View Full Version : Am I right to be livid? And, what would you do?

I am looking for a little input here. Here is the background. I purchased this box for my collection during the last 15% off coupon day on eBay. The seller messaged me the day after purchase saying they were out of town and that they would ship the box as soon as they got back. No big deal to me. I was looking forward to getting the box but I appreciated the communication. Fast forward to today and I pick up the box at the P.O. and it is shipped in one of those USPS Priority bags. Not a box, or even a bubble envelope, a bag. I feel the box through the bag and I am already worried. When I get home I open the bag and the box is not destroyed but it is showing some wear. Now some or all of the wear may have been present before shipping, but the box is mildly crumpled and there are minor tears to the original cellophane as well as corner wear wear the cellophane is torn. I purchased the box at $399.95 BIN and another $12.90 Shipping. After the coupon, I am into the box for about $352 which I think is a very fair price. To add insult to injury the postage paid is on the shipping label and the seller paid $12.90 to ship the box this way. If they would have printed the label on eBay they would have paid $12.85 to ship the box in a Medium Flat Rate Box

So my question is, am I right to be upset? And should I:

1. Return the box for a refund
2. Keep and leave Neutral Feedback
3. Keep and leave Negative Feedback

Not what I was expecting

Maybe the box was placed in a shipping box and then the bag? Nope

I am not a good photographer, but the box is crumpled on both sides

Good question. No, I don't believe so. In fact this was the only item they have sold when looking at their history. Their feedback shows no feedback from known sportscard sellers. Nevertheless, they knew enough to price the box at $400 and I feel like should have known enough to package the box in an appropriate manner.

Yikes. Return it.

Leaning towards this. Thanks for your opinion.

I get this line of thinking if I was gonna rip the box. But this box was supposed meant to stay unopened in my collection. I was adding it to my 90's unopened collection. So the display or aesthetics of the box matter. It would be analogous to if you bought a card for your PC and the seller mailed the card without a top loader or sleeve of any kind and it showed up with a couple creases and a messed up corner.

return it...….

Another vote for this. Thanks for the input.

Hmm... not one of my original ideas. I will take it into consideration, lol.

If the box condition is as important as a card's condition, then personally, those creases would be all I could think about. Especially if this is for display like memorabilia AND especially if I could replace (the 90's box).

Without a doubt and no hesitation, I would return it. Since it arrived damaged, you shouldn't have to pay for return shipping.

yes, return it. this is really dumb to ship like that, honestly. i would've bubble wrapped it and put it in a cardboard box.

Return it. I collect unopened too and would not at all be happy with that.

Considering the plans you had for the box, return it. Box should have been shipped in a medium flat rate. I always would pay a few extra bucks to make sure something I plan on keeping is shipped safely.

Return it and find another one in good condition.

Honestly, it all depends on what you are planning to do with the box. From the pics given it looks like the edges of the box are a little dented. If this is the case, I doubt the cards were affected. The packs are located in the center of the box and not near the edges. here is a pic of a box I opened last year.....

I hate lazy shippers. Probably same guy that complains when you didn't ship his card out at 9:05am the following morning.

Lol I think that’s what makes me angry the most about this thread is the fact I didn’t buy some when I could.

return it in a brown paper bagYes! That would be cool :-)

I would keep it! Packs are in the middle and its getting harder and harder to find and get those kind of boxes.
In addition a neutral feedback would be ok ... the box came but he did not cared about safe shipping.

I’d keep it but ding their whatever you can ding on eBay.

Funny that I got a card from Panini this week: card was in a one touch, in an envelope which was in a bag which was in a box. And it’s probably only a $50 card.

Careless shipping? Sure but depends on if you're buying the box itself or just the packs. For me it's not something I would care much about if the packs inside are still good. I say just keep it, considering it was with a promo too. Last year I bought a LeBron UDA photo ($400) and it arrived in a plain see-thru white envelope, curved so it could fit in my mailbox. No damage to the photo itself though so it was all good. Kept it and don't remember if I left positive feedback, or just no feedback at all.

That is a considerate seller.

Based on the location of the packs I think I would keep it too. Given the current trend in prices you may be able to flip later after you find another one to replace it with. As others have said, this stuff is not always easy to find.

I also agree about appropriate feedback on ebay.

LOL at this. I got a $10 card from them in a one touch, in a bag, in a padded envelope inside a second padded envelope. It did happen to be jersey numbered though so maybe they thought that was like a 2000% premium? lol

In regards to the OP, given that the packs are centered in that box I would open it, but I'm horribly biased as I love busting 90s wax. Your ire is justified, however. No doubt.

What an idiot of a shipper.

Understood that the packs are in the center, I remember well these being on display in card shops, but OP said he's not even opening it. I'd think it'd be a no-brainer return.

If you were planning on opening it I would say just open it. But since you collect sealed product a return is fine.

Just my P.O.V. and maybe help you with what you already know.

Do you have a right to be livid and/or upset?
Answer: Yes.

I've had a similar experience with the Tyvek bag vs. a box.

1) Did you communicate with the seller how important it was to receive a near pristine box?
2) Have you communicated to the seller how you received the box?

Personally, I would leave negative for when I have no other recourse.
They did their part.
They just didn't use the best judgement on packaging.

Some sellers don't seem to care about your feelings or expectations, as long as they get paid.

The S&H cost you paid matched the actual postage.
I can't fault the seller on that.
I get pissed, when the actual cost is less than half what I paid (and the care/handling isn't there).

You've probably already asked yourself these questions.
1) Can I spare the money to keep it and buy another?
2) Is it worth the time to (not know what cards can salvaged) and return it?
3) Are you willing to wait (however long it takes) to find another box that looks the way you want it?

It matters to you.
Does it matter to anyone else?
Are you saving it for someone special?
You've read what others say.

1) If you had caused this damage (i.e. dropping it), what would you do then?
2) If you lost everything in a fire, what would you do?
Would you rebuild your collection to the same exacting standards?
After looking at it from the most unlikely circumstances, focus in to what matters to you the most.
Ask yourself - what are you willing to settle for?

I hope that helps you think about it without the anger.

For what it's worth, I recall Masterpieces were only hit from fresh cases with clean boxes. This not being the case severely effected the value. Return!

Seriously, the cards inside should be fine.

Why is there a piece of scotch tap over the middle of the box?

I'm not super familiar with boxes from the late 90's, so I'm not sure if that was from the manufacturer or if someone previously opened this box or if it's holding some of the wrapping in place?

Just thought that looked weird.
