Pre season Hockey is almost here and the Pens are about to be back in action! Hopefully this year they can raise another Cup with the core staying together of Crosby, Malkin, and Letang :)! New additions of Jack Johnson and the return of veteran Matt Cullen should be interesting. I expect another big year from Jake Guentzel who finished the playoffs on absolute fire last year with 21 points in only 12 games :eek: So here is to making it 3 cups in 4 years......

I'm no fan of Malkin, but I'm torn on that hit. I've watched it a bunch of times, and to me it seems like he was just trying to chip Oshie to prevent him from getting to Crosby after the pass was made. He definitely leaned in with the upper arm/shoulder, but I don't think it was a blatant headshot.

I think that might merit a decent fine, and I think Malkin plays with a somewhat dirty edge much of the time, but I don't think that one was horrible. Or am I way off?

That hit is the style they’re trying to remove from the game. No I don’t think geno was trying to injure him. Geno gets pissed and takes stupid penalties. He doesn’t have a history of headshots. I can see a good fine and maybe like a 2 game suspension.

I'm hoping it's just a fine. You're right that they're trying to remove shots to the head, but I don't know that Malkin had many options in that position. Such a tough call, I'm curious to see how it plays out.

And I say that as an advocate of heavy suspensions.

I’d say fine only if he didn’t have the option of dodging him. I’ve watched it enough, geno saw him coming and hit him. He could have gotten out of the way. Hell I could have gotten out of the way and I’m not a great skater, so geno has no excuse except he wanted to hit him due to frustration. But he didn’t leave his feet, no injury, no history, maybe he just gets a fine. But I’m still expecting 1-2 games or something just as a warning like “hey we’ll suspend superstars too”.

DeSmith is playing very well right now. Very small sample size, but 2nd in the league in save % and 3rd in GAA last time I checked.

Everyone here probably knows I'm as big a Murray fan as there is, but GD is he struggling right now. Keep DeSmith as the starter for the time being.

No sense depending on Murray. He's done. I'm a huge fan of his, but I'll admit that.

I'm concerned though, that GMJR will make a couple desperate trades that hurt the team in the long run. If he's gonna make trades - IMO they should be big ones, not giving up a 1st rounder and two roster players for a rental.

I was at the game on Saturday. Pens came out looking great through 2. Then disappeared in the 3rd.

It is insane how much better Sid is than everyone else on the ice. Watching him in person gives you a better vision of all the little things he does on the ice that most other players don't. He just looks so much more fluid than everyone.

My thoughts on the Maatta/Johnson pairing.

Hopefully some of you have seen A Serbian Film. The part where the main character wakes from being drugged, has no memory of what happens, and returns to the warehouse that the filming took place. He finds the camera, and watches the mini DV tapes. You just KNOW something awful is on those tapes. But when you see it, it's something more horrifying than anything you could have imagined. That's what that pairing looks like to me.

Few years ago Maatta seemed like such an amazing prospect, Johnson seemed like a great acquisition and nether of those things has worked out yet. But Maatta is still very young (and had to deal with a LOT of crap already) and Johnson is still new to the organization. Now if they don't start producing by the trade deadline or if you're generous the end of the season, might be time to cut ties and make a trade.

Cancer (wasn’t it cancer? Maybe blood clot) plus a few injuries slowed him down and took him off the ice. That’s why I’m still hopeful he bounces back because as good as letang is he’s not a stay at home shut down defensemen.

Yeah but that's the problem. He hasn't proven to be able to do jack all without Sid next to him. So we're paying a premium for a winger who's premium only exists because of his linemates. Look at all the other "great wingers" sid played with who left and then sucked because, gasp, no sid.

Yep. I know most here do not love Matt Murray, and I don't mean that in a Murray/Fleury debate. But I think the most important thing for the team to get back where they need to be is Murray getting back to form. So far (knocks on wood), he has done that in the 4 games since he's returned. .927, .969, 1.000, .931 Save Percentages in those 4 games and only 6 GA. Hope it continues. Yes, I'm a fan of his. But his play earlier sucked. Very encouraging these last 4 games. I think going forward, HCMS should continue to use DeSmith as well, because he's been very solid. I also thing Murray plays better when he's pushed.

And of course, great to see Rust scoring. Crosby continues to be a beast and Letang continues his solid year. Cullen has looked better since his return, and Sheahan has looked immensely better as of late.

Call me crazy, but Jack Johnson is adequate right now. Still not crazy about the contract, but he's playing ok recently.

No doubt. Really nothing to not be pleased with lately, other than Brassard. I like the guy, but he just hasn't worked out.

I was a little bit nervous, but it was evident he was injured. IMO, at least. And the team is playing immensely better in front of him, which certainly helps. As do the posts, haha!

No clue. They made the Pens revert back to many of their hideous November tendencies. Poor defensive zone coverage, ill advised pinches, just an overall lazy effort. Disappointing to see.

Hope they recover vs the Cats tomorrow.

Beat the best. Lose to the worst. Pretty much par for the course this season. But I thought the Pens played a very solid 2nd and 3rd vs the TBL. Sans the last 5 minutes or so.

It's another "trade tomorrow to win with the core" plays. But if you count up the draft picks we used to get the players we used to trade AND the picks in the trade, that's a lot of freaking draft picks. Basically when Malkin/Sid/Letang ect shuffle off we'll have basically NOTHING coming behind them and will go from contender to worst team in the league in exactly 1 or 2 years.

I think you’re forgetting, or are too young to remember mismanagement lead to us going from 1967 to 1989 with zero cups and nearly losing the franchise to another city. If it wasn’t for lemieux there’d be no penguins and it was by random chance that we got Crosby. It’ll be an issue in the future.

It's a trend this year, check out the Flyers and Pens outdoor game jerseys, the NHL all star game jerseys, the NBA all star jerseys, these designs *seem* popular. In honesty I don't like the Pens outdoor jersey or the flyers.
