Im curious to know what your biggest steal or find you have ever had? for example im a football collecctor and i picked up a box of cards for $200 had a bunch of Peyton Manning finest rookies and other random stuff but i found a shiny basketball card of Michael Jordan 97-98 precious metal gems red /100
it was not in the greatest condition i figured it was about $100 card so i instantly traded it for a bgs 9.5 brady from impact, and bgs 9.5 brady rookie paramount. I didnt realize my mistake til afterwards. would love to hear what your biggest find or steal has been

For me, it was garage sale find - $20 for 3 shoe boxes full of near mint 1972-1976 football and baseball cards. Still have most of them.

Mine would be an album with about 400 cards in it all from the late 1950's to the late 1970's. All were stars and super stars but they were in pretty much average condition. Biggest card was probably an OJ Simpson rookie card but tons of HOF'ers. It was at a flea market and I asked the lady what she wanted for it and she said $25. Handed her the money and she was so excited because it was her first sale of the day.

I traded a Paul Molitor rookie card worth $28 at the time for a 400 count box of basketball cards. I really wasn't sure about the trade and thought about it for about 20 minutes. All 86-88 Fleer with Jordan rookie, Jordan rookie sticker, 2nd years and all kinds of 86 Fleer stars (this was around early 90s). Forgot all about that box until a couple years ago. Still haven't graded them.
edit. Forgot Football section. I was looking at all the prices I bought my Brady rookies for so I'll go with those. Over 140 rookies and only paid over $200 for a couple.

yep this past june. i dont have a scan of it. i traded it within minutes of picking up the lot. my guess it would have graded a 7 it had some chipping. I assumed it was worth around $100. thats the last time i make assumptions on values without any research

2-3 years ago before the massive Brady boom I was up early on a Sunday morning scrolling ebay and saw a seller had just listed a bunch of Brady rookie stuff including a 2000 Leaf Limited Limited Edition Brady RC /50 (I believe BGS 9) for a BIN of $500. I did a little research and noticed that a raw one had recently sold for over $900 via PWCC. I quickly jumped on my online banking and did a transfer from my savings to checking account and hit the BIN and paid immediately via Paypal. Afterwards, I can't remember when it happened, either that day or a few days later, I received a message via eBay from some random jerk telling me what a steal I had gotten and that they had messaged the seller telling them they left money on the table (and probably offering them more as well), but luckily for me, the seller honored the sale and I got the card.

Ended up flipping it a few weeks later for around $1,100, which was the highest price one had ever sold for at the time, so I was happy that I more than doubled my money. Unfortunately, this tale follows the story of my life which is always selling way too early as that's a $5k+ card today

I don't have any super crazy stories like some on here, but I've had a few decent steals!

Most recently two come to mind:

1. Last off-season a sealed hobby box of 2016 Contenders was put up for auction simply labeled 16 contenders. I won it for $65. It took everything in me not to rip but I ended up selling it a couple days after receiving for $175 (I see now they're going for $275+).
2. The second has to do with everything hitting just right. I bought a Jimmy G Contenders Gold Rookie Ink (#1/25) auto a week before he was traded to SF. The seller also misspelled his last name. I won it for roughly $30 and ended up flipping it the week of his second start for $120. (At their peak this off-season I saw one go for $800+).

On both of them I didn't get max value, but a win is a win in the card world.

I picked up a ton of Garoppolo stuff in 2014 and 2015 from misspelled eBay listings. I think the best ones were a Topps Museum Collection RPA /100 for $6 and a Crown Royale Silhouettes /49 for around $15. The latter auction somehow managed to not only misspell "Royale," "Silhouettes," and "Garoppolo" in the title, but also listed it as 2015.

A few years ago my friend was looking through craigslist, and found a add for a pawn shop type place that had 2005 Topps Chrome boxes. They were retail boxes. 3 sealed, and one opened with only one pack taken out.

Bought them for $90 total.

That was by far my best flip.

I know one of the boxes I sold on eBay the buyer wrote me back saying the box contained an Auto and a Rodgers RC, so I'm happy someone got something good out of it too.

Using the criteria that the player had to be hot at the time to qualify as a steal, I'd have to say it's my 2002 Playoff Contender Tom Brady (Hawaii variant, #1 of 15). Pretty darn sure I paid less than $15 for this back in '09 or '10 when Brady had already impacted the hobby and was hot yet again as the Pats were well on their way to another Superbowl. I think folks were just too focused on his rookie cards to care about the '02 issues at the time. Finally got it graded (PSA 8) this year.

My best was baseball. A guy I worked with at Ft Bragg approached me after PT and asked if I had any cash because he needed to pay a bill that am. He told me he had a whole stack of old baseball that he would give me.

I gave him $50 and forgot about it and two weeks later he reminded me and handed me a a stack of cards. All 1953 topps with a rubber band around them. He said they were in his grandparents attic. As I looked through I pulled out a Mantel and told him it was worth a lot.

He said no worries, they were rotting in an attic and I helped him out. I sold most of the cards for $300 and the Mantle for $900. To this day the mantle is the only card I have ever regretted and maybe a Lebron exquisite 9.5 3 color rc patch auto.

Mine was a 2 stepper.

Bought a Patrick Mahomes Gold Prizm Auto BGS 9.5/10 for $500, flipped it 2 weeks later for almost a $1000. Then used that money to pick up 9.5/10 Purple Bowman Chrome Autos of Vlad & Tatis, sold those for $1800. Nice little return on this one.

Also this year before the season started, picked up a raw blue auto BC Teoscar Hernandez for $25, sold it for over $300 after he hit a few HR's in April.

I bought a 5k box about a week and a half ago. Paid $20 because it looked like all base and low end inserts and RCs of guys that aren't playing any longer.

Sorted it out and found 3 1989 Southern Miss schedules with Favre on front. Sold them for $28 apiece. Also found a Tom Brady JE Century #d/112 that I sold for $100. So up to about $175 thus far on the $20 purchase and have sold four cards out of the box.
