View Full Version : Talk me out of selling my Lebron PC

I've been bumming a bit on picking up any new Lebron cards since the move to L.A. was announced. I started my PC right at the Championship in 2016, and have been full steam ahead. I checked eBay for listings many times a day, every day for a couple of years. I know he's cemented his name at or near the top for all time in the NBA. It is just hard. I PC a few other guys, so I can always divert attention there for a while, but it has been weighing on me whether or not to part ways with most or all of my PC. Not that I haven't sold off duplicates in the past, but this would be different.

Can anyone talk some sense into me?

I will note that the reasons are not financial, so that does not factor in.

I am not sure what to do with your Lebron PC. I do know what to do with your green PMG that is NOT Lebron.......... LOL!

Even though you said it's not financial I do think it's important to take that into consideration. Once he retires and has no more new cards, it'll be a lot pricier to pick up his stuff than it is now.

Plus, when it's all said and done I can't see Lebron winning multiple rings with the Lakers, and I think when people look back they will see his days with the CAVS as the defining portion of his career. His Cavs cards will always stay relevant in that manner.

Easy HOLD

i understand if you are a Cavs fan being hurt NOW, but in 20 years you will look back fondly on his years there, capped off by winning the teams only Championship

Also, once he retires, no more NBA cards. its been nearly 10 years since MJ had NBA cards available, and that makes me sad

I say hold too, especially without financial need. That can change and you'll be glad to have them and likely be able to get more for them in the future. Easy enough to store them out of sight if you are bumming about choosing the Lakers.

If you're not really feeling it, sell while the gettin's good. No sense holding onto them if they don't bring you some enjoyment.

easy sell.....x2. stock at an all time high. real estate at an all time high. Lebron cards at an all time high and have not missed a final since 8 years ago. If you think all of the above will continue then hold. if not then sell.

So what are the reasons?

Do you hate the Lakers?
Do you fear a certain outcome will take place like he becomes irrelevant and a 2nd round out in the West?
Are you turned off by him leaving in general because you are an Ohio guy?

I’m just trying to say that objectively if this is an emotional reaction to him leaving for really any reason like say....

A month ago you loved him
Now you’re like meh

I’d hold for awhile and see how those feelings develop over time.

You might regret it later if you act too quickly.

Ask yourself how you’d feel about your pc if you sell it and he dethrones the Warriors and wins 3 more titles and becomes a Laker great. Not necessarily financial but you might miss having those cards and feeling part of the rush.

Or if you keep it and he ends his career being ran down in the media constantly because he can’t get it done like Kobe and or Magic and is compared to them constantly and thought of as a failure.

Let's assume he ends his career at 3 Championships. With 2 of those being in Miami, do his Miami cards start getting more love or will they always be second, um third, fiddle?

if anything I'm collecting more. Already ordered a Lakers jersey. Can't wait for 2018 cards.

I was bitter during his Heat years and didn't pickup any of those... I've let go thanks to the 2016 title. I'm rocking with the Lakers as much as the Cavs this year.

I've wondered this too. He was at his physical peak with Miami and he won 2 championships. I do understand why his Cavs stuff is preferable, but his best seasons were in Miami and people treat those cards like there's anthrax on them or something.

Both BRON & Tom Brady have had their best "winning years" behind them (sure Tom CAN win more, but you know what i mean)

Those two are now each marching up the "all-time" statistical lists in their respective professions

with each game played, stat accumulated, they each grow

i would think it is NOT the time to sell (if you must, that is different)

You’re a fool if you sell. Guys like MJ, Lebron, Brady are the easiest holds in the hobby.

Sell a few you aren’t in love with to finance your other PC guys for a short period and give yourself a chance to breathe before selling any others.

I would sell just the fact like what people have said..it's at an all time high. But then again, he has 4 more years in LA to prove himself again that he's one of the GOAT. I would just hold the next 4 years and see. Like everything else, when a player is out of sight, they are out of mind. Just like Kobe, I don't see his value increasing and will most likely stablize.

I currently feel we’re in another “90s-esque” card boom. The economy is good right now and a lot of the guys who collected in the 90’s are back in the hobby with a lot of disposable income. I’m one of them, btw, lol. But really, just look at who all these $300, $400+ boxes of cards are marketed to.. it certainly isn’t kids. And at 30+ basketball releases a season now, the demand for basketball cards in general is certainly going up.

Who knows how long this will last, but there will likely be another 2000’s era at some point where the supply and demand changes. Now, the question is, if you hold past that, say 20 years down the road, will this LeBron stuff bounce back or even be worth more? Who really knows. But if you’re goal is to sell to fund other PC’s you certainly have supply vs demand on your side of the court right now and that may not always be the case.

Impossible to answer the question without knowing your reasons for wanting to sell.

Just because LeBron has left Cleveland doesn't mean you have to abandon your cards of him.

He's still a Cavs legend.

Over time, his best cards will pick up even greater value, as they have done for Kobe, Duncan and other recent superstars.

Bingo, I'm also one of them, but once demand plateaus (maybe with a leaner rookie class or two) and we hit another recession, look out below. Give Panini credit though, they're milking us while they can.

Thanks for weighing in. I think the smart move is to hold, though the heart move is to sell. I will just be patient and see how I feel after a little more time passes. Maybe the National will push me in the right direction. Last time it was here, I ended up starting my Jeter PC.

I hear you. I'm not sure if the younger generation will be interested in this hobby as the older group.

20 years from now, they will have better technology and 3d printers. It might be a lot easier to make your own foil type and refractor cards at home. Do you think the demand can change in the future due to better home printers?

It really depend on how long you want to "hold" since the card market will fluctuant based on UD and Panini's supply/demand, overall US economy, and whether or not he can carry the Lakers to a championship in the next 3 years.

my predication on his key cards (topps chrome rc / SP auto / ultimate auto / Panini stuffs / excluding exquisite):

1-3 Year - up a little from current market value (he will get a pass for the first 2 years with the Lakers even if he can't reach the finals).

3-10 Year - down from current market value (If he can't get pass the Warriors within 3 years then collector's $$$ will go towards other new and upcoming stars. EVERY top Laker legend won at least one championship with the team. If he can't bring at least one then he has failed by all Laker standards) Moreover, US economy will more than likely go into a recession within the next 5 years, already 9 years into current bull market, so all collectables will be impacted.

10-20 Year - UP from current market value (His will retired as one of the top 5 to ever play the game even if he doesn't win another title).

Hold on to a handful of the best ones, or your favorites, and sell the rest.

Sure you could possibly get more by holding on to the whole collection in the long term, but maintaining a large collection you no longer enjoy is a chore.

I would hold on to the rookie cards. LeBron's rookie cards (in my opinion) can only go up in value. Win or lose in a Lakers uniform does not really affect his legacy. And his rookie cards will always be the top cards to get.
