Hello all,

I bought a box of Mars Attacks The Revenge when it first released. I really enjoyed the base set and parallels, but was overall disappointed with the value for the price. Most sketches I saw pulled were crude black & white line drawings and the manufactured relics are a bad gimmick that Topps keeps giving us as “hits” in almost every single sport and non-sport release they produce.

Anyway, prices finally came down to earth and I decided to buy some more boxes to chase one or two green sets and collect as many parallels as I could. I pulled three silvers and a small handful of coppers, with the average amount of the other colors. I haven’t collated my greens yet to see if I have a complete set.

The hits results are about what I was expecting. Mostly B+W sketches and my fair share of medallions. Admittedly, the UFO medallions are pretty neat but the rifles are silly. A metal version of the logo would have been more appropriate.

I keep most of my Mars Attacks stuff, but I’d be interested in trading for or buying gold parallels, a color Len Brown autograph and a printing plate.

All whining aside, I love Mars Attacks and this is the best release since 2012 Heritage and I really like the configuration as opposed to a standard pack format, but this is a $40-45 box, not a $70-80 box.

I almost wish they would have kept sketches out of this product, or at least dictated they needed to be full-color. The cartoony nature and colorful artwork of the original Mars Attacks series shows that b&w just doesn't work well.

That tank is...something.

You hit it on the head.

Mars Attacks is a franchise that started with one simple trading card set that the entire focus was on the unique and controversial artwork. An entire franchise based on 55 small pieces of art. This franchise - more than a lot of others out there - should have a higher bar for the quality of sketch or original art it contains.

Exacerbating the ridiculousness of the tank sketch is that this is a set that features an entire parallel set consisting of nothing but PENCIL SKETCH versions of the main set. That asinine tank can't even hold a candle to the pencil art in the base set.

Granted, sketches are still hot right now and collectors would have rioted if this didn't include sketches. BUT... if this set was $40 on release and contained nothing but the set, pencil parallel and random additional numbered/colored parallels, I would have eaten up cases of it. The only other enticing things to me would be printing plates and creator autographs.

Mars Attacks and Garbage Pail Kids are Topps' own franchises and should always be treated with care for the fans, but 2012 Heritage seems to be the only release they've done totally right in my opinion.

I will say, as a proper "sequel" to the original set, Revenge is pretty awesome.

Sick Tank. looks like a Panzer to me. Goes great with the gun medallions. All jokes aside, I was thinking about picking up a couple boxes in the low 40's as well. The value is there, just not sure I can accept that they allow sketches like that tank in there... I like the Great Wall of China sketch, is that Shaow Siong?
