View Full Version : Another countdown - 10 cards from the last month - THANK YOU karlsta26

Clearly I've been doing something right....

Or maybe we just have several people around these parts doing ridiculously kind things because they're really neat humans.

Maybe both things are true.

Whatever the reason, a big thank you for karlsta26 for randomly deciding to send me the below Rudy Gobert 27/199 auto to the place where all 27/xx Rudy Goberts should reside.....

My forever binder.

My forever binder is small. It's got maybe 150 cards in it. Cards that range in value from under a dollar to, oh - I don't know - maybe $50. There are cards in there that I've had since before some of you were born. Sorry to go old-man on you there.... but it's true. I have Karl Malone inserts in there that I've owned since the late 90's......

The NBA's greatest 50 as ranked by the sporting news 2000 Legends cards

The Karl Malone silver embossed 1997 refractor that Gslayton gave to me for hooking him up with a Rodman PMG he had been looking for forever.

The remnants of my once great AK-47, CJ Miles, and Ronnie Brewer collections.

The Rare tobacco cards that are worth diddly squat that a random lady in England gave me while I was on my mission there when I told her that I collect cards.

Now.... this card.

Thank you, my friend. Just a ridiculous show of kindness. Now, let's find you that MJ!

Now, ten cards from the last few months. I know, right? I'm a dork. I spend too much time here. I'm annoying.

I get it. But I love it. So whatever. Ten cards from the last 4-6 weeks. One a day. Starting now.

#10 - Kobe Bryant - 2007-08 Topps Finest Magenta Printing Plate 1/1

Okay, let's get something out of the way right away with this one- Printing plates are not cool.

There, i said it.

They were cool in the late 90's. They were the next coolest thing to 1/1's. They didn't come out in every product. They really were cool. Seriously. I pulled a 1997 Greg Ostertag plate at my LCS and people actually thought I had done something good..... No, really..... I'm not joking.

Then the companies all simultaneously realized something they should have considered years before... if they've got value, let's put them all in packs!

15-20 years later and Printing plates are almost as bad as those little while pieces of carboard they put in packs to stop people form searching.

Even still, some plates still have appeal. Specifically, early plates (from the 90's) and plates that have been crafted into a card with cardboard edges and borders and backs.

Plates are still cool for iconic cards. Really cool, in fact.

Plates of backs of cards are nearly never cool. Sorry. Only when they're of the backs of iconic cards, and even still.... I'd say those still kinda suck.

When a plate is wrapped in cardboard and actually stamped with a 1/1 it takes on the life of a card, again. It becomes meaningful. Add the stats, etc, that are on the back of the card as created by that plate and all of a sudden you have something fun - but that is SO different from a piece of metal with a white label stuck to the back of it (notwithstanding this sentence I really need the Derrick Rose Eminence base plate, so please, for the love of all that is good, someone let me give you $100 for that, k?).

Last and perhaps most important point - you want a fun - albeit lengthy and agonizing - chase? Not even an incredibly expensive chase??

Collect all of the plates for a given card. I'm serious! It's an awesome project. If you start when a product is first released, you have a fighting chance. If you start years after a product comes out, you'll really have an uphill battle, but you can still totally do it. Just be prepared to be patient and keep your eyes open.

I know. I'm obsessive as all get out. But I like writing about cards. So here we are.

Here's the forever binder....

First section - 2000 Legends - 50 legends cards - only missing #6 Magic Johnson because it was never produced. :)

Then a section of 8x10's and other random over sized comemrative things. There's a certificate thing that the Jazz gave out when Malone becaome the all-time leading scorer. A Stockton Assist and Steals leader thing.

Then just a bunch of random cards with random stories. Mostly jazz. There's an Andrea Bargnani SP Sig rookie that I thought might be worth something someday. A hammered 1933 Goudy of one of the basketball players. Ed Watcher? Idk. I think I have 3 Andrei Kirilenko Fleer Exclusive Rookies - rarest true rookie. An AK rookie credentials too, actually. That's proabably the best card. This Gobert. That Malone Grant gave me.

