View Full Version : Silver Prizms...when is the bubble going to burst?

messier2

I had a lengthy conversation with a LCS owner last week about this. Collectors like to collect what is hot...this was/is hot. But, how long will it last.

This year, it seems like there were thousands of silver prizms per player (perhaps I'm exaggerating, I don't know). Yet, prices were very high during the peak periods in the season.

I have been slowly "dumping" my silver prizms in favor of buying colored prizms that have a stated serial number /xx). At least I know for sure how many of each card was made.

What are everyone's thoughts on this? How long will the bubble last?

I don't think they ever burst. When you actually bust a few boxes the top RCs are very hard to pull in anything but base. Not everyone can afford high end and I think this will become a staple RC as long as Panini holds the license. IF Topps Chrome came back it may take a minor hit.

tough to know...the silver prizms are beauiful because they match nicely with the chrome refractors...

i think there will always be an interest to silver prizms aesthetically. maybe they will come down a little but star player silver prizms should remain sought after.

17-18 Prizm has already dropped unless you're looking for Mitchell, maybe Tatum.. I haven't checked in awhile. 18-19 will be hot again but will start dropping a few weeks after release like it always does. After month 2-3 the only cards that go up in value are the most hyped guys, everyone else drops like stones.

Now, if you're talking about when silver prizm's in general will drop, that's a different story. Last season there were likely 2000+ silver prizm RC's produced and print runs have basically gone up and up every year since 12-13. So that trend will likely continue if demand keeps increasing, and all signs point to the fact that we're most likely in another "junk wax era" right now so I don't see it slowing down in the near future. 10-20 years from now the only guys that will hold values will be the HOF players (or players on their way to the HOF) out of each draft. Assuming there are any out of the draft class of course. 12-13 "might" hold more value than other releases just because it was the inaugural release and there are definitely a lot less out there. Just check pop reports on BGS/PSA.

A good comparison IMO is Durant. His Topps Chrome refractor RC is /1499, yet still holds value and is steadily increasing due to his career path and all but guaranteed HOF status at this point. But other than Durant, try to find another rookie from 07-08 who's refractors are worth more than $20.. Same type of thing is going to happen with silver prizms.

I think it makes sense to put serial numbers on all cards that aren't base. In football, all base rookie cards in prizm are silvers. Makes no sense in football.

Yeah i stopped buying new football products. There's no value there resale is terrible. Prizm BB all you need to do is hit one of the top 2-3 rookies or several top tier silvers and you can break even or come out ahead. There's great value in Przm BB and it's a fun rip as well.

Good points guys. I agree with the thought that people are getting tired of autos. But, there is always something about autos...on-card autos to be specific that I prefer over shiny cardboards.

With that said, is anyone buying/hoarding silver prizms of your guy this off-season?

Unless Optic makes a move on Prizm down the road (is released before prizm?). It's topps chrome refractor reincarnated.

Print run may be a bit inflated compared to older chrome refractors, but the fact most Prizm rookies have a ton of career time left on them gives them buy low/sell high opportunities. Unlike retired or vet topps chrome refractors. Also more basketball prospectors than ever.

They are the non auto/rpa rookie card to have. The silver prizm frenzy will return on a yearly basis.

If LeBron could mold Ball into Kidd that make things interesting.

Kuzma and Ingram are gonna be fighting for points with LeBron. LeBron has never had another big scorer along side of him consistantly. Maybe Wade for a bit.

I highly doubt they will take a minor hit if Chrome comes back solely because those Rookies wills till be the "premium" rookie to get of that year.

To answer the question, I have a feeling that Prizm won't really ever burst, but it is possible that Optic may overtake Prizm as "THE" rookie to obtain outside of RPA's and Contenders Premiums. As some suggested, Basketball is slowly becoming a "Rookie" hobby, where Autos may not maintain the same value as other sports. If you collect anything else outside of Basketball, most sports deem "Rookie Autos" as the "Rookie" to have of someone. The only other sport who arguably doesn't do that is Hockey, but that is not such a huge market compared to Basketball, Baseball, and Football. When you talk about Baseball you see "Bowman Chrome Autos" as the "True Rookie" to get. Here, we see a massive shift in which Non-Autos are actually the premium card, and that is very refreshing for me. When I buy a box of Prizm, I do not have to worry about my value all relying on an auto. I could pull a crappy auto of the legend Chucky Brown, but 1 Silver Prizm of Mitchell just made my box.

I don't think collectors/buyers will be quite as aggressive since everyone has a feel for it now. Obviously the first few will go for crazy premiums ,but I think they'll stable out a little quicker.

