View Full Version : Peyton Manning - will the HGH story ever die?
I've collected some Manning cards and always been a fan. A fellow Manning collector forwarded me this Washington Post article from earlier this summer:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/debate-over-peyton-manning-and-hgh-still-bubbles-years-after-al-jazeera-documentary/2018/06/07/1b86bcac-687f-11e8-9e38-24e693b38637_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.2072dbcdcd5b
I haven't followed this story that closely (obviously) but it seems to be a story that just won't die. What do you guys think? Did Manning juice or not? If he juiced, I wish someone would show the proof... or just let this thing die.

I've always thought he used HGH. It seemed strange to me he bought HGH under his name to give to his wife.
I still enjoyed watching him as a player. He's retired, who cares?

As fans we wear rose colored glasses when it involves "our guy"..
Looking at it logically, should it disappear? Probably not, and the media went easy on him while these accusations were out there.
After coming back from major neck surgery he went out and shattered passing records while most of the experts (including those with the Colts) felt like his days of being a dominant QB were over.
Instead he may have played his best football after the surgery up until the speculation of HGH surfaced, then he came back down to earth and looked terrible by Peyton Manning standards.

That report also refuses to die. But the HGH reports are more damning, I think. I expect both reports will come up a ton when he comes up for the Hall of Fame. Maybe they will die off for good after that?

I don't think the NFL HOF voters are that damning with HGH rumors and whatnot. They certainly have no issues putting in players with criminal question marks - Harrison, Lewis. Or HGH with Lewis. Peyton will get into the HOF with ease no matter what comes out. Manning's are a protected species in the football world. And the NFL probably doesn't want to open that door. ;)
I have no proof of course, but I am pretty convinced that Brady is full on board the HGH train as well. It won't matter with him either. I think the big reason he erased his phone was evidence of HGH talk/transactions more than stupid deflated footballs. He also has an "outside" personal trainer. His two besties - Peyton and Edelman have HGH hits. Coupled with his time defying play on the field.

Who cares? Well, I think a lot of people do. Otherwise, why would the juicing story and also the sexual misconduct story persist for so long?
In addition, I care because I collect him but I worry that if/when he is exposed with solid proof that the value of my cards will plummet. We've seen this happen in baseball many times (McGwire, Sosa, Bonds, Clemens, etc., etc.). I have collector friends who literally lost six figures on these juicers!
And do you and other people really think juicing doesn't help player performance? Not to be rude, but that is kinda mind-blowing.

This won’t matter at all... pure steroid use in the nfl is a 4 game suspension and nobody even cares. Just look at the guys playing in the nfl; that will tell you everything you need to know. If manning used hgh in an attempt to help nerves in his neck regenerate faster... then so be it
Manning has an enormous collector base; anything further with this story won’t mean anything. His stats, Super Bowls, hall of fame induction; none of it will be affected by this in the slightest.
I can see where your fear lies with bonds, Clemens, McGwire. Sosa.... but this ain’t baseball

I can see your point. And I know he has a big collector following. But it also seems like there are a lot of people who don't like him (or don't like the Mannings), constantly pointing to these allegations against him or talking about how he was a great regular-season quarterback but an enormous disappointment in the postseason. He's not like Jeter or Jordan or Ripken where everyone loves him, that is for sure. So that is where my caution lies.

So that is where my caution lies.I think theres a good reason to show caution if you're spending hundreds and thousands of dollars on his cards, specifically because of what happened with Sosa, McGwuire, Bonds, etc..
My honest feelings on this HGH usage in the NFL is this.. tons of players use it, specifically to heal from injuries. Its known, but not ever talked about, because of its legality and the rules against it.
Manning used it to recover from his nearly career ending neck injury and stopped when he got word of his impending drug test.
Same thing happened with Julian Edelman IMO. he was using to help aid recovery for his potential career ending knee injury and though he stopped in time for his test, but obviously did not.
In this context, I have mixed feelings about its use. If used specifically to aid in recovery (for a short period) from some of the more concerning injuries that NFL players suffer, it should be approved and allowed under supervision.

Baseball comparisons are totally out of place.
Absolutely iconic numbers were being broken, so people felt "cheated." Toppling 61 home runs or 755 for career home runs simply has no equivalent football.
Did Manning break records? Of course, I'm not implying that he didn't...but football has never been the stat based game that baseball is.

