I watch Embiid on a regular basis... dude can play, like, for real. I don’t know if he’s MVP, but he’s up there. Unstoppable on offense and can lock down all 5 positions on defense.

Man everyone's in love with Embiid this year for MVP. Why?! How did Embiid and the 76ers do his "rookie" year without Simmons? What did the 76ers do when Embiid went down last year? Ben Simmons might not be able to shoot, but he creates pace, finds the open man, doesn't take too many bad shots, defends, and just plays winning basketball. Without Simmons, Embiid and the 76ers would be mediocre.
Ok, my top 3 for MVP so far:
1) Giannis - the signature win against a healthy GSW seals it for me
2) Kemba - no love but so deserving
3) Steph - his injury actually helps make this case because of how poor GSW looks right now

My point is that Ben Simmons is a bigger part of the winning formula than Joel Embiid. The 76ers rattled off ten straight wins when Embiid went down at the end of last year. 10 straight! Maybe I'm focusing a bit too much on that in my own head but how do you rattle off 10 wins in a row without your MVP? I get he's having a great season and he's putting up gaudy numbers but I also watched a lot of that with DeMarcus Cousins when he was a King.

1. Embiid - Big numbers while locking down the other team's big.. AD had how many points today? And Whiteside, Drummond?
2. Giannis - Could easily be #1 too but leaning toward Embiid for his dominance.
3. LeBron - True MVP always.. simply the most valuable player!
Steph not playing, and KD is not carrying the team. Kemba seems to lack the IT factor, whatever it is. Still too early to give real MVP consideration to Marc and the Grizzlies.

Giannis for me is the clear no. 1.
Kemba has dragged a team of absolute scrubs to a respectable record. Dude has been crazy.
AD has dominated either side of his injury.
Embiid!!!

But if Steph didn't go down he would be my favorite.

Could be. I don't really take much issue with Lebron not winning more MVP's.
There was a lot more parity in talent back when Jordan was playing. A pretty large gap between him and most of his peers.
These days the lines have really blurred, especially with all these new positionless stretch players.
It means higher utilization and bigger numbers in more categories. Almost all the top guys are a triple double threat any given night.

I don’t have him on my list because I don’t think he’s a top 5 guy so far. How many years he’s played is irrelevant in terms of this years MVP. He still blows me away. I’m definitely impressed with him. But he’s not higher than 7 or 8 so far.
Having said that, we’ve got about 80% of the season to play... and he could still get in the conversation and even win it. But the reason he’s in it now has more to do with who he is than what he’s actually accomplished this season.

Embiid has gone to another level.Ben Simmons is the exact same player he was last season. Critics have been harsh on him this season because he hasn't expanded his game offensively but lets not frown at 15.3pts 9.2reb 7.7asts 1.3stla .7blks. Let's also not forget how bad this team was before Simmons stepped on the court for the 76ers. They were 28-54 in 16-17 even with Embiid (albeit as a rookie) playing 31 games (13-18 when playing).
Embiids numbers are up across the board partly because he's improved but also because he's playing nearly 5 more minutes per game. I'm not downplaying his numbers because 28pts 13reb 3.6asts is nasty, just trying to shed light why they've spiked so much.

He's averaging 29, 8 and 7 on 52% shooting. He had 51 the other night. I'd argue people are actually diminishing his play this season because of what we expect of him.

Just today Simmons had a chance to seal the game, got in to the paint and looked to pass and ended up taking a shot he didn't want to. Sorry but he's lacking there and Embiid isn't.

Arguing that Lebron doesn't deserve it because the Lakers are 7th is silly when the wear is clustered, with the lake show being only 2 games out of the first spot.
Curry is great but you don't win MVP by not playing based on what your team would have done had you played. Otherwise MJ would have won the years he sat out.

The last few seasons it's almost as if the media makes up their mind pretty early on (not lebron again) and dont waiver from it. Two seasons ago the talk was "Can Harden steal the MVP from Westbrook" not even halfway through the season when OKC was barely above .500. Last season the media anointed Harden as the favorite following the Rockets hot start. Hey, some years there are definitely clear-cut MVPs like Steph in 2015 but I think most years it really could go to 2-4 guys. Look at the Cavs this year. Hard to say LBJ didnt deserve MVP last year.

10. Blake Griffin- Putting up big numbers, playing unreal ball. Pistons are only 1 game over .500 but with the way he's playing right now in my opinion that is enough for him to crack the top 10... For now!

Very good point. Don't know how anyone could have lebron first right now considering he's literally one of the worst defenders in the league now. Meanwhile Giannis, Kawhi, and other MVP candidates so far this season play top notch on both sides of the ball. I agree with 27guy. If you took the name away from lebron's stats, people wouldn't have him as their MVP right now. I think more people are impressed that lebron is still this good in his 16th year, which is still impressive, but not MVP worthy when he has completely given up on the other end. Doesn't anyone find it strange that any team he has been on the last 5 years are always horrible defensively? I just don't see how you can credit him for how he is playing offensively in his 16th year, and give him a pass for being one of the worst defensive players because he's in his 16th year.