The bubble bursts each year with Silver Prizms. Like many people have posted, most of the cards go way down from release to the end of the summer. Doesn't take away from the fact that it is the mid-level standard RC and every basketball collector knows it. Also, any time a newbie asks what the must-have card for rookies in basketball is, the answer is always Silver Prizms (and NT RPA's). Silver Prizms will be the standard for a long, long time.

Quick thought on Optic vs Prizm. It reminds me of Bowman Chrome vs Topps Chrome back in the day.

Were they or are there just more people hopping on the Prizm train like myself who didn't care about basketball prior to last year? Could it just be way more product being busted? I can't say because i didn't buy any Prizm before last year. The products popularity seems to have exploded though from what i've seen. Like silvers were harder to pull in general or just rookies?

I stopped collecting baseball and moved to basketball. Was sick of $2 chrome autos in my boxes. Lebron James base cards are $2. With the way 90's inserts sell for basketball compared to baseball it was a no brainer to change what I collected. I keep all.refractors, inserts, jersey cards and autos. Base cards get donated. It might work out for me in 20 years being able to cash in on some stuff. If not oh well, still have fun.

yes, they made far less 2016 Prizm

it also was not the juggernaut that 2017 was. 2016 was readily available at retail throughout last winter

also, "starbursts" in 2016 Value Packs were not well received. RW&B was the standard since 2013, and Panini F'd up by not issueing them in 2016

You can’t guage too much of a print run for retail and hobby simply by your personal luck. Especially with the amount clearly produced. Look at the amount graded vs any other year. There are A LOT of them. Silvers used to be rare. Now they’re not. Plain and simple.

No you're right i have no idea the print run. But there's a lot more people jumping on the Prizm train as well opening a ton of this stuff compared to previous years if i had to guess. People who didn't collect basketball before last year started because of just Prizm alone. I have no doubt the numbers are up but if they made 2000 or 3000 or whatever is that really a lot for 10's of thousands of collectors worldwide? Whatever the numbers are i don't see Przm hype slowing down anytime soon.

Way more produced. Panini recognized the increased demand and turned up the presses. 16-17 was certainly hyped as well but as pop reports indicate there was almost certainly less produced. However, it’s not like there’s any shortage of those either, lol. In 10-20 years we’ll likely look back at these seasons (and the next few at the very least) as the new age of overproduction. Or “new junk wax era” if you’d prefer. A lot of people who collected in the 90’s are coming back into the hobby so it makes sense. I’m one of them btw, lol

When all is said and done Panini will have released around 30 different products this past season I believe. They have almost every release “sellout” so to speak. To distributors at least. But they’re churning all this stuff out to meet demand because demand is up.

I agree with the part about 2017 print runs being up, but if a Silver Prizms are THE card to have (other than super high end) then it's reasonable to believe the top guys will hold value.

As far as panini releasing 30 products goes, much may fall by the wayside it's hard to imagine that collectors won't focus on a few key brands. Prizm is likely one of them.

How many 1986 Fleer MJs are out there? 2003 Topps Chrome Lebrons?

These still get top dollar because collectors focus on them as THE card to have.

Am I right?

Yeah I totally agree with you. Besides high end like NT, these will be the RC’s to own IMO for guys that make it into the HOF or gain legend status. But everything besides those few guys will be worthless imo. Check out my earlier post where I was talking about 07-08 Topps Chrome Durant refractors and how he’s gone up but basically no one else from that season is worth anything. And those were /1499. Next season we’re probably looking at double that I’d bet, lol.

What's the cheapest Lebron RC auto? $1500ish? That's just too expensive for most people starting up a Lebron PC when his nice non-auto RCs graded Gem Mint go for less than a third of that.

I pretty much agree with that, but guys in under the age of 24 or so will keep holding value in hopes that they turn into the next Steph Curry or Russell Westbrook.

If they turn into the next JR Smith, on the other hand, good player but no where near a star, they're not holding value.

But if I'm holding 5 Silvers of 21 year old prospects, 4 wind up being average and the other winds up being Curry then I made a killing.

Yeah I agree, however, it really depends on what you bought in at I guess. If all those silvers cost you 1k let's say, and one guy makes it big, selling his stuff has to make you at least 1k to break even, right? Even if you only spent a couple hundred on his stuff because you still bought all 5 players. If he's Curry, that's probably netting you some decent return, but if he's Wade (not knock to Wade whatsoever) then probably not. The top of the top hottest guys are pretty few and far between is what i'm getting at, sometimes even despite accomplishments on the court. But yeah, can't really write off anyone until they are past their prime and we can look back on their career, or they take off in their prime like Curry has.

