View Full Version : Can someone shed some light on this Othani card

So I am an Angels fan and have been buying Ohtani parallel RC's this year and yesterday when I was looking at newly listed, this 2018 Topps Chrome Series 2 RC popped up. I bought it right away because I liked the picture of him hitting. The seller says that this card came in a factory set, however, none of the factory set variations that are listed on Cardboard Connection have this type of special bonus inserts. The Target one has chrome cards but they are of 2017 rookies. I saw there is a Devers up and a Clint Frazier sold for 12.99. I can not seem to find anymore information on them anywhere. What do you guys think? The card is #700 just like his normal Series 2 base rookie.

The 2018 Factory sets just came out. The retail version has 5 photo variation rookie cards in them. This is one of them apparently. I didn't realize they would be Chrome. If the "photo variation RC's" are going to be regular Topps Chrome cards Im going to be pissed though. .
EDIT- Well apparently not, the factory set photo variation is not that card. Looks like someone got a Topps Chrome RC early somehow.

I took that as the 700 card factory set. I wonder if by some mix up, some of the photo variation RC's got mixed up with Topps Chrome somehow.
If the card is actually #d 700 Im lost as to what it could be.

Exactly! this is what I thought too first but then I realized like you did that his TC rookie card would not be #700. There aren't 700 cards in TC. This is very weird

Could it just be Rainbow Foil, and the seller is just calling it Chrome?

Yes this is a special insert card in WM sets. Some target sets have special Rookie Cup cards for rookies from last year. There should be parallels included that will be hard to hit.

I have bought 2 sets from them with these cards. You get the 1-700 base set, a pack of 5 rookie variations, and 1 chrome RC card. I got Hoskins with my first one and I'm leaving the 2nd set sealed.
Are there any parallels or anything? Anyone know how many in it?

Those are in the "5 Pack" of variations. No parallels.

No. The "5 packs" are the rookie variations. Also included with the set is 1 chrome card. That card is the same as the ones in the "5 pack" only they're chrome.

Each set comes with the 5 card variation pack found in all the retail sets. However, this Walmart exclusive set includes 1 Rookie Variation Topps Chrome card. There are 6 players in the set Ohtani, Devers, Frazier, Rosario, Robles and Hoskins.
I didn't realize until after I opened that there are also Gold, Orange, Red and Superfractor parallel's of the cards. They are extremely hard to get though.
Gold Refractor 1:41 Sets
Orange Refractor 1:81 Sets
Red Refractor 1:391 Sets
Superfractor 1:1,951 Sets
I did pull a Robles Gold Refractor out of my 4 sets.

The chrome cards do not have the same picture as the cards in 5 card variation pack. They are completely different photos.

How did you find out about the refractors? Other than the gold you pulled that is. I found nothing on the box or inside that mentions the refractors.

The odds are on the side of the box. Its in very tiny writing so hits very easy to miss.

Sure wish these were in the standard factory set long box. I buy a factory set every year and this set in a big squarish box just wont go with the rest of my sets.

Found 2 tonight and pulled an Ohtani Chrome and Hoskins Chrome. Both are available if anyone is interested....;)

How do the value of these compare to hand collated set?
Also, any idea how many photo variations Ohtani has using the standard 2018 Topps text/border? Feel like I’ve seen at least a dozen now!
There's a gold Robles #/50 on eBay now. For the first time ever, i think the gold refractors are ugly. I don't care for that graphic I'm the background at all. Hoping they grow on me but if not it'll save me a lot of money when tc comes out

Is everyone buying these sets and opening or is anyone keeping them sealed? I'm wondering how the value of these (sealed) will grow compared to the other retail sets.

I went to Walmart today and they had two sets left. I needed the Acuna RC for my PC and decided not to buy one on ebay. I bought one set and I think they are a pretty good value.
I pulled the Acuna, Gleyber, RC Variation pack, and Chrome from the set and left the rest in it's box. I pulled a Clint Frazier Topps Chrome Refractor (Frazier and Amed Rosario were the two I did not want). One Frazier has already sold for $16 dlvd though, but I am keeping mine.
Overall, I'd say they did a good job on making me purchase the set because of the variations. #thankstopps