Good another list :)

I agree that plates seem to have lost their appeal for the most part, but I do want to refute your statement about plate backs (for one product at least). I LOVED that Topps Total inserted 8 plates per player. A cheap product with rare chase cards and an added incentive for the player collectors? Count me in.

I, for one, was very happy to pull a Robert Traylor back plate a week or two ago lol

I’m all in on everything that Topps Test is. Everything.

Panini should just go all in and call complete “panini total” and just copy the whole thing. I want like a 1,000 card base set. I want mascots. Owners. Assistant coaches. I want all 8 printing plates.

Can we also throw some “collectors choice” in and add some interactive redemption cards.

Oh, and I want a 1:12,000 pack 20 card insert set.

That’s all.

#9 - Wilt Chamberlain 1972 Icee Bear PSA 8
From Beckett’s website -

The 1972-73 Icee Bear set contains 20 player cards each measuring approximately 3" by 5". The cards are printed on thin stock. The fronts feature color facial pictures, and the backs show brief biographical information. The set may have been printed in 1973-74 or perhaps later as they were available in the Seattle area as late as summer 1974. The cards were reportedly distributed one card with each Icee Bear Slurpee purchased. There are four cards that are more difficult to find than the other 16; these four are listed as SP's in the checklist below.

3x5 is a big big card. Which, as usual, hurts the collectibility if the card. But it also makes it an interesting piece. When I polled a group of good people that I work with many guessed that this one as the most valuable of the ten cards on this list.

Which brings me to my next pro-tip. Listen well. During the National, items up for open auction via eBay often sell for a song. Many of the big bidders aren’t doing their daily searches, bids, or snipes. Thus, this card - which typically sells for around $80-$120, went for $54. Just such a ridiculous deal. A little over $50 for a near mint - mint original odd-ball wilt chamberlain?

Boom.

I think Panini tried or at least wanted to do something along this line with Panini Complete. But no one bought it (besides me - i loved it). I think they were really close they just needed one really "deep" chase. The autos were hard 1 per case. The gold were hard but obtainable - 1 per box. The set was fairly deep 400 cards. A near miss in my opinion and gave up on it.

Yeah the cards are basically paper, the Gold needed to be more of a chrome finish like a Gold Signature or Platinum from Collectors Choice back in the day. Plus the autos have to be slightly more frequent like 1:3-5 boxes or put a jersey/patch card in each box, just something so it isn't a "complete" dud.

Yep. Panini Complete was what I was referring to. And I do like the product. I don’t even mind the super thin card stock - though obviously I’d prefer thicker stock... I can appreciate that Beyer cutting every corner possible to save on a .99 pack. I opened a box with my boy a few years ago one pack a day. Totally fun. I want an even bigger base set and a few more really tough parallels and inserts but other that’s that, it was stellar. Well, I also want some real insert sets that are like 25 card sets and 1:12 packs.

I love this card. Been eyeing it for a couple years now. It's on my "need'it" list.

Darn affordable especially if you’re okay going with graded but not psa. A bgs 8 sold for $35 not that long ago. That’s a super deal.

I agree! A no brainer for sure. Not one of his most popular cards but he has so few playing days cards, I kinda feel like getting a nice copy of wax is a no brainer. Would love to add an auto though. I’ll fknd one. Price has to be right. Auto has to be blue.

This is what I want-
1:pack - silver parallel
1:box - gold parallel
1: 6 boxes - black parallel
1:12 boxes - gold chrome parallel
1/1 - black chrome parallel

You tell me there is a potential $20k hit out of a $1 pack and you’ve bought equity with me. They could/should absolutely do this. A $40 box that you could build sets of, find some random inserts, and potentially hit something big - with action shots? I’d buy it. I’d build a set. I’d do it with my kid. He’d buy more later on. The hobby would grow. I’ll stop, now.

#8 - Vince Carter - Andre Iguodala 2006-07 Reflextuons Mirror Images dual patch auto /10

No description provided via the Beckett website, so let me give a little color.

