Guess we need one too. Hopefully Luck doesn’t get murdered this season.

Go Colts.

The game plan on offense has to be more balanced than that. Luck was terrific. Hopefully, Mack can return soon and inject more of a threat on the ground.

Was Wilkin’s stat line better than he looked?

Glad to see luck playing great. Too bad that dipstick fumbled at the end. Luck needs to learn to never run right into the action though. He ran it like that once and got a late head shot. As much as I love football that’s why most qbs only run in wide open space.

I thought Wilkins was fine. Mack will be returning, but I think Wilkins showed he can be a capable backup in the mix.

Actually, I thought the line was far improved overall, but the LT position isn’t going to work out when a backup is going against Dunlap. That’s a total mismatch. When Castonzo comes back, I’m thrilled at the thought of him playing along with Kelly and Nelson. I’m very pleased so far, even with the loss.

I thought the line looked pretty good. AC not there was big, but the larger problem is with Luck holding it too long. He has the opposite problem of a chicken #@#@#@#@ in the pocket, but it should be addressed with his coaches. Phil sims and Boomer talked about it at halftime. The head shot was cheap as F, but Lucks been around long enough to know the dirty side. Only the Saints were dumb enough to say it out loud, but the teams are going to do whatever to the qb.

Lacerated kidney and torn up shoulder should be enough...

Well played game today.

Still kind of worried about the long ball. A lot of those downfield passes aren't very tight. Either way it's good to see him pick and choose his spots well. Also good to see the running game effective as well.

And holy crap Leonard is a beast.

The Colts had so many opportunities to win that game. After the drops by Rogers (2) and Ebron in the end zone Luck didn't look nearly as sharp, for whatever reason. The Eagles were handing them that game!

I’m really liking what I’m seeing at times. The defense has some playmakers in Leonard and Hunt. There’s a lot to like. The missed tackles on the run defense was certainly a concern, and I really need to see more out of the offense. The defense had to save the offense a lot, which is a a double edged sword. On one hand, nice to see the defense step up, but not so nice to see the offense look so lethargic. The running game was almost non-existent. The passing game wasn’t far behind.

But, can we talk about the defense again? Leonard and Hunt are ridiculous.

shayscards79
09-23-2018, 04:15 PM
I don't doubt that Luck is playing pain free at this point. I just hope at some point the arm strength starts coming back. The fact they had to bring Brissett in for a hail Mary is very disheartening.

I’ve seen a lot of teams do that where they bring in the big gun to sling it. It doesn’t concern me much, and could just be, at worst, a case where the coaching staff knows it a simple heave play and there’s no reason to risk injury.

To be fair, Brees had been trending upward to 8.0 YPC in 2006 before he tore his labrum. In 2007 that dropped to 6.8 YPC before it started going back up year to year. It may take the whole season for him to be back 100 percent.

This is not unheard of. Lucks arm is back as good as ever.

Didn't like the ending, but I really do like the coaches direction. Luck isn't getting pummeled, which is a great thing. Early in the season still plenty of time :)!

And I’m really quite fine with that. I think it’s important to be realistic. My hope for this season is to build, not have a pie in the sky expectation that Indy is a deep postseason playoff contender. I love what I’m seeing on defense so far. Luck will need time and I’m fine with that, too. The weapons aren’t all there yet. Next year, I expect a lot more.

But id argue they didn't really play to win.

They threw a little dink pass that even if they completed would have stayed in bounds and they'd be nowhere near field goal range.

Half measure.

I get it if they would have gone downfield.

Bad call.

I was watching it live. The conventional wisdom was to settle for the tie, of course, but the Colts saw a chance to pick up a 1st and then maybe another quick 10 yards to try for a game-winning kick as time expired. It was basically a short 4th down conversion with the element of surprise. Odds are probably decent on that, I think, they just didn't pull it off.

If they got the first down they run up and spike it. A few quick throws and they could have been in field goal range. If they are fine with a tie they might as well call it a season.

The coach had nothing to do with the two fumbles/ gift td’s,the ten or so drops, and all the penalties.

