View Full Version : Young Players With Legitimately Rare RC's (A List For Your Viewing)

Overproduction sucks.
Here is a by-no-means complete list of some skill players on rosters and practice squads who, if they ever broke out, would actually have rookie cards with a legitimate element of scarcity.
Feel free to add more. I used Beckett's database to get the card totals.
For reference, Beckett shows Tom Brady as having 138 rookie cards. (I'm sure someone will correct me on this)
(on rosters)
- P Michael Dickson, 2018: 15 cards so far
- QB Kyle Sloter, 2017: 9 cards

- RB Peyton Barber, 2016: 12 cards!!!

It looks like the Beckett database has a generic entry (not a card) for Hill and not Sloter. The only card is apparently Hill has a Sports Illustrated 4 Kids card.

Great thread.
Not a "skill player" in the sense of offense but Adrian Colbert appears to have the a safety position for the Niners locked up. he only has Sage cards, and only 13 by my count including parallels and all that junk.
I snapped up a bunch of Breida last year because he seemed to have the speed, cuts that Hyde didn't. Not sure he'll hold on to that rushing lead, but he seems like a nice kid and a real team player.

overproduction sucks when all the cards are exactly the same, i.e. junk wax from 1987-1995. Yes, the industry makes piles of cards but there as many tiers of complexity and rarity as there are budgets. Football cards are just in a terrible spot with the hobby right now because the league does an awful job promoting any players who aren't a top 5 QB. That and basketball is winning the arms race big time. Can you imagine someone with the physical stature of Stephen Curry in the NFL? He would be dead in a quarter. Yet he is the ultimate weapon in the NBA, he is so relatable to just about any age/size fan.

Spot on. I tend to love the "deep cut" players. Undrafted, practice squad, late round guys who contribute. I'd love cards of ALL of those guys.
Give me a long snapper/punter subset. All day.

For anyone else who wants to add a player to the original post, just plug them + their rookie year into the Beckett database and post the number of cards they have in the same form that I have above. Then I can just copy+paste into the OP.

If you want to see some stunning numbers for star players, take a look at the soccer world. Top 5 US player Brendan Aaronson is in one set with a total print run of less than 1000 cards, including parallels. New Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez is only in Obsidian - total of 462 rookie cards. And my personal favorite Bukayo Saka of Arsenal - starter for club and country at age 20 - is in 3 sets (Impeccable metal rookies subset, Chronicles Pitch Kings Level IV, and Immaculate) with a total print run of maybe 400.

No one is happy pulling an offensive lineman's cards. Plenty of great O-Line dudes out there. But zero interest as far as collectibility. You have to be the best of the best. And even then, its a smaller market compared to the glamour positions.

Speak for yourself. There are plenty of O-Linemen I would love to pull out of packs.
Just on my PC team, I get giddy when I pull Tristin Wirfs and Ryan Jensen. I can think of other O-Linemen who are collectible: Tyron Smith, Lane Johnson, Zack Martin, Trent Williams, Jason Kelce to name a few.

I am not speaking for myself. I am speaking for the hobby. If O-Linemen were collectable, they would have been added to checklists years ago. Why hasn't that happened? Because the market isn't there. Ditto (most) kickers and (most) special team players.
The best you are going to get, are rookie year cards as those players are cheap set fillers for these companies.
Most base sets are now 100 cards. You have 32 starting QBs alone. Add in the star players for WR, TE, RB, LB, D-Line and the secondary. And the big boys on the line just don't work.
You get giddy, cause finding one in all that product being released is hard to do. If they were suddenly abundant, aint no one getting giddy.

Someone mentions a bunch of additional details, such as a player going 5x All-Pro, 3x Pro Bowler, possible future HOF'er. As if that somehow merits their inclusion in cards, even though the position is at the very bottom of the collectability chain.
If the post simple said "David Bakhtiari, 1 card " I wouldn't have said anything. Adding all of the other stuff, to make it seem like a huge omission, draws attention.
Also, from the OP "list of some skill players on rosters and practice squads who, if they ever broke out, would actually have rookie cards with a legitimate element of scarcity" It isnt "List some random players that have few rookie cards"

Not offended at all. I'm just shocked, that YOU are shocked that a 4th round Offensive Tackle doesn't have more rookie cards. What magnitude did a pac 12 lineman have back in 2013?
As for the accolades, and why I called that all out. How does what he ends up doing in the future, have any merit to him having rookie cards in the past? Did you invent time travel and not tell anyone?

I have a ton of O-Linemen cards, PSA-graded even, and they bring me WAY more joy than the Dante Pettis, Joe Williams and what have you (underachiveing skill position players) that have littered checklists for me.
I wish Spencer Burford had cards.