1. Might be the only sticker auto in my collection. Pretty sure it is.
2. Cards are super thick. Like eminence thick. Don’t throw it at somebody... they might die.
3. Super reflective and refractee <- made up a word. ;)
4. Cool because it’s a dual patch auto that’s impossible to find now. Yay for tough chases.
5. Also fun to chase is the dual jersey /100 or dual patch /50. Not as difficult, but for some players still not easy. Not expensive. Good combo.
6. Can’t find a checklist, but there probably aren’t many combos who are still active. Cool to see Iggy and Vince still doing their thing all these years later.

Unbelievably cool card, thanks for sharing. I agree with all of what you said, but another thing I love about this card is how well/subtly the stickers flow with the card. They don't stick out like a sore thumb as on many other sticker autos. Within the class of sticker autos, I really think there should be a distinction between those that integrate the sticker into the design in an aesthetically pleasing way and those for which the sticker is intrusive and detracts from the design more than necessary.

To me, this is an example of the former.

#7 - John Stockton 2008-09 UD Black Gold auto patch /5

Time to step this list up a little bit. Everything from here on out is now on my active top 100. Cards 8-10 were for other projects. 1-7 are for the list.

Thanks to a very good friend for first notifying me about this card. Then, it turned out that it was also on BO. The seller and I couldn’t come to a price, but I was fortunate enough to win it on ebay for what I thought was a good price.

It was important to me to add a couple of really nice Stockton and Malone’s to the list. This is a nice one and will be in the 80’s on the list.

As always, I’m a sucker for the etched holofoil.

And add to it that it’s an on-patch auto that actually approximates John’s normal autograph. I’m in love.

#6 - Lamar Odom 2004-05 Exquisite Limited Logos

I probably overpaid on this one but didn't want to miss it.

This is the third 2004-05 Exquisite Limited Logos to make the top 100 joining both Kobe (#3) and Yao (#23). Lamar is lower on the list. :)

The quality of the patch and the uber-blue autograph combined with what I believe is the best design of all autograph patches can even pull Lamar to the top 100.

My honest opinion about Lamar Odom is that he's on the short list of greatest underachievers in NBA history. I am well aware of his resume of accomplishments, but his skill level combined with his size should have resulted in a top 50 player in NBA history, and instead he became a great role player. You can argue whether Kobe wins those last couple of championships without him, but to me you cannot argue about his talent. One of the greatest underachievers of all time.

Nice clips jersey. You think he underachieved? I dunno tough to say. Long career, championships maybe an all-star game or two, don't underestimate all of that and how good could he have been. Did he have that great of a shot? Basketball IQ? I had to look at this when reminiscing about my TJ Ford collection and question his underachievement when you have guys like Kwame Brown, Andrei Barngani and Anthony Bennett all drafted #1. At least he did something!

Nice card and gl getting more of these!

LOL at the 1/1 pens. Some of the autos in bold are really nice but would love to see what some of those cards would look like with a skinny pen. Would like to get more of your opinion on this :) Cheers!

Re-Odom - Yeah, I just think he had all-time talent. I think he should have been GREAT. He's a million dollar talent, ten cent brain guy to me.

But he would show flashes of absolute brilliance that made you wonder why he couldn't be more Magic/Lebron and less role player.

But I am absolutely with you that he despite not living up to his talent - he did have a very successful career. I don't think the Lakers beat the Jazz in several of those championship runs without Odom, for example. He was THAT important. His length and size at his position as well as his ability to move from 3 to 4 was really special. He fulfilled a great roll - just not what he could have been.

You caught me. :)

As soon as I did the Stockton, i regretted putting the Odom over it. But I think there's a case that any card 3-7 on this list could be put above any of the others. In any case, I agree - the Stockton should have been over the Odom.