No issues at all with the call at the end. Shouldn't have even come to that anyway. If you're playing a statement game against a divisional opponent you go for that every time. Have to show confidence in your team and strength on offense.

They still had a TO too.

They would have needed another 15-20 yards to get in FG range.

I like taking the risk but you have to know that if you don’t get the 1st down you’re giving the Texans a win. If they were on the Houston 45 or midfield it makes more sense but even then I guess Houston still does a quick few throws and they still win.

Brady made it look easy. He's such a craftsman and a legend and an incredible thing to witness. Luck had some absolutely beautiful throws tonight. The TD to Ebron stands out the most - the way the ball sailed across the field before tucking itself perfectly into Ebron's hands - wow!! Two major upsides are a.) the Colts have 10 days to "rest" and b.) they play the Jets, Bills, and Raiders next before facing the Jags and Titans. It's going to be a very interesting and exciting next few weeks for this team.

You think Ballard is going get Luck any help this year? I know he'll never pay a guy like Dez or Leveon Bell because he's all in on defense. Or do you think it's at the point now where it's not worth it to add payroll given 1-5 alreday?

I'm just interested to see what they do with this excess cash in the off season. Do they bother loading up on offense?

I don't see them making a move. This offseason I can see Irsay and Ballard opening up the checkbook, but I don't see Bell or Dez being any kind of long term answer. Irsay has gone on the record, awhile back, as saying that he'd rather invest for the long term rather than fill the roster out with FA's for the short term to potentially "win now" which is what a Dez move would be. Bell is a major risk/reward player and I think it's easy to forget that he's one suspension away from being entirely useless. I don't see Bell making the team better for the long term without costing a metric ton and coming with serious baggage. Not sure I want that kind of guy in my locker room.

They definitely won't be adding any Dez Bryant's or Le'Veon Bell's this season. They'll have roughly $100M in cap space this off-season though, and will have a ton of draft capital (definitely a top 10 pick, maybe top 5 again). This off-season will be where you see Ballard spend big in free agency. They have to get 1-2 WRs this off-season who are TRUE difference makers. TY will be 29 next season and they don't have another WR on the roster who can make an opposing defense gameplan to shut them down. Deon Cain was looking like he might be a legitimate threat so hopefully he comes back healthy and ready to make a difference. They honestly can't rely on that though. They either have to invest heavily in a top-level WR in free agency or draft one pretty high in the draft (2nd round). Maybe do both. They also have to invest heavily in the CB position. Quincy Wilson being a bust has hurt big time. Kenny Moore is nice but if he's one of your top-2 CBs you've got a bad group. The D-Line is looking much improved, so if they're healthy and the young guys continue to develop you might not have to do much there in the off-season. The biggest need they'll have to fill in the draft is the RT spot. That can't continue to be a revolving door. Also might not be a bad idea to see if they can improve the LT spot too. Castonzo is starting to get up there in age (he'll turn 31 next off-season) and his play has dipped since he signed his big contract extension. Seems like they've still got lots of areas of need but for once I don't think those areas are mostly on defense. They've got several good, young players on that side of the ball. Darius Leonard being an absolute stud right off the bat really helps with the construction of that defense.

I really like the direction the defense is heading. Darius Leonard was an absolute steal in the second round. Leonard leads the league in tackles despite missing a game last week. It's staggering how much of an impact player he's been. He's on pace for nearly 200 tackles as a rookie, has 4 sacks and has forced turnovers. Anthony Walker Jr. has also been a revelation at linebacker and looks to be a major cog moving forward. I'm enjoying what the front seven is doing with Sheard, Hunt, Turay, Autry and Ward. They are generating pressure which is something we rarely ever saw with the Pagano regime. The issue on defense is the defensive backfield. Aside from Hooker, I don't see anyone else as dependable nor particularly talented. Geathers impresses me, but he's a health issue. Quincy Wilson is really disappointing me after showing glimpses early last year as a rookie. If they can't cover, it doesn't matter how good the pass rush or run defense is. Good offenses will just pick them apart. This needs to be addressed in the draft.

