Not buying boxes. I’ll buy the non-Barkley/Mayfield hits from case breakers on here and EBay for significantly less. Busting is expensive. In the long run you are guaranteed to lose and the excitement is not worth the money to me. It’s basically gambling but with pictures of grown men on cardboard so the losing stings a little less.

Short answer: when they stop making money off of their breaks. It will all come down to how much, on average, people will pay for teams to get in on the breaks. The lower that average, the less the breakers will be willing to pay for the cases so that they can still make money off of the break.

I’m in at under $140/box but don’t see this going down for months. Rosen and Mayfield starting this week, so that makes 4 first round QBs already as starters. You’ve got Saquon, Ridley just threw in an insane game (but I do not expect that to continue), some other RBs looking promising (Kerryon Johnson, Royce Freeman), and I personally think Christian Kirk, James Washington and courtland Sutton will all have flashes early in their careers. Pretty good start for the rookies, could be a crazy year for the hobby. Pat mahomes has two good weeks and 2017 boxes increased by 50%. Personally I plan to rip a case and hold a case, see how it goes. This and select are the only products I personally buy cases of, simply because I do genuinely enjoy the breaks.

Its not the breakers. Its all the collectors turned profiteers who are buying wax and becoming resellers. Collectors no longer bust boxes. Breakers bust cases. Collectors are now buying wax and playing futures with them that is driving the prices up.

Just look at the FOTL threads. Its filled with people specifically buy FOTL boxes/cases to resell. Not to bust. But to resell for profits.

it hasn't come out yet. The hobby product doesn't release for another month. plan on mid next month for a FOTL release. Everyone has jokes...

as to the actual post...this was 199 for a minute there...Panini is mixing it up this year and RCs this year will have both base versions and "silver prizm" versions...i believe that is what is driving this prices. its ridiculous to be honest. I cannot believe what is going on with this hobby in regards to products like NT, Prizm, Heritage, Bowman, ect...it has gotten out of control...everyone is price gouging and BO is def not the only one cashing in.

16 and 17 were both “jumbo” only. 14 and 15 had the two types of hobby boxes if my memory serves me correctly.

Seems like there are a number of guys with deep pockets buying up boxes and cases of the better products like Prizm and hoarding them to drive prices up, like one of ones has done to gold vinyls and finites for Prizm. I remember a period of time where products didn't skyrocket in value until a decade or so after their release (like 00 for Brady RCs and 05 for Rodgers), and even 2014 Prizm dropped like a stone a few months after release, and that's with the hype that Beckham, Carr, Bridgewater, and Bortles had! That ended up going up because of the Jimmy G train, but that was almost 4 years later. If this is the trend that's going to be happening with this stuff, I'm glad I've basically culled everything but 14 Prizm out of my collecting budget.

True, Panini mixing it up and making it like they did with basketball (which was beyond huge and successful) but the price gouging can not be blamed on them, right? I mean we know what is in it and could have had it 25% cheaper if we bought 3 or 4 weeks ago, so how does that fall back on Panini?

Oh no no no no...this is not Panini's fault one bit. Direct pricing is roughly $90. At no point will I ever blame the manufactuer for price gouging. The blame/gouging, as has been discussed into oblivion... falls on all those after the manufacturing process..

If it was $150 maybe. But at $190 this is a hard pass. If you're talking upwards of $200+ per box at release, that's just ridiculous to me. I'll bet FOTL goes to absurd levels, $300 is not out of the question.

Darnold--values are already in the toilet after two poor games.
The others: either on teams with poor followings or "secondary positions" (not a QB)

I don't think this is a fair assessment at all.

Darnold has had 2 poor games yes, but just as much fault is on the supporting cast/offensive line/game plan as it is him, maybe more. A lot of fans still trust this guy is going to be the real deal. There is still a lot of excitement about him.

Mayfield is going to see a big uptick after coming in to save the day and being announced starter.

Allen played a great game, Rosen was named starter.

Ridley has popped off and he should see an uptick. RBs are tough, but out fo the gate they sell well. Barkley will still do fine at release. Collectors will be all over it.

Is it a gamble for those holding? Absolutely. Short term? I don't see one at all if you got in at 150 or lower. I do a case of this stuff every year, and I was going to pass if i didn't find a price that averaged about $150 a box because the gamble isn't worth it at that point.

I'm glad I was able to. 2 cases coming, plus hopefully some FOTL as well.

The thing is, as mahomes has shown, these guys don’t all need to be great. Just one of them. As there are 4, with action Jackson waiting in the wings, I like the possibilities. Don’t expect rookies to be cutting down the nets so to speak right out the gate but if one or two hack it, then we are good. 2017 isn’t the only example. Take 2016, even with dak and Zeke fading, people are going in on goff and Wentz. Box prices there getting crazy as well.

I'm hardly one to predict things, but football is basically turning into a one-headed monster, and that monster is the QB.


Realistically, Mayfield has a big opportunity to turn around a franchise that has suffered for years. He could be a beast.

The other guys? Not so much. Saquon is a monster, but look at Kamara. He has been fantastic since last year. His values? Meh. And receivers? don't even get me started. Julio/Beckham, etc... burn bright for a week or two and are quickly forgotten.


I hope I'm wrong on Darnold but he just doesn't look promising. He just looks scared out there.