#5 - Chris Bosh 2003-04 E-x Essential Crednetials Future #/11

Of all the under-appreciated HOFers of this generation, perhaps none are as undervalued as Chris Bosh. Bosh is THE EXAMPLE of a guy who sacrificed individual stats for team success. Without his two rebounds at the end of game 6, Miami doesn't win that game or that championship. But it wasn't just the rebounding, it was the defense, the three point shooting, the passing. He sacrificed being the #1 guy on probably 25 teams to being a roll player on a historic team. He dealt with all of the crap that came along with that roll, and played it perfectly.

Bosh has several popular rookie options. From Exquisite to Ultimate to Chrome to everything else - but this Credentials fit the bill for me and in many ways personifies how I collect. An impossible to find card that is traded so infrequently that determining value is extremely difficult.

While Exquisite and Chrome have seen incredible increases in value, cards such as this one lack sales data to be able to easily identify value - but while Exquisite represents the best UD had to offer in 2003, and Chrome is the peoples choice for Topps, the question of which 2003 Fleer product is less simple. I chose E-X.

With features that mirror the iconic 1997-98 E-X 2001, the 2003-04 E-X credentials sets reminds us of the goodness the 90's offered in a sea of other great options available to 2003.

Last thing - And this can't be understated - The Fleer bankruptcy resulted in cards and uncut sheets being later serial numbered and sold as entirely original. Finding cards - like this one - that were graded before the bankruptcy is uncommon, but a very cool guarantee that the card in question came to us the way all good modern cards ought to - via a pack and not a bankruptcy.

Its in the 70s-80s somewhere. But like a lot of cards you could argue way higher. If bosh was collected in a way commensurate with his career accomplishments, it would definitely be a lot higher.

You had to 1-up my Ford didnt you

Lol. I assure you that I bought it before you posted yours. But I’d still love to know if I could pull one of those from you. :)

Ha! I know the feeling. There are 2-3 cards that I've been looking to add for a while. :) But being patient sometimes makes the chase more fun.

#4 - Wilt Chamberlain 1972-72 Topps #1 PSA 9

I've told the story several times that when I turned 9 years old, my parents bought me a Karl Malone rookie card for my birthday that easily represented the most memorable birthday present of my youth. For them, they knew that card was my #1 card. When the time came to purchase it they called all the shops in the valley, and only one had a Malone rookie - which they were selling for full book value of $60. But before they had found it they had located a 1972 Wilt #1 which they were going to buy had they not found the Malone. They knew I was mesmerized by the story of Wilt's career acheivements. Vintage basketball will always be my first cardboard love - and no years represent that better than 69-72.

The 1972 Topps set, along with 1971 represent the beginning of normal sized Topps cards. Before 1971, Topps used the famous "Tall Boys Dimensions" - then, excluding the jumbo 1976-77's, every year from 71-81 used the normal dimensions. But the colors on 71 and 72 are easily my favorite.

While I'd like to land one of the 5 existing PSA 10's, I don't know how likely it is that I'd ever afford one or even get a chance. Meanwhile, with less than 100 PSA 9's in existence, this one, in this condition fits the bill for me in terms of rarity and sentiment. A gorgeous front, back, all the important stats and great eye appeal to boot.

Super sharp wilt! The corners and centering look perfect! Vintage always brings me back to my memories of when I first started collecting in the 80’s.

1. Yeah.... there aren't a ton. But even the ones that do exist are absolute bargains for the most part. There is nothing wrong with a PSA 4-5. Truly, there isn't. Most of his cards in that condition are very affordable.

2. Yeah, you should add one. Any year is great... though 74 has him in with a Conquistadors logo. For those ABA fans who understand that story, that's really really cool, but for most others, anything 69-73 has him in a Laker uni and they all work.

Great card. I have a low condition one too. I love that set. One of the most Iconic designs.

Nothing wrong with that. Agreed on the design.

That Wilt is so nice. Great pickup!

#3 - John Stockton 1997-98 Finest Embossed Gold Refractor /74

Rare 90's Stocktons are incredibly difficult to find - more so than you might think. Not only are high end Jazz fans extremely passionate, but he has a very strong following in Asia. Believe it or not, this card has only sold publicly twice in the past 15 years. Last in 2013 for $355.

