View Full Version : Will today's sets hold value over time?

Pretty simple question there.
I ask because I recently bought a 5k count box of inserts, RCs, base, parallels, etc. for $20 and have been sorting them by brand. I've been thinking about putting some of the sets together. But I'm a few cards short on most.
I'm talking the 100 or so card base set of like Certified, Elite, sets of Contenders Draft/GameDay, etc. even up to sets like Prizm, Select, etc. So I'm talking the sets with no RCs mainly the 1-100 base, or 1-200 in terms of Classic.
I'm debating on whether it's worth it to spend the money to get the last few cards to finish the sets. I'm thinking of possibly doing that or even buying a couple more boxes like I did to get more cards and maybe be able to get the cards I need or start other sets.
I don't want to buy the cards or put the sets together if they're going to go down or not hold value (like 1980s-1990s sets). We know that's all mass produced, but today's stuff isn't. Just wanted to get everyone's opinions on the future value of today's sets.

Yesterday's sets (not early 90s, but 1995-2010) haven't held much value, and I don't see that changing outside of the usual suspects that someone will inevitably mention below. With that said, outside of maybe 1-2 of this smaller grouping of sets, the value in this category is trending downward as well.

I can’t imagine the new current collectors collect sets. But I’ve been wrong before.

So if it's not worth building sets, would it be wise to continue sorting but pull the couple of key names from the base lots? Like Brady, Rogers, Brees, maybe AP, and just leave everything else in their sets? I've sorted all of the inserts, parallels and refractors by team. Left all of the RCs in the sets (that I've sorted thus far) and pulled all of the Cowboys for shows I do here in the Dallas area.
By the way, the box had about 50 Brady cards. There were a handful from now, but most were from his early days (2001-2005), so probably not a ton of value.
But I bought it without knowing what was in it. The LCS had one, and I offered and they accepted. They said they'd rather get $20 than have to go through the time and effort to sort and price all of it.

If you don't enjoy the act of putting sets together and like having complete sets.... I would not bother spending money to complete them.
It has been my experience that once players stop playing, the base does NOT go up.
It's certainly possible some random particular set could go up in value in the future, but likelihood is, 90%+ of all current cards will go down in value in the future complete set or not complete set.
But if you happen to own cards for the "IT" set in the future, they will go up even if you don't have a complete set....

No because Poopnini only matters for the sick MOJO hitz.
Plus group breakers.

A lot of the enjoyment for me over the years has been sorting and putting the sets together. That's no matter the sports, baseball or football. That's the math in me. I just like the time spent sorting, putting in numerical order and making a list of what I need/what I have leftover.

Sets used to be one card usually per player when I was young. Now there’s just too many to care.

If you really want to sell it - yes pull out the "better" cards of the few stars who sell that you listed and sort the rest by team.....
Pretty much the only time I but non-rookie base is Seahawks team lots.... And I think most team collectors are the same way.

That's the way I did when I had a shop. I sorted everything by team. Might do that with this box and just buy another box or 3 or 4 for the fun of it. I really enjoy going through a box like that. Almost like Christmas Day for me.
So far I've pulled Brady, Rogers, Brees, P. Manning and AP. That's all I can think of when it comes to popular guys like that here in Texas.

Does AP base sell well? It seems like even his rookies are down some over their highs a few years ago.

Look at all the post-2000 RBs. None of their values have held up over time. Tomlinson a bit, but even he is nowhere where he used to be.
AP is going the same way.

Not sure. Only pulled him because he's from about 60 miles from here. Can always put him back into his team lots. May just do Brady, Rogers and Brees and a few Cowboys.

Two things.
First, if you want please feel free to pull any Champ Bailey's you find. Much appreciated.
Second, Brady cards from 2001-2005 can be straight money. 2002 Topps Chrome sells fairly well for a common base card($20ish raw I believe, $200 as a PSA10). I'd look into those more closely if I were you.

Rare Eddie George stuff still sells pretty well

Build the sets if that's what you enjoy but doubt you are going to flip them for any profit. I collect sets and I have never completed one that I couldn't have bought cheaper already completed by someone else. I do it for fun though which is what a hobby should be.
Most set collectors are old school collectors that collected back when each card company had one or two sets a year. Now days set collectors would go broke trying to get a set of all the releases for one year and the space they would take up would be crazy. There are set collectors out there that might like one particular set each year like Chrome or something but for the most part set collectors are a dying breed.

The last football set I actually put the time and effort into actually building was 2015 Topps Heritage. It's a beautiful card design. Before that, I put together sets of 2014 Prizm and 2015 Platinum. I still own these, never got around to selling them, mostly because complete modern card sets just don't move the needle anymore. Seems to be a waste of time and energy, since most everyone these days is more interested in maaasssiiivvveee sick mojoz

Both of these sentiments are true, unfortunately.

Even back in the day only a few sets were widely collected...Topps chrome, Topps, UD, spa, and ?. Now the only large set to collect is score which isn't very popular.
Its not just those brands being gone that has stopped set collecting because there are still some large underrated sets like Donruss..just in this day and age why collect base sets when you can collect auto sets which you couldn't do back in the day.
