View Full Version : The Preseason Player Hype Thread

One of my favorite things to talk about is who will be the breakout players and who will get a chance in the upcoming year!
We can use this thread to talk about what we see in the preseason. Which players look like they can be stars, make rosters or surprise us in some way.
So far I haven't watched any games but it looks like Miles Bridges had a sick start. I saw Simmons had 14 assists. Other solid lines were Juan Hernangomez, Zach Lavine, Antonio Blakeney.
Some vets came to play like Bobby Portis and Hassan Whiteside.
My boy Monk dropped 13 coming off an injury;)
Add your own observations!

Pascal Siakam.
20 Min - 6pts - 3ast - 13rbs
His shooting was off. But he was giving portland fits with his ball handling and pushing it up the floor.

Dejounte bulked up over the summer. I think Pop is turning this team over to him. He's not going to score 20ppg but he's an incredible defender and is emerging as the leader of the Spurs.
Luka my boy was exactly what I expected. Very solid play, nothing super flashy but looked very poised out there. Not expecting anything different when the play the sixers Friday.
Really excited to see Jon Isaac play tonight
SGA carried over some really nice play from the summer league into the 1st preseason game yesterday. Would be surprised if he isn't starting by mid season and Bev is traded.
I'll stop now but I could go all day. Have never been this excited for an NBA season before

I love his attitude on the court, very deep squad you guys have

If you watch college or Summer league highlights of him, he looks almost like he's playing in slow motion. Not in a Kyle Anderson way, but just like he glides and scores with ease. They actually have a weird log jam at the guard position especially if they wanna rebuild. Monk, Bridges and Bacon need some SG minutes and they have Kemba at the 1 and Batum/Lamb getting 2/3 minutes.

I agree about Kuzma. He looks the same to me; eager on both sides of the ball, but still doesn’t look like he has the upper hand. He almost looks like he is playing catch-up. I’m not super encouraged. Ingram is gonna have a great year, assuming he stays on the court with that narrow frame.

Kuzma is insanely overrated based on the equivalent of 2 months of basketball. He's pretty clearly the odd man out this year IMO and will almost certainly regress.

Playing time is going to be the key. Doncic should lead the way. Knox seems to be secured minutes especially with Lance Thomas starting over Hezonja in preseason game one. Ayton should get minutes but the Suns are a mess at PG and the NBA is moving away from a big mans league. I am concerned with Tatum and Kuzma. There are just not enough balls to go around to secure the stats to keep these cards at these prices.

Not sure how Kuzma's situation will pan out, but I expected a bigger drop when LeBron went to LA. Not sure how Kuzma is possibly going to put up big numbers consistently with LeBron there.
It's just beating a dead horse on Tatums prices right now. There's no way to win in the short-term at these prices, but people that think he could be the next Kobe are looking at long-term hold anyways. I may buy back in around Christmas if he's averaging 12 ppg.

I feel bad for Kings fans. Their FO has assembled the worst possible mix of guys considering the draft capital they've had over the last few years. I don't think they could have picked a worse fit than Bagley.
Did anyone else see that Joerger ran a lineup of: WCS, Giles, Bagley, Skal, Mason yesterday? Wtf is that? Skal was playing the 2 btw lol. It led to 2 fouls and 2 turnovers if anyone was wondering

Wiggins has all of the tools, but apparently none of the motivation. He also has an albatross of a contract. Terribly inefficient player. The smart move for MIN would be to trade him and get some players that don't take shots away from KAT. Alas, the Wolves are circling the drain this year and I expect the Thibs experiment to go boom. Maybe if they package Wiggins and Jimmy Butler together in a trade package they can get something good.

the NBA is moving away from a big mans league.
Lol says who?
The only ones moving away from it are the squads without talent at the position.
KAT, Embiid, Jokic, Cousins (when healthy), AD....
Ayton will get plenty of looks and opportunities assuming he stays healthy. Especially since it's a young squad.
He's still my lock for ROY. But apparently everyone else is off him since it's way too easy/obvious of a pick.

Yea, that's the problem. Nobody wants Wiggins. At this point I'm not sure they could trade him for anything at all. Whatever team would be interested in Butler definitely would not want Wiggins.

Still can’t believe we passed on Luka! Giles is looking way better and more NBA ready than Bagley, and Giles has played like 7 games in the last 2 years. Hoping I’m wrong in 5 years about Bagley.

The Kings being bad is good for the Celtics. They have the Kings 1st round pick in 2019 as long as it isn't #1 overall. They acquired the pick when they traded down from the #1 pick with Philadelphia. Philly chose Fultz and Boston picked Tatum.

If I know anything after watching guys evolve over the last 5-10 years it's that you just can't tell this early if 19/20 y/o kids are the real deal.
Ayton could end up injury prone, he could get exposed against guys like Drummond and Embiid and Jordan who are bigger than him. He could get bullied by a guy like Baynes or Gasol. Maybe he could score 18 but give up 22 due to bad pick and roll defense. Maybe he has weak help side D.
Flip it, and maybe Bagley develops are great PnR game with Fox. Maybe he plays a great high low game with Giles. Maybe his solid shot becomes more lethal as the season goes on.
I do not see Ayton as a lock superstar and I see Bagley much differently than a WCS rim runner. But it may take 2 more seasons to even know who is right here.

