View Full Version : A gigantic waste of potential...

Just got the update that Browns rookie WR Antonio Callaway was cited Sunday morning with weed and a suspended license.
This dude is so supremely talented. I watched him play his entire career at Florida and he was a stud. However, putting it nicely, he’s a knucklehead. His head is not on straight whatsoever. Entering 2018, he was right up there with Calvin Ridley as the top WR in the nation and if he had a clean record, he more than likely would’ve been a first round pick.
However, he couldn’t stay outta trouble, but was still drafted by the Browns in the 4th round. Can’t blame the Browns because he is amazingly talented, and I was kinda hoping the Colts would take a flyer on him in the later rounds. I believe he’s so talented, that he could be Antonio Brown Lite, but doubt that’s gonna happen now.
But it looks like Callaway is just gonna become another one of those “what if” receivers. It’s a damn shame. This kid could become a top-10 WR in the league but he just wants to be another NFL knucklehead.
Hopefully he gets his s*** together but judging off his past, that ain’t gonna happen any time soon.
Damn shame.

Can’t say I blame them for taking a shot on him. If they didn’t take him, someone else was going to. I doubt he would’ve made it to the 6th round. If I was a GM and I had the opportunity to use a late 4th on a knucklehead WR that had the skills to be a great WR, I’d take the chance.

Based on the Browns history of drafting and guys like Josh Gordon, you would think they would try another route. They take chances every year and they don't work out.

How much more talent would we get to see on display every Sunday if teams could stipulate in rookie contracts that guys had to live in team barracks until they made it to their second contract?
*Not a serious suggestion. Just a "what if"

Browns team barracks would be a 24/7 party shack. Team could market a reality show and make bank.
The Lions, Bills, and Jets are grateful to the Browns for their iron grip on the mantle of the league's worst-run franchise.

I just don't understand how some of these guys are so dumb. You just got handed a $4m contract, why the hell are you driving your own car around with a suspended license? Take an uber, hire a driver, don't be an idiot and create problems for yourself.
Also, I get that guys don't agree with weed being on the banned list for the NFL but it is and if you want to play you need to follow the rules. I love craft beer but if someone was willing to pay me a million dollars a year and they told me I couldn't drink beer anymore? Easy decision, I'd take it another step further and be sober as a gopher every damn day.

The adage is "You can take the thug out of the ghetto but you can't take the ghetto out of the thug"
The problem with urban youth is they lack judgement skills, wisdom, intelligence and maturity. They usually are emotion based impulsive decision makers, thus the high rate of out of wedlock pregnancies with girls they have no intention of marrying nor children they want to raise. They tend to go with whatever "feels good" be it drugs, sex, and violence (instead of "let's think about it" and "let's talk it through" it's more fisticuffs and gunfire). It's about ego and pride, making it rain at strip clubs, buying multiple cars, having a posse to support, sporting flashy jewelry, etc.
So, it's never quite a surprise when urban youth goes buck wild and fails to live up to their potential. The universities need to stop treating scholarship athletes like slaves for the sport and be responsible educational institutions and have every single athlete leave with a proper education.

Yes, you and I would be able to explain gun parts. Why was did he have a holster and bullets but no gun? That's very odd. Plus if he did have a gun, he needs a CCW permit in Ohio, even for open carry. Theres more to this story, which is the concerning part.

You do not need a CCW for open carry in Ohio. You can open carry in your vehicle without a CCW as long as it's not loaded unless they've recently passed a new bill that I don't know about

Then he won’t play a couple of games. That’s how suspensions work.
So far OP has called him a “dumbass,” “knucklehead,” and “gigantic waste of potential” that is involved in “dumbassery.” All I’m saying is, it’s the 21st century and no one really cares. His punishment from his head coach was literally making him play and he overwhelmingly proved he belongs in the NFL. Meanwhile, OP has stated quite eloquently that the guy’s whole career is essentially over.

Was he found guilty or were any of the other players of the charges above? Players get hit with allegations all the time, it doesn't always make it true.
Far as the recreational stuff, if the NFL offered amnesty and allowed players to come clean the number would be high (no pun intended), but not as high as the NBAs.
The NFL is even partnering up with NFLPA about medicinal and how it can be used to manage pain, so in next few years I feel bad when guys like Josh Gordon are told they can legally do it again.
FYI I am not an advocate of it.