I personally collect Prizm rookies just to have a nice looking card of each guy. I've been collecting Prizm silver RC sets (or as close as I can get) since the 13-14 season and still do despite my wallet not really liking it much anymore, lol! However, I do find the prospecting side of it interesting which is why I like following the trends. Making money off cards is always nice! Plus, if I ever had to sell to fund some other chase, or just because I needed the money, it's nice to have that one big guy like you said. It would make all the rest of the $ you spend worth it. At least to some degree. :D

Ya but how many guys are sellIng for 1k?

I'm taking about paying market rate for, say, an Ingram, Booker, Jamal Murray, Markelle Fultz and Jayson Tatum. Might cost you about $500 for raw copies total.

One of those guys wins MVP in a few years it'll come close to paying for the whole bunch.

I don't wanna pop it. I spent a ton on Silver's last year and hope that the bubble doesn't pop..........

I wouldn't say they're real easy to pull good rookies. Myself for example i only collect J. Tatum and im selling everything else. I probably spent $5-7K on Prizm last year and only pulled 2-3 Tatums. That's including retail and hobby. I probably did about the same for all the other top tier rookies. I didn't pull dozens like some people would like to believe. I wish i did though.:)

Imagine what your Tatum collection would look like if you had dropped that 5-7k on Ebay singles? Or even team case breaks? My strategy is to take the money spent breaking wax, and let the hobby come to me.

I just came up with the number based on 5 silvers of 5 players so I think I may have misread what you said there.. my bad. If you're only talking about 5 silvers, one of each guy, then yeah 1k is a bit off unless it's a Simmons, lol. But yeah, if one blows up next year even you can sell just that one to cover the cost. Better return with 5 though.. :D

I think with Silvers (and everything), the key is buying in low. There are some of the $5 Silver Prizms that will jump to $20+, some could reach $100+...that's the worthy gamble in my eyes.

Buying in at presumably near "peak" pricing is a tough venture to ask for return.

A couple of good/great games can spike a $5 Silver to $25, but a couple of good/great games isn't going to take a $100 Silver and make it $200, let alone $500.

Small gains to be made on the top picks and big gains on the Curry, Kawhi, Westbrook semi-sleepers. Its about that cut and dry.

*top guy could end up being LeBron or Durant which obviously changes things.

**always short term gains to be made from every draft when someone has a good.run even if they end up a run of the mill player.

I think your approach to Silvers is off. The key to investing into Silvers is finding those players who are cheap that can go off. It's very similar to prospecting in Baseball. Many of those cheap silver stars that sell for $5-15 could all of a sudden bump up to $30-40 if they have a good streak. For example, look at Taurean Prince last year. His Silvers were literally bargain bin buys and shot up to $20-25 when he had that offensive surge in January/February. Another is Terry Rozier, etc etc.

For my investing, I did not touch any of the Big name players because those Silvers which line at $100+ won't have that high of a peak compared to someone who is a $5 silver.

Other than pack pulls, ive only "invested" in 3 silver prizes.

Myles Turner in July '17 for $14-20 each. Devin Booker for $60 the night he went off for 70 points and a Ben Simmons PSA 10 Silver I picked up for $325 back in May '17.

I'd think my approach has worked pretty well, no?

Whys Ingram go for so much more than Ball and Kuzma.
I know someone's gonna shine with LeBron. Ingrams the current favorite price wise.

2016-17 Brandon Ingram BGS 9.5 Prizm Silver Rookie (https://bit.ly/2lUwNYQ)

*other two are getting about half that.

Kuzma picking up a little steam since the trade. Ball hasn't budged.

IMO Panini should NUMBER the rookie card silvers out of 999. Would add tremendous value and prices would stay strong.

I use to think this but if you use Curry and Harden topps chrome base /999 /500 values it would say otherwise.

Well Turner is considered one of those "cheap" Silvers to invest in. Booker investment appears to have happened after he had that insane night, which I assume you picked up very quickly before the rush of people. Simmons was an interesting player because his Silvers dropped very significantly but shot up after a great year. Did you hold onto the Simmons or quick turn around on it?

I think what I am trying to put at is that the "long-term" investment in Silvers are not the way to go. Buy them low and sell high just like prospecting. You do not hold onto the cards typically after they make the Pros, you generally let go when prices spike and demand is high.

We've been down this road before and some of those say since they are all cut from the sheet, then Poopanini includes them all in packs. I disagree. It's not like we've ever seen the bread company not put all the cards in packs, right??? #paninirewards

At any rate, it FEELS like for every 3 coach silvers you hit a rookie silver......whether or not it can be proven is another thing.......
