I want to put together a nameplate for my son. I will need eight letters. I'm trying to decide if I should pick up singles, or buy a case and flip what I don't need. I figure I can buy all of the singles for between $40-80, depending on who I pick up.

If I were to buy a case, what kind of return could I expect on the 42 or so cards that I do not need. I don't expect to make money on a case break, but I'd have to be killed on this project.

Thanks for any advice.

Hard to say honestly. On ebay I'd say your looking at 4-10 per card shipped (on average) but collation and what you get really vary. Good or bad I've got 2 cases in bound and you could use those for a judge (guessing Thurs delivery and break).

If you are just focusing on a nameplate you'd do fine with eBay, ads here, and COMC to pick up the singles to construct the name. A full case is a decent value but it's hit & miss on value.
Out of 50 cards I would think you'd be able to break even with a nice assortment of /20s /5s and a few popular names. It probably won't get you a nameplate right away.

IMHO,

My goal is to spell LAWRENCE. Going by ebay and the FS section here, those look to be fairly common letters. If I have a good chance to recover at least $220, a case would be worth the risk, and the fun. This would be my first case purchase, so I'm a little hesitant to jump on that slippery slope.

considering some of the /5 autos have been going for under $8, I would not assume that you would make money

many of the non /5, non /20 have been getting under $2

of course, there are a handful that could get you double digits

recommendation = singles

I think singles are the way to go also, unless your feeling lucky. Though if you buy a case I'd be interested in some singles, for my name also, just not looking to spend a lot on it

COMC has all of the letters I need. Would the cards arrive in the magnetic holders, or will I need to but new holders? If I need holders, which point size would I need?

Arrange the cards to spell a name. Some nice examples have been posted around here.

No I get that part but depending on size and specific players it can vary enormously so I was really interested in the "cost" aspect of it. But I guess that's just up to the individual huh?

Yes they can. Plus side for Razor Letterman, they're probably the cheapest examples of auto'd letters you'll find (which is really interesting given your looking at auto'd cards with a print run of 50 or less). Think this is also the reason they are so interesting to guys as they can do complete a goal under any budget. I think this product is about to explode again given spring trainig and think this year we'll start hearing about a lot of these players (some we have already).

I've got a small fortune into these, but they look great, and still trying to find more :)

I think I'll stick with singles this time, but a case sure was tempting.

Has anyone pulled a "J" out of this product?
