View Full Version : Regrets.... I've had a few

So seemingly everyone has a couple stories of the cards that got away. The ones they had to sell during a tough time, to raise money for a once in a lifetime vacation, to just plain raise funds to buy something that isn't cardboard (which is a waste, obviously!). The cards they saw at The National but balked at the asking price, only to never see the card surface again as it doubled, tripled, quadrupled in value.

But what I never see are stories about cards that people had the opportunity to sell or trade at their hobby peak, but didn't. I'm talking Linsanity, high end Derrick Rose stuff during his MVP season, that sort of hobby fall from grace. This thread might hurt... but let's share some pain.

What cards do you still have kicking around your collection that would've brought a small fortune if you would've just magically found their hobby peak, and what kept you hanging on? I'd love to hear stories about hobby bubbles, what you think might have caused them, or even what bubbles you anticipate bursting in the near future?

Dont make me post the Currys I used to own... please dont...

I thought this might be a thread where we can work out some stuff together, as a community. This is a safe thread.

And anyway - I figure stories of cards that cratered in value that we kept around as a constant reminder of the randomness of our hobby might be even more painful than the ones we've moved. Maybe not though.

I once had Shaun Livingston and Sebastian Telfair collections.

Generally speaking, going hard on rookies is usually a bad move. For every LeBron, there's 100 guys that don't pan out. Unless they become superstars, most are generally forgotten from a hobby standpoint.

I had some super nice Brandon Roy cards, rookie exclusives, chirography, had many offers for them but kept them. I think you can all guess they're still with me now

I was known for getting hits from packs so my friend asked me to pick a pack of sweet shot for him. That pack yielded a Jordan/LeBron dual gold jersey /23. He also ended up stealing my Tim Duncan Bowman elevation triple patch /3 when I slept over his place. Brought my cards over and they were all still there in the morning except for that one (he was a huge Duncan fan and wouldn't let me search for it lol)

Traded a Jordan auto for an Adam Morrison gold refractor auto when everyone was convinced he'd be the next big thing

Also traded a Mickey Mantle auto for a bunch of nothing since I was somehow convinced that quality

To be somewhat fair it wasn't a regular Jordan auto. It was from a commemorative set and the go for about 1k on eBay. Still a huge hit but at least it wasn't a regular Jordan auto since those go for 3k+

I'm a big Celtics fan and I enjoy grabbing popular rookies of players who play for the C's. Prior to Tatum this was a relatively easy endeavor. During the 2012-14 years of players being traded to Boston I was big on grabbing key rookies for any of the vets that joined the team. This included IT4. The day he got traded I grabbed an Immaculate Acetate RPA and a few others for pennies. A few months later I grabbed a Prizm Gold RC.

I was never a big fan of IT4 as a long term solution for Boston. I respected what he did, but didn't want him to sign long term. This lack of emotional connection to him made it easy to move some cards. I sold the Immaculate for a large profit to the27guy, but I literally sold it 5 days too early. Had I waited I could have sold it for close to $1000. I did move the Prizm Gold at the height of insanity and made some good money moving lower end stuff through COMC.

i can't say i've had any major disasters. i guess the worst was in baseball with a jorge mateo red but as much as i lost on it (1k+) i made plenty during the same time with other similar player profiles.

i have however left thousands on the table by selling like a month too early. Blake Griffin NT RPA /5, /25, Mike Trout BC Auto Refractor /500, etc. But thankfully these were profitable cards that could've been way more profitable.

The one really stupid pass I had was on an Aaron Judge Purple BC Auto Ref /10 at $1400 which at some point last year had to be close to 10k. What can I say, I got splummed! I should've Max'd and it led to getting daigel'd!

Dude you need to look into moissanite. You'll thank me later.

When De Beers launches their synthetic diamond factory, moissanite will definitely take a backseat...almost immediately. Synthetic diamonds will be priced a lot closer to moissanite as De Beers will make a move to choke out the rest of the synthetic manufacturers.

That said, never overlook gemstones...something like a rose gold and morganite ring.

$336.01 is my biggest regret. That's how much I sold the 2008-09 UD Premier Russell Westbrook RC Jersey Auto #1/1 that I pulled on eBay back in March of 2009. Any guesstimates as to what that card would be now?