Offensively, I feel like Indy finally has an offensive line. Yes, Castonzo is getting older, but he is a major step up from anyone else who has occupied the LT slot in his absence. Ryan Kelly is playing well at C, but could improve. I love how the Guard positions seemed to be much improved from just one draft. Quenton Nelson is continuing to grow and playing well. Braden Smith is impressing me, as well. Both were drafted this year. Obviously, the issues on offense are related to the so called "skill positions" that have traditionally been a strength in Indy. What has me shaking my head is how some Colts fans on the Stampede Blue fan board are complaining about GM Chris Ballard not signing a top FA wide receiver or bringing back Moncrief.

Moncrief signed a one-year $9.6M deal to play in Jacksonville and so far he's averaging 3 catches a game and will, if he stays healthy, have between 700-800 yards with 6-8 touchdowns. Not exactly worth the money, if you ask me. Same with almost anyone else who was in the FA sweepstakes this year. Only Jarvis Landry has really impressed me and he was acquired in a trade. I simply don't see the value in overpaying for guys like Sammy Watkins, Allen Robinson or anyone else who was a FA this spring. I'm fine with this year being an evaluation year, but the position must be addressed in the offseason. Chester Rogers is a major disappointment and frankly there isn't anyone else on the active roster that does anything for me, aside from Hilton. TE finally looks as good as ever with Ebron being a TD machine and Doyle, hopefully, back from injury sooner than later.

Running Back is a question mark. Mack finally arrived this week and played a very strong second half, but I need more consistency from him. Hines is a tremendous pass-catcher, but lacks in the running game. Wilkins has shows flashes, but he's likely rotational at best. Not sure what to do here, but by the end of the season we should have a much better sense of what the future holds at RB, either because the group we have meshes well and finishes strong or because we need to look elsewhere for a more consistent rusher who can give the team an identity in the ground game.

Leonard is a special talent. Leads the league in tackles by a wide margin despite missing a game. Created turnovers, sacks, does it all. It’s been some time since I’ve been this excited to see the Colts defense on the field. Crazy that they severely lack corners, too. Still lots of room for improvement, but I like what I’ve seen this year, especially from the front seven.

And how about Luck? Has a near flawless performance today, without needing to launch 50 passes. Running game was tremendous. A much more balanced attack and against a really good defense. Oakland is a vulnerable squad, too. Next week will be interesting. Hopefully, Indy keeps trending up.

First time since 1985 the Colts have rushed for 200+ in two straight games.

First time since Joseph Addai in 2007 the Colts have had two straight 100-yard rushers (Marlon Mack).

Zero sacks of Luck today, Colts have best sack protection percentage in the league.

Luck threw all three TD’s to three different TE’s today, first time this has ever happened in league history.

Adam Vinatieri breaks NFL scoring record.

Colts move up to 3rd in the division, passing Jacksonville.

Not to mention that offense line. Ballard is crushing it with this draft. Still need a true #2 wideout and corners who can actual cover. It’s gonna be a great offseason with so much cap space and another draft. I’m really excited.

Yep.

I didn't have high hopes for this season. Just wanted to see Luck stay healthy and see some improvement in a few areas. Now..3-5 and 4 out of the next 5 against division rivals... They might surprise some people.

Only 3 teams have scored more points..but only 5 teams have allowed more points. If they can get the defense dialed in during the offseason... the Colts will be a tough team to beat next season.

I know it's really early and I'm not a huge fan of hyperbole but I truly believe that many years from now we will look back and say that Darius Leonard was Chris Ballard's most important player acquisition of his career as Colts GM. The kid is absolutely amazing, and he's the cornerstone of that side of the ball. There are still several more pieces to add to make this team a legit contender but Leonard is THE guy for the defense going forward. He'll be in the Colts Ring of Honor one day.

