View Full Version : Top 5 90's box to collect
I am addicted to collecting sealed 1990's and early 2000's boxes. What is everyone's top 5 boxes in that era?

I'm curious to hear everyone's thoughts here. I've recently started buying late 90's/early 00's wax boxes. Here are a few recent pickups:

Concerning the 97 Skybox Zforce- Series 2 is the better series box. But still a nice box. They are drying up. Concerning the Skybox Premium box- Series 1 is the better series.

OP, thanks for starting this thread. I like collecting unopened and have some 90's boxes but missed out on the 90's as it happened so I am playing catch up in learning what inserts come out of what boxes. What makes the Series 2 better for the 97 Z Force and the Series 1 for the Skybox Premium? Thanks.

With Z-Force the super raves and rookies are only in series 2. For Skybox Premium I think it's the opposite, rookies in series 1. Star Rubies are in both series iirc. And a question to someone else, both series from the inaugural star rubies year use the same amoeba pattern, right?
And for some reason Blowout still has a box of 96-97 Skybox Premium listed at $600, they def confused it with 97-98.

They know what they have. That box still sells for $300-400. Most of their 90s boxes are just a bit overpriced.

I know I bought a lot of overpriced 90s stuff from BO when I got back in the game. I don't think they mind sitting on it. Which makes sense financially on their end.

What I've noticed is that they start out with boxes priced very reasonably. Then as they begin to move inventory they raise their prices gradually. Good business sense to raise prices if demand is strong, can't blame them.

The further you get from release with these higher valued unopened boxes the more the value proposition changes. The values of the boxes become less about what the contents might actually contain if you rip them as fewer and fewer of them are actually being bought for the purpose of opening. It gets to the point where the sealed box itself is the collectable prize over whatever may actually lie within the packs.

Well said.
Here's where I stand: I'm probably one of the largest vintage collector of unopened boxes in the world. There may be just a couple above me from what I have gathered over the last 6-7 years.
A few Reasons I collect:
1. Becoming more rarer as time goes on
2. Lets me bring back my childhood memories
3. Unopened boxes are producing more value than any other investment I have currently.
4. The thrill of the chase. It's the mystery of what might be inside.
5. I don't bust boxes, but if I did and found that special card...

When I was seven during xmas 97-98 what I really wanted was a box of Metal Universe and my mom actually got me one! The inserts sucked, I think I got a Marcus Camby Planet Metal and Silver slams of Terrell Brandon and Kerry Kittles and no PMGs but I did manage a complete base set which I've had in pages in a folder ever since. Cannot believe what these boxes are going for now! There was no way I wasn't busting that box though.

Ahhh no biggie! This was one of the best looking sets ever made IMO and busting that box with my mom helping me bust a pack or two was something I’ll cherish forever. TBH though.... at the time I had seen a couple PMGs at mall shows and thought they looked sooooo ugly in comparison to the base cards.

Agree with most of the posts above
I also believe Panini is responsible to this “rising price” of 90s boxes
Take Noir 17:18 for example
The best possible cards are Barkley spotlight sig
Which is about $1k (and possibly dropping in the future) while a case is $2k

Great thread here. It certainly is exciting to see so many unsealed boxes from the 1990s. Quick question for those of you who buy 1990s boxes:
How afraid are you that the cards inside are sticking to each other?
I've opened several boxes from the 1990s (usually baseball cards), and I'd say about half of the time, the gloss on the cards created so much sticking, that most of the cards were not salvageable. These experiences really turned me off from buying 1990s boxes. I only go after rare singles now.
Even if you store your boxes in perfect conditions (to reduce humidity, etc.), there is no way to know how the previous owner stored his/her cards. I like to open 1990s products. But even if I liked to collect full unopened boxes, just knowing that the cards inside may all come out in giant bricks all stuck together would probably cause me to reconsider.
So unless I obtained a 1990s box at release time and then stored it in perfect conditions for the last 20 years or so, I don't think I would feel comfortable with an unsealed box. Certainly not at the prices many boxes are going for these days.
Thoughts?

Is there a retail version? This went cheap if you're talking like that. Just a uneducated seller on the product? Honestly, i'm not familiar with the wax. I'm very familiar with the inserts.

Thats hobby. When sellers dont know what they have or list incorrectly you can find steals. Hence why that box is bought up immediately. If that went on auction you'd see the real value.

The Championship preview box is no slouch. You can still get the PMG's in that box. However, Series 1 is the better series as far as value. I collect both. I do stay away from just about all retail box versions in skybox. Hobby only.

Might want to do a little more research there fellow: I never stated there was a series 2 box. There is a series 1 and a championship preview series.

If there wasn't a series two, is there really a series one? I don't care what the box says. It's known as Metal Universe the other is Championship.

Found these and immediately picked them up in a flea market today. Is there much demand for these?

These are nice. 2 years ago 50-60 now 120+.
The hoopstars has Jordan and autographics are always coveted.
Series 1 though not as good as series 2 which has 911 and high voltage inserts

This is 97-98 Ultra Series 1 which is superior to the series 2.
You get first ever SP RC's. 1:4 packs. Duncan McGrady etc...
Platinum Medallion /100 MJ, Kobe, Duncan etc...
First ever Masterpiece 1/1
Ultra Stars Gold MJ = $10K+ card
Ultrabilities Superstar MJ, Kobe etc...
I listed this box on ebay and more than 1 person got mad I wouldn't sell the box for $200 citing Series 2 completed sales.

Always have collected the fleer ultra boxes. One of my favorites. And you are correct concerning the series. However, I collect both series.
Plus, I still believe there are some 1/1 masterpieces yet to be discovered.

Anybody have an answer to this?
Thoughts?
Anybody have an answer to this?
I will answer:
Does not phase me one bit. It's a chance that I am willing to take. They are not making anymore 1990's and early 2000's boxes anymore.
I've opened quite a few 90's boxes in the past and never did experience the cards sticking together.
It's sorda like buying a used car. Are you 100% there isn't internal engine or transmission concerns after the initial test drive? We all take chances and risks everyday. All the way from purchasing existing businesses, buying used cars, buying a home, and buying 90's sports card boxes.
I wonder if they were planning a series 2 at some point. If they had made a series 2, what would everyone liked to have seen in it?
You would think they were huh? And if they had, I would have liked to seen like orange numbered to 150 or maybe some other colored PMG's. However, keeping the greens and the reds the ultimate and more valued.

I have a lot of experience with busting product over the past 21 months. The worst sticking products for me have been fleer brilliants. 98-99 thunder and 98-99/99-00 Ultra commonly have sticking issues. I've had 98-99 fleer tradition stuck like a brick and some boxes not sticking at all. Topps Chrome sticks, but typically easy to clean surfaces with lens cleaner and microfiber cloth. 97-98 Finest and chrome you have to worry about hulking of the cards even straight from the packs. All of that being said, I think storage is a huge factor in amount of sticking with most products.