To be fair, the box also had this card in it, so I was happy to have the $300 plus and the Jordan auto. Probably the third best box I ever opened.

Sold a Goff rc auto /5 from origins for like $125 during his rc season made a good return since it was a group break. Sold a LT contenders for $225 before he went to the hof they sell for around 4-500 now, I did use half of the $ and bought a LT contenders parallel rc auto for $125 with the $, it was bgs 9/9 and I still have a bgs 9/10 contenders. Got a promo pack and pulled some soccer dude /5 sold it for only $60 and could of got $150 or more for it but didn't research it like I should of. Not too bad but still stung a bit. Wish I bought some Bree's rc autos years ago is my biggest regret to date.

Wow. I'd love to hear about those other two boxes if you don't mind sharing.

Second biggest box - When 2007-08 UD Black hit I opened three or four boxes. Two hits a box for $200-$250 at the time. Typical UD collation to the case that most of the boxes were coming out of from my LCS; some were lackluster, most were middle of the road, one was insane. The last box of the product I opened had a redemption for this, which arrived a couple of weeks later -

http://i.imgur.com/0h59l78.jpg?1 (https://imgur.com/0h59l78)

I still need to take a better photograph of it.

Numero Uno - My biggest was another redemption from UD. A buddy gifted me a box of 2008-09 Exquisite when it came out as thanks for some work I helped him out with. While the box wasn't very strong, it was a great gesture. I'm not 100 percent certain if I'm remembering the retail for it at the time, but I want to say they were anywhere from $350.00 up. That said, I'd watched enough Exquisite breaks on YouTube to know that there was always one of the boxes in a case that had a great hit. I took a chance and grabbed one of the two boxes from the cases and hit this monster.

See, that's how bad I've tried to forget it. Thanks for the correction. I know the fins were concerned about Brees' recovery but I just didn't understand why they thought Culpepper was worth the money at the time. His receivers and running game on the Vikings really helped him out. Anyway, thanks for the correction and now back to basketball.

I busted one box of 09-10 SP Game Used a few years ago, like 2012 or 2013. The very last card of the very last pack was an MJ jersey card /23. Was so stoked about that that everything else was an afterthought...

like the Curry Rc /399 that I sold a few weeks later for around $20. A year or two later it was selling raw for $350+. I realize $350 isn't a ton of money, but the card was selling for literally around 20x more than when I sold it lol. Ugh.

I think it is. Over the years I've tried various combinations of his stats and I haven't found a 1337. For example, adding games played in college, NBA regular season, NBA playoffs, and olympic career doesn't equal 1337, or any combo of those. l33t is the only easy answer that I've found, which always makes me chuckle.

I'd much rather be on the early end of the stick than the late end.

To put it in context, if I would have held a bit too long on the extensive D Rose, Blake Griffin, and Jeremy Lin investments...I'd probably be typing this using Starbucks wi-fi.....from the parking lot.

Sure, there's always a chance you miss out on the Giannis,' Anthony Davis,' etc. But for each one of those guys there's a hundred John Walls, Damian Lillards, Hassan Whitesides, Paul Georges, Chris Pauls, and Andrew Wiggins.'
All of whom are all-star level talents but did not sustain hobby momentum.

I think using two colors for the jersey on that one was not coincidental. It was meant to separate two numbers, 13 and 37. Both numbers signifying Jordan pre-Wizards; hist first 13 seasons and first 37 years.

3. 1979/80 OPC Hockey wax box for $10k in 2007, I wanted to pick it up in person in NY. I never followed thru.

What does 1337 mean on that MJ?

13 seasons with Bulls, 37 when he came back?

Almost everyone has missed the point of this thread. Which is ok because it’s brought out a lot of sad stories and pictures of great cards.

But the point of the op was NOT what cards you’ve sold too soon but what cards you’ve held on to that you should have sold. Extra points for the few souls who read the whole op and comprehended it. As for me I’m sure I have some Harold Miner rcs I could have sold at the baby Jordan peak.

OP.....

At first I read this as "Regrets.... I've had a few", meaning you've had a few regrets.

Now, a few Jameson's down on a Friday night, I read it is "Regrets.... I've had a few", as in: You've had a few drinks and now you're looking at your past collecting mistakes and drowning your sorrows.