Callaway was drafted in the 4th Round. NFL has specific rules if you have been found guilty of what he was accused of.
NFL Bans Players Convicted of Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence from Combine.
Randy Moss had run-ins with the law, can name a whole list of athletes that did and went on to HOF Careers.
Callaway was given a ticket for the small amount found in his car, zero charges for the gun parts. They just are added in there as they were in the report to make it sizzle in the news. Car was shipped and he didnt check it is what defense he is using. We have seen before athletes get in trouble because of their friends. NFL will have him drug tested a lot, so time will tell, but there was a woman in Virginia who rented a car. She goes to Target, reaches under the seat and there is a bag of drugs there. She calls the police and has it destroyed.

Weed is one thing
Sexual assault that was clearly cleared on bias, credit card fraud, driving with a suspended license, weed and guns are another. Signs of stupid and/or degenerate behavior.
Gordon's smoking weed were pretty far down the list of his poor decisions.

Ok, but "fine" as a person, and "fine" because he was never kicked out of the league are two VERY different categorizations.

Your perceived bias and can show you CEOs and Politicians that have been successful in life that have been in trouble with law at young age and are now fine.
He was not driving with guns, there was a gun part and some ammo found, which he was not charged with as it was not a crime in Ohio or 90% of the US

Perceived bias? It's not a one time thing.
Being able to get away with something because of who you are, your position, or your athletic skill isn't exactly a good thing. Would you agree?

Then please show me where the Florida Legislature has impeached the judge or the FBI has launched a probe into undo influence? Until then perceived bias.
Will not agree, there was a student around here caught stealing. Student was a top student at a Top Academic School. The kid did not have rich parents or an athletic background, but he was a well known accomplished internationally recognized student. Commonwealth Attorney didnt even prosecute because the kid didnt deserve it and had committed a one time crime.
This kid was not convicted, a civil suit was not filed, now someone like Peyton Manning is in court records having paid off people that sued him after he sexually assaulted and harassed them. So there are steps that could have been taken and they weren't.

Is there any time more prevalent than now that shows what can happen to a sexual assault case against someone that stands to make their school money?
If you want to believe that because something is ruled one way, then that's what happened, no if's and or butts about it, I am sure you would agree that OJ undoubtedly did nothing. I mean, he was cleared, right?

Victim told someone who told University judicial and the ball got rolling. The case was never referred to the University of Florida Police or Gainesville Police Departments and the victim and her witnesses had no problem giving statements to UF Judicial, but when contacted by the Law Enforcement and State Attorney refused to work with them. Her own text messages shown in public (but not to public) in hearing have her admitting she was faking being drunk, have her admitting how stoned he was (which she did to investigators as well) She went to the ER and a kit was done, no injuries were found to have happened. The Judge did not even accept the text messages into evidence from Callaway where she kept texting, flirting, and sending him pictures for an extended time afterwards. In addition, the victim and witnesses boycotted the hearing after they were reminded they had to sign more documents under penalty of Federal Law before the hearing (it was a Title IX hearing) and they said they were boycotting because of the judge. Previous documents would have violated UF honor code.
Victims get scared and do not want to come forward especially against athletes, I respect that, but she had a friend out her. She then gave statements saying what happened, when she was contact by proper law enforcement, she refused to cooperate and refused to sign documents for UF before the hearing under perjury of law. She has also not served him with a civil case, which many people do if they are so sure.
I am an alumni of UVA, Google "Rolling Stone" and "UVA" and there is an example of false accusations (which pisses me off to this day).

Looking at the evidence and what is out there as I did in Callaway case, OJ in my opinion did it, but a jury said he did not, so that is how thing go. He had a fine NFL Career beforehand.
Look at who the Broncos signed today a 3 time All-SEC Linebacker who was accused of assault and found not guilty and the evidence was pretty solid in his favor from what I have read, but took 3 years. On flip side can pull up a large number of athletes including football and basketball kicked out for sexual assault in recent years because more schools are being held accountable.

I agree that these things do happen. If this was Calloway's only blemish, and if there wasn't any bias by the ruler (whether you think he did anything or not, you gotta admit there is a clear conflict of interest here), the picture would look different. Calloway, like him, don't like him, whatever, has shown little to nothing to demonstrate that he makes good decisions.

I've never said he's done for for life, or even in the NFL. But his poor decision making is definitely there. Can he outgrow it and do better? Sure.
Agree or disagree, I just can't get past the ruling judge. For UF to hire a UF guy to make a ruling on a UF guy is what it is.
I'm unfamiliar with the UVA case you mentioned. Maybe I will check it out tomorrow. Pretty late here. I am familiar with the Duke Lax case, though. All it took was one biased DA to spin things a way that benefitted him. It's not exactly farfetched to believe this judge was hired to make one ruling, and one ruling only. I believe evidence was withheld there too (Duke case), but I could be mistaken.

