With 5 hours to go buyer bid.... then once the auction ended he sent this message.
Had plenty of time to message me or plenty of time to cancel the bid.

That has happened to me but there wasn't enough time to get to my laptop and retract, I messaged the seller and never got a reply so I bit the bullet and bought it. That's what the buyer should do, but I wouldn't block them for it, personally

I would be more suspect if his bid was cancelled with less than 5 hours to go. WOuld look like shilling or something to many bidders. That mistake happens so just cancel and relist.

It's sad that people made it so people cant even give people the benefit of the doubt any more.
I'd say honest mistake and i wont be blocking.

Looks like an honest mistake to me and no reason to put them on the blocked list.
The last copies have sold from $26-42, so this is not the buyer bidding on a Michael Jordan Auto /5 and claiming they meant to bid $16.50 instead of $1650, this is a sub $50 card and common sense by anyone suggests that it is an obvious error to accept and move on.

His bid was not placed with 5 hours to go. His bid was placed with less than 2 minutes left.. At the time he placed his bid it was showing less than 16.00 dollars so 16.50 would have been a reasonable bid for someone hoping to snipe it.
He had no time to cancel or for you to retract.

No when the 17.00 bid was placed the highest bid was 15.00 so it would have been 15.50 or 16.00 (cannot remember right off what that increment is.) The 1650.00 bid was made and it immediately showed the 17.00 bidder to be outbid. Then came the nibbler.

The jury has spoken ;)
I haven't had this happen to me, but I think I read it's possible to offer the second bidder the chance to buy. Has anyone done that and how do you do it - is there just some button you click (in case I ever run into this)?

It is possible, but rarely do the under bidders buy. If you look on these boards many here will automatically assume the item was shilled when that happens.

Agreed. Shilled or not it’s not a valid auction.
When the top bidder is a shill / fake / non-payer, the new closing price should be one bid over the third bidder - not the second bidder’s max. But eBay would make less if they implemented that feature honestly.

This solution might not be fair to sellers in non-shill situations, since the rise of the bid price might have also kept out other buyers in between one over the third bidder, and the ultimate high bid amount.

I was very much surprised to see how high this ended as well. Needless to say I am disappointed to whatever the real reason was that now I have shown a sold item on my ebay, and then now I have to relist the item right after, I hate that it shows that on my ebay page and wish that non paying items were not shown as recent sales, that's a problem I believe ebay has to fix.
And I did send a 2nd chance offer out to someone I believe who bid only 1 dollar under the highest bid, which does look like it makes it shilled so I doubt this person will not be purchasing this card. and it now does not look good on my ebay page that an item sold then it has to get relisted right away, which does looks like it was shilled which is not fair to me.
I have enough feedback though that I don't think it should effect the new auction too much, but if people on here think that I shilled, that is false, I have no reason to shill a card up to get me an extra 20 bucks? that is a waste of time and not worth it because 20 bucks is nothing lol.
But yes it is possible it was an honest mistake, and maybe I should not have jumped to block the buyer, but if he made this mistake once its possible it could happen again and its not worth the risk so I will still have him blocked.
I appreciate all of the feedback and discussion though!!

It could happen with anyone, all it takes is missing a decimal or having fat fingers.
why did you say his bid was placed with more than 5 hours to go?

Because that’s what I thought I read, I think I misunderstood when the bids were made. I’m not sure I understand when bids were placed when people do max bids .
So your saying spencr bid before rob and kevi?

Look at the actual bid history on the listing. It shows the actual time the bid was placed.
You listing ended at 8 Jul 2018 at 5:47:42PM PDT
Robelon placed his bid after that. Kevi's bid was placed before and was a MAX of 17.00 but because there were no contesting bid above 15.00 it was showing at 15.50 when the erroneous bid was placed.
The winning bidder placed his bid with 1 minute 34 seconds left. He did not have time to retract or cancel before the bidding ended.
