a 50/50 shot to do so, but it definitely upped the entertainment value significantly! That, in a nutshell, is why those of us who love to bust wax do it. Financially it's a loser far more often than not, but how can you put a price on entertainment/enjoyment of the process?

Cuts from this product seem to go a bit higher than the same cuts from other products. I imagine it has something to do with the box tag price. Did some digging on worthpoint to find a comp ,but didn't have much luck. I think it'll out sell both of these.

Found a dual autograph. Went for $2200 ,but seems a bit low. I think the 1/1, (non-dual), unique document, and high-end product premium is a game changer.

While I find some of the sets in eminence lame, they just nailed it with the cuts, and the checklist. I understand that we are trying to open a basketball product, but the idea of pulling an autograph from someone who was so significant to history as many on the checklist are really breaks up the monotony of hitting yet another Larry bird auto. Eminence also brought a high end set that finally doesn't use exclusively white. You could argue noir, but I think noir sucks and doesn't have that high-end feel.

As someone who occasionally dips his toe into group breaks, we really need another basketball product like this. I'd much rather have a chance at home runs like this and go hitless, then hit some $25 auto out of NT.

Nice pull!

Im in the minority on pricing I think, the Houdini and Chaplin have amazing eye appeal in comparison to the Disney.

You could be right. I don't follow celeb/historical figure cuts. Was just interesting Walt Disney wasn't as available via cut signature as you would have thought when looking back on worthpoint.

The27guy, is your guy keeping or selling it?

Update- Rem asked that I sell all of the cards but the Robinson. He would have loved to keep the Disney, but obviously the money is helpful after a 5 year doctorate degree. Should be fun to see what it goes for. We have no estimate in mind and so we just sent the cards to a consigner.

Thanks again for all the kind comments and views on the video. We had a blast and were glad to be able to share in the fun. :)

The27guy, what those cases cost on release? Been eyeballing one. Really last time Panini tried something different highend wise.

My last eminence card.

Thanks for the video, great to see true excitement in opening as ALL of us do when we get a fresh box in our laps! Nice to see you picked a good first name for your son too! (same as me)

What an incredible card and finish to the box, has to be one of the best feelings to put a top 3 card of an entire product. Congrats to you and Rem!

Grats on the pull.

It's a damn shame they can't fit WD's full signature on the card.....
I typically see $1500-3,000 for Disney items, cuts on the low end, check on higher end...of course full docs may be more...
Because this is a 'card', it's likely going to sell for more...my guess 2500-4k

I have a 1950's era Disney Album Page auto, with Ray Bolger on back (Wizard of OZ Scarecrow)..... If anybody ever wants Walt Autos, google Phil Sears....
He is THE Disney Auto Expert...

Eminence cuts bring a premium. They've been tough to pin point price wise. I like to think I'm pretty good when it comes to values ,but this ones a toss up. It could get stuck around 2k or go for 5k. One thing I know is Disney collectors don't mind spending some coin ,so that's a good thing for the seller.

Yea, not many people get to say they pulled a Walt Disney 1/1 autograph. Video and story alone worth was worth it in itself.

I'm calling a last second run up on it. My guess will be $3225.00.

I still have people making deals with me point out my low itrader feedback. I have 35 transactions of $1000+ cards so I'm not as reputable as the guy with 314 $5-10 transactions apparently.

So from that total, you have to pay Probstein 20%? And then taxes per coach. What do you really make back on it?

Hey brotha. Sorry, but it already sold via probstein as Max mentioned. If it doesn't get paid for, they'll auto-relist it. I'll PM you if they do.

The case was definitely a net loss financially (BUT TOTALLY WORTH IT FOR THE MEMORY). The Disney certainly saved us, but in the end, the case returned just a little more than an average case of Eminence, about 70%. Average cases return about 60-65%. The issue is that most cases with cuts only have 7 cards, and so the 3 missing cards at an average of $300 really hurts. The other 6 cards were nice but only the Magic was an above average sale. We were fortunate that the cut was one of the nicer ones because there are some that are $200.... eek. The worst cases of Eminence are the 7 card cases with a $200 cut and $1,000 worth of other stuff. That's a 25% return. OUCH!

A few people here wrote that the Disney was a top 5 card out of the product. While we appreciate that sentiment, the cuts really aren't where the big money out of Eminence is - from a numbers perspective, I'm not sure it was a top 100 card out of the product. Definitely one of the coolest cards though!

Houdini and Chaplin autographs skewed my guess a bit.
James Dean sold for 2k after you pulled the Walt ,so I think your buddy did quite well on it.
