do you think these are worth $120+ a box?
do you think it will be tough at current prices to make a decent profit unless you hit a monster?
look forward to seeing the rest of your break and hearing your thoughts.
thanks,
Andrew

I haven't opened any yet, but here are my thoughts at the current price point.
You will have a very very hard time profiting or even breaking even at the current price. Barring you hitting something huge.
As most know, the hits in T1/2/U&H are not the real moneymakers as most of the autos and gu'ed sell for less than $10. The money comes from the master sets, base sets, extra insert sets, and original backs. The new wrapper redemption and diamond card giveaway cards will also be a big help in increasing profits.
At $120 a box (jumbos $720/case) the usual money makers will not get you close to your case price back. The sets will help, but unless this stuff was severely short printed and master sets are hard to come by, the value of them are not going to be nearly enough to dig into your investment.
Your best shot at profiting on this is to have locked in at $70-75 a box ($450->$500/case). The current price is almost double what you should be getting in on this at.
So basically, barring hitting a cut, a few low numbered autos, or a few of the high $$ leather cards, you are going to be hard pressed to break even, much less profit.
(All of my analysis is based on HTA boxes/cases. Hobby is going to be similar but with more sets and inserts)

getting ready to go..making a few scans quick
Wilson, I am with Pat. At current prices, without a big hit(s), no way you can plan on profiting..You would have to do really good to break even

With the reported cuts to Gold card odds and SP odds, I don't think you can count on the value of the cards from an AVERAGE case of Topps to be more than $600 for Jumbo and $750 for Hobby.
So at the current price points, I would not recommend buying to 'rip and flip'. Although, I wouldn't say the current prices of series one are any worse in terms of average resale value than most other products. You're lucky to get 80% of your money back or break even with most products. Topps is usually the exception to that rule, but at the current prices, there's no real advantage to opening Topps vs any other random product out there. Either try to find it cheaper at a LCS, wait for distributors to get the rest of their product that Topps is holding back, or just skip it altogether.

how are the cards holding up in the packs? last case i got of 2010 Jumbo had a lot of dinged corners as a result of the 50 cards being crammed into each pack. any issues yet?

"Wow the leather cards look like $hit (the stitching is horrible )"
completely agree with this, they are awful.
much worse than the Topps Update Manufactured barrels (which i originally thought looked bad, but now i kind of like)
no way this product is staying at current price levels for long (i give it a week before they drop significantly)

SSP??? Look at the ball, and the card was out of the normal order in the pack. Backs of the cards are exactly the same

at least your getting some value out of the boxes...
all the Leather "names" will get at least $10-$15a piece out of the gate..
and the parallel "names" seem to be good..get that Strasburg diamond up ASAP..first 1 went for $40
as far as the SSP looks interesting..took a good eye im guessing..is it just me or is it maybe just the light on the scanner, but does the text and borders at the bottom apear to be gray as well...or like i said is that just something off a little

No way the SP is from the scanner. The pattern on the shine is to obvious. Wonder if its some type of diamond in the ball signifying the anniversary.

Well finally some people are seeing the light here. I told everyone to wait until the price dropped. They did the same dam thing last year.
This is going to hit the floor like a brick pretty soon. My money is sitting in Paypal until I can get it at the price that it's meant to be at.
Good luck OP I hope you fare well and hit something big to make some money back.

what is the problem @ that price..id be all over that in a heartbeat...considering current Jumbo prices are around $115-$130 and thats online
you figure almost 1 base set per box (possibly full set)- $12
10 diamond giveaways-$12
wrapper redemption-$6
1 gu+1 Auto- $7
1 leather- $10
so theres about half your money back right there with the potential for more...not including the parallels, inserts etc

Oh trust me, I've been of this belief and practice for a long time. I would buy this stuff all day long at >$500 a jumbo case. Have done it every year and made a killing every year. This year will be the first that I haven't opened T1 in quantity due to financial reasons. But if you could have locked in early and at the right price, there is a ton of $$ to be made on this years T1. The wrappers and diamond giveaway cards will probably recoup half of the case cost and you should be able to get the other half with sets alone. All of the SP's, hits, parallels, and loose inserts should all be gravy on the top. I would say easy $100-200 profit if you were able to get in on multiple cases at around $450.

sorry maybe my post was little confusing..i was talking about the shading at the bottom of the "SSP"..it looks to be a lighter color, almost a gray as compared to the other card..didnt know if that was also a way to tell the difference or if THAT was due to his scanner or something...
wasnt saying the sparkle behind the ball was..sorry

Im hoping it doesn't take forever to drop. I didnt have the funds before the jump, but I anticipate that I will in about a week or two so Im banking on the price being lower. I saw the thread about the wrapper redemption and people started going nuts, and I was laughing because I know it wont hold. Its already getting hammered for looks and such. I like the look overall, but wanna have a decent shot at profit.

I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you on this falling back to a price point where I would buy to rip and flip. Jumbos will dip back down, but don't expect them to fall below $600. Look at every years Topps 1. The come out low, jump to around $650, and settle just lower than that until they are slowly gone. 2008 is about the only exception, its garbage. Basically, I think if you didn't get in real early on this and want to rip and flip, you missed the boat. Wait for T2 and buy in on that.

Sage advice. I may just buy some boxes for pure enjoyment then and wait until Bowman comes out or S2. I just have a funny feeling that it will tank badly, but im guessing so I hope im right, but your research will most likely beat my gut lol.

It is unlikely the S1 will drop to a point where it becomes profitable to rip and flip again. Generally S1 you can buy in up to $525/jumbo and still turn good numbers. The margin for S2 is a little less because it tends to be weaker.
By the way.....nice break!

My dilemma is that I got in early enough to get a jumbo for 77 bucks after shipping on eBay. Since I consider myself an unlucky person, I'm probably better off selling the box for 117 and making 40 bucks. But I'll rip it and be lucky to get 40-50 in value.
BTW, the diamond sparkle is definitely a variation...I'd guess the Chapman would have the most value early.