The UVA Case in some ways beat the Duke Case out of the water. No charges, but Professors protested and watched as students threw bricks at the house. Greek life was shut down, University President spoke out against and didnt retract (thankfully she is gone now). Journalists didnt get the story right or fact check. Dean sues in Federal Court. Dawsons Creek references with a fake BF. It was a mess and too many were duped, but the story sounded too crazy in the beginning when I read it (when you read it you will see why on parts) and I urged caution, but I was willing to see it play out.
Again the totality of all the evidence being looked at (hers and his) including, the ER kit and the report from the ER staff, all add up to any judge being able to take the facts and dismiss the case.

With the Duke case, what's crazy is when it came out it was all over the news. I don't remember hearing much after that. Honestly, I don't even remember hearing that they were innocent until the ESPN 30 for 30 a few year back.
But the issue with Calloway is that it wasn't any judge. That it was a UF guy leaves the door wide open that what was told about the case wasn't exactly what happened.

I understand your viewpoint based on the evidence that was presented, but I think we can agree to disagree on what kind of impact the judge's conflict of interest had, or didn't have.
At the end of the day, all we can judge something on is what we're told, if we weren't actually there to view it for ourselves. Hell, we might even get it wrong then! I'd say more times than not stuff like this is called accurately, but for sure it's not always.

How many NFL players would you say smoke weed? I'd venture to say it's fairly high. Would you agree? 25% maybe?
How many of those guys get caught? The problem is being stupid enough to get caught. For Calloway, twice before he's even played a regular season down.
The guy failed a drug test at the combine. He was supposed to be living with his agent, in part to help him stay out of trouble. So what happens? They split, and he gets a new agent.
Then he gets caught again! This time at 3 AM for failing to yield in traffic. What's the old rule? Only break 1 law at a time. And with a suspended license and gun parts.

He is a dumbass. He doesn’t know how to make good decisions. I don’t understand how you can’t look at his track record and think, “wow this kid is a dumbass”.
Look at players like Larry Fitzgerald — never got in trouble at Pitt. Been in the NFL for 14 years and I have yet to hear anything negative about him. Hasn’t been involved in domestic violence, drugs, anything of that nature. He’s a model citizen. He doesn’t surround himself with dummies, nor does he make bad decisions that could jeopardize his career and HOF resumé.
Antonio Callaway, on the other hand, is the complete opposite. He surrounds himself with dummies and just does dumb things and apparently, doesn’t care if he plays in the NFL or not because of those decisions.
Therefore, I consider him a dumbass. I’m just calling a spade a spade. I guarantee you that, if most people looked at his track record, the overwhelming statement would be “wow, he’s a dumbass”. If you wanna consider him a model citizen and an upstanding gentleman like someone of Larry Fitzgerald’s caliber, then go for it.

Willies, Strong, and Sheehy (had to throw him in there)
In reality Njoku or Higgins is really the 4th guy. We know Njoku isn't out there to block.
Callaway has been running with the 2nd team for the entirety of camp (if this is the reason I have no idea?) but they certainly haven't been counting on him for anything with the emergence of Higgins...
They are very high on Willies as well... but I'm not ready to pencil him in as an every game NFL player yet.

Now look in the mirror, and say that those guys are even remotely the same in character and career mistakes. Keep a straight face while doing it. Might as well put Dorial Green-Beckham in there as well. A better comparison.
Callaway was absolutely clueless out there. Off the field, he does not get it. That has been his reputation for years. Apparently, he doesn't get it on the field, either.

Larry Fitzgerald has lined up in wrong spot before and he has worse character issues.
Off the field he failed a test for something that hundreds of NFL players admit they did weekly (admit when retired) and the league is studying allowing. Not going to call him an idiot for that. Hard for me to take that policy seriously anymore, even though I am anti-pot in every aspect.
Was not wrong about him. He still has talent and made a mistake. Not sure where this again comes from, but tally one on your board since you need that validation to make your day go by.

Then prove it or shut up about it. You don't like me, go ahead and show what PBM I am. This is my first and only account, so go ahead and waste your time. There are alot of people with alot to say here. I didn't link my ebay because it wasn't necessary and I don't typically buy and sell much online. I tend to keep a fairly low key online presence, period. If I do a deal with someone they will know who I am, if not it's really not necessary for anyone. It's called a self-fulfilling prophecy. You keep saying it until I respond and then say the response says I'm a PBM.
Go ahead, dig and prove the impossible. Or just give it up and admit it's just a poor attempt at a personal attack.
Or do what I said and carry this on via PM, I'd be more than happy to supply any information you are dying to know.
