View Full Version : Surprise Inscription cards

I was wondering how many/what cards are out there that have an inscription on them but weren't intended to from the set. Basically a random one off inscription on a card from a set where no other cards from the same set have one. This wouldn't include 1/1's either. Players that often write an inscription with their name wouldn't qualify.
I remember Panini posted an image a while back of a Kuzma Court Kings auto that says "Lonzo says hi". Not sure if it was ever pulled. I also remember someone on this forum posting a Frank Jackson auto where he put some kind of inscription on it and apparently he does that from time to time with different random inscriptions.
The Kuzma was referenced here:

Has anyone else seen anything like this or have examples to show?
Just thought this would be interesting to see.

Only ones I can remember right now:
- Mark Jackson writing "God Bless u" after every auto (at least lately)
- AD using his full signature on 1 of 1s (Adam pointed that one out)

Thanks for the reply.
Yeah, Mark Jackson writes that on most of his autos. I moreso meant random one offs that are only on that exact card, not including 1/1's.

Wrong sport.....but I remember as a kid seeing a 88 Topps Al Leigter rookie card autographed.....and the player signed the card and wrote “that’s not me!” The card was an uncorrected error, with the wrong player depicted on the card.

Not inscriptions, but there are also surprise autograph variations like the very few instances where Penny signs a card "Anfernee" instead of "Penny" or Shaq drawing a star instead of the usual "S" in his signature.

There have been a few rare occasions that Dennis Rodman adds “worm” to his auto. Sometimes it can be hard to see but he signs it between first and last name. Here are two examples.

Weren't those Shaq autos from a few years back in question because they were believed to be signed by someone else? Th ey look like the TTM autographs you get from him that would come back as not authentic by PSA.

Here are a couple of random things that I have seen. Not sure if it’s what you’re looking for, OP.
Penny Hardaway signed all of his eminence gilded graphs with his auto and “penny” - with quote signs and all.
Lebron James signed a few random cards with different inscriptions. Sometimes it seems very random. But the problem with that is bad guys have added inscriptions after the fact on several cards. Tough to figure out which are real sometimes. Alabammaslamma has a sweet UD Black /10 with the “king James” inscription in gold. So pretty. Alanna’s is totally legit as for some reason lebron signed all of the gold cards that way.
As mentioned above, what AD does on all of his 1/1’s, by lengthening his signature from “AD23” to something that approximates “AnthonyD23” is really cool. He only does that on 1/1’s and he does it nearly every time. (Shameless plug for me) - let me know if anyone has a 1/1 AD on card autos that does this. I’m interested in buying! Up to three! :)
But one of the coolest things I’ve seen came from a box of a donruss baseball (elite maybe?) around 2005. Can’t remember the players name, but out of a normal /999 (or something similar) card, the sticker on which the player had signed his name also included a flag with several colors drawn on the sticker. It was just so.... random. We didn’t know who the guy was or why he had drawn his home country’s flag (in multiple colors) but we all thought it was really cool!

Nope, that Shaq is from 2012, prior to the 2013 to 2015 period from when his autos are highly questionable. Other normal autos he signed from that Flawless set look like his known legit autos.

What he said. :)
Can we all agree that Shaq is a giant tool? Having someone fake his autographs for years? Everytime I see one it irritates me.

I have a 2001 Fleer Greats of the Game auto of Charlie Ward where he inscribed both his jersey number (12) and a bible verse (Rom 5:8) don’t believe he always does that.

I have a rc auto of John Collins where he drew hearts around his name. I need to take a pic and post it up. Was kinda weird when I pulled it and was like why are there hearts all around his name, lol. I looked on ebay awhile back and didnt see anymore of them.

Did anyone see the /10 dual signature NASCAR Dale Jr./Danica Patrick card that she forgot to sign...Dale signed the top then signed the bottom with an inscription that read something like “she forgot to sign, Jr.”. For a NASCAR fan that will be a HUGE pull. One of the coolest cards I’ve seen in awhile.

I looked on ebay awhile back and didnt see anymore of them.I remember seeing that card here on a BO thread a while back! My guess is that it was his girlfriend who did it. I was selling a John Collins Optic card on the bay where the title said "HAWK Stud!" Got a message saying "that's my man only I can call him that" or something like that. Just weird if she was telling the truth why she'd be looking for his cards on ebay... unless she was looking for that heart card!
Collins has a couple of other interesting ones (not mine):https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181123/8213d8b06f3ecf85b63492a90ba0b956.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181123/e59bf500c26d7cdd212c80622f1dc328.jpg

Cool thread by the way because I for one hate “mandated” Inscription cards where the player is forced to add one; much cooler when they do it on their own.

I was keeping an eye on this one on Ebay and it sold for ~$600.00 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/2017-18-Panini-Absolute-Memorabilia-Rookie-auto-Donovan-Mitchell-21-99-Beckett-9-/142925416537?nordt=true&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.m43663.l10137). I however remember saw this same exact same card on Ebay ungraded couple months prior and that prior time it sold for ~$160 raw. I would have bought prior time but the only reason I didn't buy it at that time was because I just had bought one of these same Absolute Donovan Mitchell cards (but without any special inscription on it) like 2 days prior before I saw this one on Ebay