Seems like some of you are saying it's just not a big deal in football. But if that's the case, why has the media brought it up so many times with respect to Manning? I remember they wouldn't even leave the guy alone when he made his retirement announcement for crying out loud!

there are detractors to everyone....... i know bunch of people who who don't like ripken, people that think jordan is an a-hole and don't like him, people who think jeter is grossly over-rated
everyone has an opinion and that's just the way of the world...... some people don't like the "manning" family entitlement..... and that falls 99 percent on eli still having a job with the giants when his play has been less than stellar and the team hasn't played well in quite a while
nobody ever thought peyton got undeserved chances or didn't earn what he got. in the big scheme of things manning is grossly undervalued on a lot of his top tier items....... we are looking at rodgers topps chrome rc refractor /1000 to /1500 at least selling for over a grand raw? the 98 ex credentials manning /54 should be among the most iconic football cards ever produced; yet you can get one for that same 1000-1200..... it's crazy to be honest
i wouldn't worry one bit about manning moving forward...... brady has a ton of noise due to "being a cheater", the personal trainer thing wreaks of hgh or other performance enhancers...... and nobody will care when it comes to buying his cards........ i actually think manning is a fabulous buy on the highest end right now... and if prices happen to dip at all because of this... take it as a golden opportunity to buy

Here is the problem with many people in this thread...they are quick to rush to judgement based on the court of public opinion and they love a good conspiracy.
One guy said Peyton Manning was taking HGH. One rando pharmacy intern. Now the NFL investigated and said they found no wrong doing. Heck the guy who made the claims even came back and renounced them. That doesn't matter. It is out in the news and you've got plenty of people in here eating it up. That is the issue because if something even gets a single article in a major newspaper it will be taken as fact by some, right or wrong.

You know that's not true, you just say that because I bring up things you don't want to actually look at, let alone acknowledge.
It's brought up because it's pretty obvious he did it. If you think that something deserves to die simply because the law, or the NFL (for personal interests only), thinks it should die, OK.

He said it was for his wife. It was addressed to his wife per Al Jazeera. Her doctor said it was for her. The NFL investigated and found it checked out.
Now could it have been for him? Sure. But I either have to believe a whole handful of people are lying or I have to believe a single guy is lying (a rando pharmacy intern). I'll go with innocent until proven guilty.
Sorry, but you're pulling the wool over your own eyes on this one.
You realize the investigation was after he retired, right? What incentive did the NFL have to find him guilty? NONE. Absolutely NONE. It would only stand to hurt the shield (always priority #1 for the NFL).
It was addressed to his wife. And? You genuinely believe the HGH was for his wife? Give me a break.
Cleveland Indians Pitcher Chris Perez once got busted for having weed mailed to his house. The weed was addressed to his dog (this is not a joke).

What incentive did the NFL have to find Tom Brady guilty? It hurt the shield. What incentive did the NFL have to find Ezekiel Elliott guilty when he had no criminal charges against him? That hurt the shield too.

The difference is that those two were still in the league.
What could they have even done to Manning, had they wanted to? He was retired. And maybe even more importantly, the face of Papa John + NFL advertising.
Those two examples kind of make the point that the NFL is horrendous at doling out punishment, so taking what they say as absolute truth is silly.

Is Manning a convicted felon?
Are you a troll?
These are the questions of our generation.

Do you remember Peyton mentioning drinking some Budweiser after his SB win? NFL players aren't allowed to promote alcohol. But since he was then retired/retiring, nothing happened.
Peyton was the NFL's "good guy" to oppose Tom Brady, the "bad guy".

The NFL said Peyton didn't do it, and you want to believe that.
I get it.

Players can’t but the league can all day long? Sounds like America.

You intentionally missed the point, because you want to believe in Peyton Manning.

The Charlie Sly "recant" video is amazing. It literally looks like a Tim and Eric Awesome Show sketch.

The phrase is actually “innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.” And to an unbiased observer, the guy *has* been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. There’s just no plausible deniability here.
I say this as someone who really doesn’t think it’s a big deal. But let’s not bury our heads in the sand.

It is more likely than not that he used it. Having said that, I do not care, but we know if it was a Brady allegation the story would have 400 pages.

Haha true!
Congrats to Drew Brees. Another Peyton record bites the dust. :(

I thought this was going to be some kind of funny spoof about the Manning allegations. It wasn't.

Pretty obvious he did when you look at the timing of it all and the monster 2013 season and subsequent rapid decline. Still a legend.

Who cares anymore? Brady did it after his injury, Edelman too. Just let them all do it, right?