Kawhi is 60th in defensive win shares and Lebron is 98 (ahead of some that people say are great defenders). Could be better but not near as bad as some make it seem. He’s also got the lakers 2 games outside of the top spot in the west averaging 29/8/7 52% shooting with a per just under 29 (second in the league) and leads the nba in impact rating. Exactly. I'm not just going off of defensive win shares. I'm going off of watching the games. Players like Kawhi and Giannis go against the other teams' best player every night, while lebron now always guards the worst player on the floor for the other team. He was guarding David Nwaba all night last night, which od course means he didn't need to guard him. That is a luxury that only lebron has. He hasn't played defense in 5 years, but he gets a pass since he has played his best offensively the last 2 years. Why are his teams always at the bottom of the league defensively now?
tjforce

LeBron does take some plays off, but he is far from one of the worst defenders in the league.
It's a switch league, and there's a reason you don't see teams force the switch off to LeBron.
Plus you have the chase down blocks, steals, etc.
He's not one of the top few players in the league during the regular season at this point, but calling him one of the worst is foolish.

...you haven't been watching this season then.
Jokic is 9th in Defensive Rating, 6th in Defensive Win Shares, 5th in Defensive BPM, [Harden not listed top 20 in anything].
And he's #1 in VORP and BPM.
Bring some statistics and less bias next time.
Edit- and he doesn't shoot enough because his coach is horrible. He's likely not going to be a Harden-like chucker, he prefers to get his in the flow of the offense, and if the offense isn't working properly, he works to get the best shot, which often means he settles for passing/deferring. A better coach with a better offensive system would do wonders for his PPG

I disagree...
He's impossible to vote for because he's missed 40% of his team's games.
Why he is even in the discussion.
Out of 20 games would you rather have:

I agree with this. It's hard to be the most valauble player when you're on the bench in a suit nearly half the gamesYou guys are right and I'll switch out Curry for Lebron at 3.
I will say his absence has made it pretty clear who the MVP of that team is.

At this point it's going to be hard for Curry to have a chance for MVP at all this year.
Tonight's game is his 10th missed, with a few more to comes.
With his track record of getting nicked up, and probable maintenance days, it'd likely that he'll sit out at least 15-20 games this year. Unless guys like Giannis and LeBron miss serious time, I can't really see a scenario where he wins MVP while missing a quarter of the season.

I think its going to come down to Giannis vs Lebron and the team with the better record wins it. Giannis is putting up monster stats and has sat out at least 4 4th quarters that I know of. He sat out the entire 4th vs the blazers and he was 1 assist away from a triple-double.

NBA values team success so much in the MVP vote ... will be hard for anyone not in the top 4 of each conference to win.
(Westbrook and Harden not even on the chart above / they should be).
I think it's all but guaranteed you'll get one of the following 10 players
Giannis
LeBron
Embiid
Westbrook
Harden
Durant
Kawhi
Irving
Lillard
Jokic
I think as the season progresses, the dust will settle and Giannis or Embiid will win. Going to come from the East this year; we're 25% of the season in and the West has yet to separate itself.

Giannis has standout from the pack in the last couple of weeks averaging 30 point, over 13 rebound and almost 7 assists while shooting 60% from the field. Unless he cools down, the discussion might end up shifting to who should be number 2.

Curry and AD were looking good earlier, but Curry's lack of playing time is going to take him out of the race and the Pels probably won't get the Wins/Seeding to get AD a real shot. [Definitely possible though]

Giannis and Embiid are definitely out in front, and for good reason. They’re straight dominating games, and not just from a singular standpoint. Redick has a career high PPG going for him so far thanks to the work him and Embiid do as a tandem. They’re brilliant together. Embiid is so crafty and has a seemingly unlimited tool set, and Giannis makes it look like he’s playing against middle schoolers.

I don't think AD has a shot. He's already got a bad hip and it's going to keep him out of games down the road. Same w/ Curry and his issues (which is why I left him off). I suppose you should never really count out AD; but he's already down 4 games this year and has never played more than 75 in a season.
Almost positive it comes from the list of 10.

Why is Leonard getting no love? I'd take him over Embiid all day every day, and his team has the best record in the NBA with a new coach.

The West is yet to separate itself because the best team started hot and then lost their MVP and the DPOY. Kind of a big deal.
MIL are 7 and 4 vs the West compared to 8 and 2 vs the East. The massive advantage to the East is still clearly there.
For me it's still Giannis 1, Embiid 2 and I probably have to give Kawhi 3. But that's easily debatable.
