Curious on everyone's opinion here. We all know how frequently ebay has been doling out coupons and discounts recently. It's my thought that this is to inflate sales numbers to look better when it comes time to sell say maybe by January 2019? It all adds up to me. Not only the discounts, but what about the recent auctions ending with a good 2-3 seconds in between the "end time" and the actual auction end. We all know this is to pump up sales and sneak in those last few snake bids that would otherwise be refused in the past. Just my opinion, but look out for a possible sale of eBay. The signs are a pointing that way!!!

They have been doing the coupon thing for a couple of years now. Its almost to a point you can predict what is coming. Only difference it it has become more open to everyone used to be most offers were by invite only.

With all the change they are about to start making I think its more of trying to regain market share as they streamline the site. The new payment system is going to be a big key to whatever they have planned in the future, but don't think they would be doing that if they were planning on selling, unless it is them selling to Ayden.

They are using the coupons to bolster their numbers and encourage people to buy

How are they making money with 15-20% off coupons?

How are they making money with 15-20% off coupons?Didn't you pretty much answer your own question? They are looking to bolster their REVENUE by running sales, not profit.

It's a mystery how they turn a profit to me as well when you give it all away with discounts. But those don't last forever and people are still buying things when they aren't on sale. Just look around BO with guys complaining "I bought $500 worth of stuff yesterday and now there is a coupon?"

It in turns drives traffic to the site. I'll buy cards even when they aren't on sale if they are rare enough and in the condition I want. Also I buy up lots because I'm worried they will disappear when they are a good deal. Some things you just can't wait around for 2-3 times a month to act on.

I doubt a large percentage of the coupons ever actually get used.

Traffic gets driven to the site, ads get clicked creating revenue, promoted items get bought creating even more revenue. The money generated for ebay is not on the face, it's on the backend.

Pretty sure they aren't selling, (although I have heard of some $BABA rumors, but those have been around since $BABA went public) if you are looking from an investment standpoint, these sales so close to each other could signify that they hit quarterly (or monthly) goals -OR- the exact opposite, they are losing users and trying to retain them.

By the numbers they are still the number 2 online marketplace but their share has been slipping so they are looking at that.

They are also rolling out a new bill me later type system as well as their own version of paypal working capital. These 2 should create large back end revenue streams as well.