So:

A. Which one is it?

and

B. My regrets......I spent my money Cleveland players from age 7 until college. All the rookies, many of the key cards. But.....

College happened to be right when the Cavs drafted a guy named LeBron James and I didn't have a single card or auto of him for about 6 years into his career. But instead I spent my time, money and attention on partying and college chicks......

I REGRET NOTHING!

Back in 2010, I PC Stephen Curry and Tyreke Evans at the same time. About one year after, I sold my entire Stephen Curry PC (NT RPAs, RC autos, relics, TC RCs...), and kept buying Tyreke Evans. Here is PART of my T.Evans PC now. (Have more high-end ones not pictured) https://www.flickr.com/photos/156807234@N03/albums/72157698883163582/with/43315574680/

I appreciate you. I figure it's fine to just let everyone let it out, but yeah you nailed it.

haha, neither for me man! It's a line from a verse in "My Way" made most famous by Frank Sinatra. I don't drink and definitely haven't been in the hobby long enough to have any real stories of catastrophe. Look me up in 18 months like theluckyshow said though when my Frank Ntilikina cards are worth nickles.

Yea. Youre right lol. Were use to the sold to soon threads.

Mines in baseball. I had 25 lot of GEM BGS 9.5 BC Liriano rookies that ended the night he blew his arm out and winning bidder didn't pay. Went from $150 a pop..to pennies on the dollars.

There are so many cards that I have that peaked years ago and are less than 20% of the highs. Mostly Bulls PC stuff that I still enjoy looking at, though, so I don't mind it too much.

For non PC guys, I guess I would say Johnny Flynn, Javaris Crittenton, and Glen Davis. I could have gotten something for them all at one point, now, not so much.

Buying this for $275 when it first came out. Than selling it for $3xx when he left for Miami. One of my many regrets but certainly the biggest.

Yeah, $300+. Not $3k. This was in like 2010 or something. Remember all those chronology canvas auto were pretty attainable. Used to see MJ @ $500-$800. I feel dumb but not as bad as those MJ sellers.

Back in 2011 there was a guy i collected for a few years that i actually knew in person threw a mutual friend. always liked his game in college when i met him and when he got drafted i was hyped cause i knew him so i collected the hell out of his cards. as years went by i had so many of his rookies and rc autos i had multiples of a lot of his rare high end cards.

so i had a bunch of doubles listed on ebay with very high buy it nows knowing know one would by them for months.

then one night im at work and literally all of my cards listed had sold for the full buy it now prices like insane amounts!! im talking cards that i paid $2 just months before for selling for $40-$50.

i didint know why and while i was at work i did some quick google work and seen he had just been traded to the lakers to be their new starting pg.

so later that night when i got home i listed alot more cards and they were selling almost instantly for the 1st week i was listing them. some as high as $400 that i paid like $30 for.

needless to say the guy was Ramon Sessions and is still active in the nba. always has been a real good player just never truly broke out but always good.

i pondered and said man i should hold a bunch of his rookie autos and stuff for the playoffs and off load the rest then!

playoffs happened and he did nothing much and the cards literally decreased by 50% in like a week. then i said ok ill hold them til next year when he gets a full season to play for them and make a killing! well.... they then traded him before the season started and yeahhhh i still have some of his cards lol.

if i would have sold them all when he got traded and the 1st 2 weeks he was there i would have made thousands. still could have made over $1000 even after the playoffs and then when they traded him it went to could have made $100s to now i couldnt get $100 total for all i have lol.

I had 5 topps chrome LBJ RC's (4 raw and a 9.5), I sold the raw ones for about $100 each and the 9.5 for $175. Also sold his Finest RC /999 for $105. This was a long time ago but considering today thats about $2500 in cards and only sold em for $700, that's pretty bad.

If anyone is familiar with Hockey, I sold a Crosby SP Authentic RC for around $400. It's well over 1k now.

Wanna see a regret. Go check out the Hockey forums and read the e-pack thread.

I'll give the short version because I didn't wanna go in the Hockey forums either. Spent 10k on e-packs and best pull was this?

2017 Ultimate Collection Future Legacy Signatures #FLS-BB Brock Boeser Auto Card (https://bit.ly/2C2dFBf)

I don't know anything about Hockey ,but i'm pretty familiar with money. Regret of 2018 contender.