I agree that you can't pigeon hole young guys. But I think what WCS has over the other Sac bigs is D. I don't think any of them really touch that aspect of his game.

I mean he's raw. But he has a motor and in this NBA that is as big a deal as anything.
That bum Andre Bynum was from my hometown and he from all accounts locally was just a huge guy who sucked. But then he got to work with Kareem Abdul Jabbar and NBA level trainers and he had a few great years. So Bagley who actually cares about basketball could really develop since he seems driven and will have some pros around him. Zach Randolph should help with the shot.

I think it looks weaker than the past two. You have Little, Barrett, Zion(but he needs to prove he can score from the outside) and Bol Bol. Potentially you have Reddish and Langford who could jump into the top 5. The problem is theres no PG's or C's, they're almost all 2's and 3's.

We call it tall poppy syndrome in Australia. A way of bringing down the top dogs when they're being talked about highly too often.
I do it with LeBron. A bunch did/do it with Simmons.
Ayton has clearly been the most impressive Rookie out the gate. He didn't go against some scrub. He's shown he can shoot and defend the paint. Great start for him.
Yes he'll struggle agains the best Cs at times this season, but he looks great, and imagine when he and Booker have it going.

Yea... he's still the same player. Put up a very Wiggins-like line again last saturday and looks to have not improved anything at all over this summer.
Yeah because everyone knows pre season means anything. That's like me wanting a parade because the Wolves beat the Warriors in the game.

Looks like these are some of the top box scores for tonight not including the LA/Denver game:
Willy Hernangomez 16 and 10 6-7 from the field
Also in that game a lot of people played well including Bacon, Monk and again Miles Bridges. For the Heat Hassan Whiteside had a big double double 14 and 15 with 2 blks.
Collin Sexton had 15 for the Cavs who were led by LOve with 17 and a nice game for Cedi Osman 11, 7, 4.
Rockets played heavy minutes from the vets and CP3, Harden and Melo all played well.
Carter-Williams had 19. Jaren Jackson was the real surprise 6-6 15, 3, 3. Conley, KYle Anderson and Parsons played well as well.
J. Ingles had 24 for the Jazz. Mitchell, Rubio and Gobert were good too. JV and Kawhi led the Raptors.

Watched this game.
Really for the Jazz Ingles couldn't miss and Rubio looked smooth. Grayson Allen looked good offensively - but he's going to be eaten alive on D.
For the Raptors. We got to see the actual rotation in the second quarter and wow i'm excited. Kawhi looked like Kawhi. JV was a bully. And Siakam beats everyone down the court.

Fox and Giles and on the other side Ingram, Kuz and HartBagley put together a nice line. Really became the focal point once the starters were done. I'm starting to see him as an energy pts guy off the bench where he can get a lot of touches. Not what I expected from a No. 2 pick but it seems like his best role right now.
And Giles stop fouling everyone! That one hand quicky dime to Willie was a thing of beauty though. Stats are all whacky this game, saw at least 4 assists from him tonight. The ball really runs through him quite a bit on offense.

He has all the tools to be a superstar for the next generation, and I think Lebron will only help him get there. It's easy to get caught up in the 'too skiinny/too slow' argument, but when you actually watch him play, he is very similar to Durant in that his length is so tough to guard. If he gets that outside jumper down with consistency, the only one who can stop him is himself.

Harry’s had quite the introduction to the NBA, going up against Lebron then KD on back-to-back nights. Struggled early on but I love how he kept his head up. At one point he missed 4 straight and got taken out, was headed to the bench a little slumped and I saw ZBo pumping him up and telling him to shake it off. Came back in, threw down a monster dunk, then hit a corner three, then a swooping left handed hook to finish off the game. Man he could be starting by opening night!
I’m a homer, though, who PCs him so here’s some objectivity:

I'm well aware of my perpetual optimism when it comes to the Magic.......but Mo Bamba is absolutely insane. Watching him effortlessly block shots is a lot of fun. He blocked 4 in 16 minutes last night. He's also 4-4 from long range so far this preseason  Him and Isaac (who's grown to over 7ft since he was drafted) are going to be hell on defense for opponents. That combo will be deadly at some point (offense and defense).

-John Wall coming to play with 32 and 9
-Mike Conley healthy with 24
-Jonathan Isaac with 15 and 8 in 17 min

Yeah that was a nice start for him! I agree the Magic should trade Vuc but it would be nice to see Mamba put some weight on. I was watching the Magic vs. Charlotte game and Bamba couldn’t even back down one of their 6’ guards, it was really surprising

I think Rondo will start for awhile, but Zo will play a ton of minutes and will eventually start. I love what I've seen out of Rondo running the offense this preseason, but this is a different team defensively with Zo. His ability to anticipate and read on help defense is uncanny, and his increased bulk should help him on ball too. I loved seeing him body that one cat on a lay up. Last season he would of tried to finesse it and it would of been swatted into the 3rd row. Lol

Good question. Their plus/minus with starters on the court against other teams starters has actually been really bad. Sure, they destroyed Sac and the Australian teams, but the starters on the raptors and blazers totally worked them. Lillard was a plus 20 but basically didn’t play in the second half.
So, the good news is that the jazz’s starters and bench have destroyed other team’s bench units.....the bad news is that the only nba starting 5 they played well against is Sacramento.
