I've been giving a lot of thought lately to these cards and their values in the future.
The more I think about it, I just can't imagine future generations will pay premium prices for "event" or "player worn" relic cards.
On the other hand, I imagine we'll see a real spike for actual "game used" cards of high caliber (multiple all star, HOF caliber) players.
Anyone else have strong feelings about these cards today and into the future?

NO FUTURE :coffee:
I do believe that more & more collectors will:
- collect cards which are not autos or memos, no matter if it is game-worn or event-worn (the vast majority of collectors are taking only design into consideration)
- buy now & then real game-used stuff with a certificate of authenticity (Meigray & co.)
Memos are already dead, except some really specific ones (pieces of Finals or HWC jerseys for instance).
Patches are cool & all, but people will always prefer a 5 colours event-worn patch than a 2 colours plain "game-worn" patch (which game? is it the jersey the player is wearing on the card? so many doubts about the origin imho)

Going to have to disagree with ya on that. Respectfully of course.
When I was collecting gu cards (patches/jerseys/relics/whatever, I defiantly preferred the jersey price to be really colorful and have a million breaks in it.
BUT I’d never ever prefer an event worn incredibly nasty patch over a game used plain jersey piece. The only reason I at one time collected game used cards was because I wanted to get a piece of these players and games that I absolutely love watching/discussing. I wanted nothing to do with “event worn” or “player worn” stuff. It was either game used or I wasn’t interested.
Which is why I stopped collecting jersey cards entirely. When panini got caught putting Walmart jerseys into their cards, I just couldn’t trust any of them any more. So I sold every jersey card I had and now just collect on card autos.
Annnyway, that’s my take.

NO FUTURE :coffee:
I'm not full on no future. But i am leaning towards very few will maintain value. There's just too much out there. Player worn will continute to go down. Traceable patches and unique patches will hold value but be dragged down by the overall glut of memorabilia. And while we're at it sticker autos are gonna drop like rocks too.
jersey cards out, base RC's in
Base rookies and rare inserts. I can already feel the shift happening amongst collectors. Even Panini can see it happening. More and more products are having "case hits" and ultra rare inserts.

Panini should like it since they don't have to purchase game-worn (or event-worn) material. Collectors only want rare inserts and parallels with some creativity and aesthetics in the design, as well as on-card autos.

My guess is for basketball, Panini will do what they did for Football......Legends cards will be Player Worn, Rookies will be Player Worn (already are) and the Current players will be Player Worn or in some cases Game Worn.
They will then label all cards as Player Worn and never have to worry about getting wrong patches in the cards ever!
It wouldnt surprise me if they eventually go down the whole Player Worn path sometime in future.
One way of cutting your costs massively. Instead of buying a Larry Bird game worn jersey from an auction house for $5-10K, they can but 20 throwback jerseys of him and get him to put them on for a fraction of the cost as Player Worn......that's their memorabilia content for him over the next 5-10 years.

Panini Guy: "Hey Larry, we're gonna ship you 10 jerseys. Try each one on, then return em to us."
Larry: "WTF?"
Panini Guy: "And BTW, if anyone asks, you're still a player. Hence the jerseys will be player worn."

Are we excluding rookie year stuff? I don’t see NT RPAs going down anytime soon and that’s event worn. Or does a on card sig cover the fact of a photo shoot swatch? Or being a true RC always suffices in spite of the relic? Just curious about the line being drawn.

Can't speak on basketball, but there was a time when I could take any number of player, event worn/used jersey/relic cards to my LCS for store credit, but these days they won't accept jersey or relic or patch cards unless they specifically say game used, and even then they are extremely picky.
My thinking is that unless cards containing relic memorabilia are certified game used, they will be viewed as worthless. It certainly feels like it's trending that way.

It's dead and buried, this is why I stop doing the giveaway since no one likes them.

Some interesting answers...What I've been considering for my own collection is:
does the market for GAME USED (not player/event worn) Tom Brady, Michael Jordan, Gretzky (iconic HOF caliber players') cards have room for growth?
I think those cards could see a major bump in the future.
Thoughts?

At this point I want to see a date of use (basketball) or dirt from the game on the material. They are charging absurd prices for essentially fake crap.