This coming off-season is going to be very important for the future of this franchise. I know you could say that about any off-season but for this team's current trajectory it's especially true. Ballard needs to knock this one out of the park to really build on the foundation of this past off-season/draft. IMO, the biggest needs on the roster are a true #1 CB and a WR2 who can eventually take over the WR1 spot from TY. They need several CBs though. I like Kenny Moore but if he's one of your top 2 DBs then your DB group isn't going to be good enough to win a championship. Ideally, Moore is your 3rd best DB on your roster.

shayscards79
10-29-2018, 04:29 PM
Not to mention that offense line. Ballard is crushing it with this draft. Still need a true #2 wideout and corners who can actual cover. It’s gonna be a great offseason with so much cap space and another draft. I’m really excited.

The common denominator here is the O-Line play for sure.

No coincidence that in the midst of this Marlon Mack explosion... Hines and Wilkins YPC has shot up over the past few games as well.

Indianapolis Colts 1st round pick, Guard, Quenton Nelson, just became the first rookie in NFL history to win Rookie of the Month at the Guard position. Wow!!! That's what happens when a team doesn't give up a sack in three straight games and paves the way for 200+ yards rushing in two straight games. Love seeing the Colts focus on trench stability for a change.

Ballard has to fix the defense in the off-season. They need to invest heavily into the CB position and then also find an edge-rush DE/LB that can create pressure. They've got young guys like Turay and Lewis but they shouldn't be relied upon that heavily yet. The CB position is by far the weakest spot on the team though, IMO. Kenny Moore would be a really good 3rd CB on the depth chart but he's currently our best CB.

Of course, they need to do something at WR as well this off-season but the defense is where the majority of the holes need to be filled.

I just got home from a family trip and was fortunate enough to avoid any possible outlets that would give away the score. Just saw the game. Wow, what a great first half on offense. Thankfully, the defense made a huge play at the end to seal it.

Indeed, the corners are desperately in need of an upgrade and work is certainly needed where the pass rush is concerned. Never gonna compete with the likes of a KC or NE without pressure and solid corner play.

“He could miss a little time,” Indianapolis head coach Frank Reich said during a conference call. “We are going to take a few days and monitor and assess it a little bit further before we kind of give it any status. He could miss a little bit of time.”

Was just reading some more about this.

Since they already performed the MRI and are saying "could miss a little time" it could be a lot worse. At least it seems there isn't any structural damage. Maybe it's just a sprain. Either way, if he's out even for a couple weeks that sucks since the line has been on a roll. They were saying Haeg could fill in since he played center before.

Worst game they've played since their London game against the Jags?

Yep. That's pretty accurate, Steve. The defense actually played a pretty solid game and did more than enough. Shutting the Jags out of the end zone and holding them to two FG's should always be enough, but the offense stunk up the joint. Dropped passes, questionable decision-making and penalties killed them. No excuse for it, but these are going to be learning opportunities for this young team moving forward. I see it as frustrating and disappointing, but far from the end of the world. Time to move on to Houston and finish as strong as possible.

Seeing what Luck can do with an offensive line is really exciting. They have a very rounded team and look close.

Needs: kicker. Everyone loves Adam, but it’s getting obvious.....
Wide receiver to pair with T.Y.
Pass rushers

I’m excited and enjoy the games a lot more not seeing the best Colt smeared every other play.

Some are projecting the Colts to take a WR in the first round and I'd be delighted to see that. Just not sure with Ballard though... I have a feeling they'll take a CB in the first round if a good one is available. They need a CB too.

However, either way they have the cap space to sign one or the other. I do agree with what Ballard said the other day about not making huge free agent signings to appease the fan base. They do need to look out for the future when they have to resign guys like Leonard and Nelson. But, a good WR signing would be nice.

Not starting a 2019 Thread in April LOL

Seriously??..... Every big game the Colts have in 2019 is on the Road.

@Chargers

@Chiefs

@Steelers

@Saints

At home they get Falcons, Raiders, Broncos, Dolphins and Panthers :coffee:

I noticed that also! Was hoping to get some tickets early but with this home schedule probably not. Maybe Atl or Oak? PUKE! Can't believe the NFL didn't give them at least one of those away games as a home game.

I'm a night owl... if Raiders game was a Sunday Night game... I'd consider that game.