People have forgotten how great Stock was. Let me put this into perspective for you for a sec.

I saw this tweet yesterday that illustrates this....

Steve Nash's first MVP season: 15.5 PPG (50-44-89 splits), 11.5 APG, 1.0 SPG

John Stockton from 1987-1997 (816 gms, missed four games over 10 seasons): 15.6 PPG (52-39-83 splits), 12.8 APG, 2.56 SPG

In an era of incredible inefficiency, Stock put up efficiency splits that look like a star guard from 2018 while leading the league in assists every year for what seemed like my entire childhood.

We were so lucky to have him here in Utah. He just never missed games. His Assist record is unbreakable. According to Gary Payton, the most difficult guy to guard wasn't MJ.... it was Stockton. six foot one of pure toughness, grit and basketball brilliance.

When Grant (GSlayton) reached out, he told me it was time to pay me back for finding him the Rodman 97-98 Championship PMG.... thanks for giving me a chance brother. Such an awesome card. Glad to put it in it's spot near the top of my Jazz collection, and in the 40's-50's on the list. The top 100 now has 3 Stockton's - this, the 03-04 Exquisite Limited Logo and the UD black mentioned earlier here.

this could not be more true!

I've had this chat with numerous people before.

Let's use Chris Paul as an example here. We all recognize that he is one of the premier PG's of the last 15 years... Well he is currently on 8708 career assists. Stockton's record is 15806!!!
Chris Paul is currently 33 years old (and I think we can all agree his assist average is slowly regressing). He would need to play ever game of the regular season for the next 8-9 years and average his career average of almost spot on 10apg to threaten Stocktons record.

a player would need to enter the league and average 10apg for their entire career and play in the league for 20years and play every game to beat him! CP3 has only averaged more than 10 over a season 6 times in his 13 year career so far....that's how tough it is to accomplish!

Like you said...arguably the one career record in the NBA that will never be surpassed!

I'm just now catching up, but the coloring on that Wilt is really good. My 72 is pretty faded (I posted it on IG not long ago but the filer made it look much bolder).

People just skirt past it and rationalize it one way or another. Bill Simmons talks about how Stockton played in an era where it was "just easier to get assists"... but if that's the case, why didn't anyone else in that era average anything close to Stock? They didn't for a lot of reasons.

1.The Jazz's system.
2. One of the greatest scorers of all time being on the team.
3. John Stockton was freaking brilliant.

But you're right.... Chris Paul is the perfect example of why the record is totally unbreakable. CP is was the most likely guy from the 2000's to break the record, and he's going to maybe get 75% of the way there. That's just ridiculous. Especially with the way the game is played today, it's just never going to be even close.

I'm just now catching up, but the coloring on that Wilt is really good. My 72 is pretty faded (I posted it on IG not long ago but the filer made it look much bolder).

Thanks man. Now I just need to find a 71 as nice! :)

#2 Kobe Bryant 2014 Noir Logoman Tag Auto /3

Some of you already saw this in person at the National. I picked it up from my office and then headed to the airport. I was pretty hyped to get it. It's actually not easy to find any tag/patch auto of Kobe this nice.... and I LOVE how undervalued Noir is. When all is said and done, all that matters is how nice the card is - not just what product it came out of. I'd hate to think of what this would have cost had it come out of Flawless. Noir is fine with me and being from the first year of the product is a huge plus. :)!

Shameless post - I'll reveal #1 on IG.... I'm pretty pro now. I even used a hashtag the other day. Do I know how/when to use a hashtag? Nope. Do I know how to use instagram? Not really. But I'm 4 posts in, including two cards.... so yeah - the four people who see this post should totally follow me.

You're all wonderful.

Nothing wrong with Noir.

Man the pick and roll of Stockton to Malone is just a thing of beauty.

It only works well if you have all the weapons at your disposal, their execution was amazing. Then it was backed up by defense.
