Didn't he turn down $14M from the Steelers last season?

I think that was for the franchise tag.

Doesn't seem to be much of a gain, the guaranteed money really only amounts to a little more than double what he would have got for the tag and he lost a paying year and a peak year. You have to also wonder what he lost in ability by not playing last year.

I thought he would be lucky to get 10 million a year. He clearly wanted to go to a team that had a good OL with the way he talked up the Colts. The Jets had to overpay because of their bad OL.

There a much greater chance he would have been hurt last year, over him having lost a step.

Plus, the franchise tag is a screw the player move. Can't blame someone for not wanting to be screwed....multiple years.

Steelers need to cut their GM and Player Relations guys.

This isn’t a trolling question either, just curious. Does anyone ever think Ben might be an issue? I read the GM saying all the other players are like Ben’s kids. I could see that thinking make a lot of players unhappy

I won’t pretend to know football the way I know baseball, but doesn’t Brown get most of a defense’s focus leading to a guy like Juju getting a lot more looks?

He also turned down 3 years at 16 million per to miss one year's salary and sign for 13 milliom per. Dumb move by Bell and now he is the Jets problem. Just hope he doesn't violate the league's drug policy again and get suspended for a year.

Yeah oddly I have seen a few of our fans so far still magically thinking we will be having an easy division win and a 12-4 record despite being objectively worse than last year as we sit here today and we went 9-7 last year.

We did add Steven Nelson to solve our starting CB problem on the surface, but how good is he? I know very little about him. Still major needs at ILB, WR now to replace AB, and we need a new TE as well.

Lot of questions coming for the Steelers this weekend.

A few things here:

1. Ben shares some of the blame for sure. I think he too readily calls out players in public and should just keep his mouth shut and stay off of the radio. With that being said, Ben genuinely cares about his teammates, particularly his offensive line. If we are looking at the Antonio Brown thing specifically, that was just all about money and Brown sounds like he is losing his mind. His criticisms were all over the place and he contradicted himself plenty.

2. The Bens kids thing was completely overblown by the national media and only idiots like Antonio Brown and the national media didn't understand what it meant. Go back and watch years of draft analysts and what not and they basically call everyone kids. You can be 24 in the NFL (objectively very much an adult) and you will hear a guy like Chris Collinsworth say "now here's a kid who is running great routes" or something along those lines. Colbert was essentially doing the same thing. Ben is the oldest guy on the team and the only one who has won a Super Bowl. It was a comment about Ben being the leader and/or guide of the team. Steer them in the right direction and show them the type of work they need to put in to be champs. It wasn't about team maturity or anything insulting.

WR's are very hit or miss for the impact they can have in year 1. For example JuJu had a pretty good rookie season but also benefited from AB. Washington on the other hand, despite have JuJu AND AB, didn't do much of anything. So I think even if the Steelers draft a round 1 receiver we can't assume this offense doesn't take a big step back.

RB is a different animal to replace because so much of that has to OL and that sort of thing.

I still hope they can pull a Chris Conley in or some such.

How many Super Bowl rings did that pair help the Steelers get?? That would be a big round number, 0. How many before both of them, recently? Two, yep, so sad lol. Haters always gonna hate. Just wait till the games are played. Sadly, for teams like the Brownies, the games aren't played on paper. Come talk to Steeler Nation when the Browns have done one of the following:

a. beat the Steelers
b. finish with a better record than the Steelers
c. make the playoffs
d. win the division

No, not really. Just stating facts. And if those two clowns were such studs why where 31 teams not lining up for both of them? In fact, Bell had to take less than what he would have made on last year's tag or would have made with the Steelers offer of 5/70. Then there is 'stache, who no one wanted, save for Jon Gruden. There is a reason these two are gone and a good reason why neither was overly coveted by teams.

I’m just spit ballin’ here but not every team has them as needs or the cap space. Why would the giants want Bell when they have Barkley?

We're not turning on them just because they decided to leave as free agents, the way they should, it's hard to take but we can understand. It's how these 2 douches left us and hurt us (brown not going to buffalo etc and making us take 2 **** picks for him) in the future.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand being upset a player leaves. I just can’t ever think of a time I was angry with a player in any situation. I think we can forget they’re people. Maybe Bell and Brown were having issues we don’t know about. Maybe I’m not a “passionate” sports fan but I’m all for players doing what they can do to get to a situation that they like

There is no reason to have your feelings hurt about a football player making life decisions for himself. Like Corona said, maybe there’s a lot more going on that you don’t know about. Either way it’s their decision and zero reason to be hurt.

I am not mad at AB because I don't like most of these players to begin with so it is hard for them to "hurt" me because none of this stuff surprises me, but this was almost entirely on AB and not the organization.

It was all a money grab from the beginning and instead of simply making that clear and going about his business he bad mouthed players and the team and even worse, he wasn't even consistent or entirely logical in doing so. I remember in that ESPN interview he went from saying him and Ben or him and Tomlin and them don't hang out enough and in the same breath said Tomlin invited him over to watch a game and AB turned him down because he has kids and doesn't have the time to go hang out.

He would be a great case for the study of CTE in living players if they had a way to do it. Ever since that Burfict hit things have been trending this way with AB.

Pittsburgh media is much kinder to their athletes than other sports cities.

For instance, I'm convinced that if the Steelers had made the playoffs this year, none of the Antonio Brown information would have come out, and he'd still be with the team.

The Steelers don't pick WRs in the first round usually. The last one was 2006, and they've done well with how they do it. There will always be misses.

JuJu 2nd round
AB 6th round
Wallace 3rd round
E. Sanders 3rd round
Hines 3rd round
Randle El 2nd round
Santonio 1st round (2006)
Plaxico 1st round (2000)
Yancy Thigpen 4th round

Of that list, I think Hopkins would be the only one I would spend any significant amount of money to keep. WRs are a pretty easily replaceable position. There is a ton of supply coming out every year. With a good system and a top notch QB, you can plug and play a lot of guys and be just fine. I would spend my money on the offense side of the ball on the QB and Oline.

That is the key to the whole thing. I don't think they can just go with the draft and take a WR in the 1st or 2nd and expect the offense to stay on course. Need to do something in FA to protect against the draft. This team had enough holes before AB lost his mind and James went to Detroit, now we are a sinking ship unless we make some solid moves.

Nelson "fills" the CB need but not sure how much I love the signing. Still might be worth it to grab a Byron Murphy in the 1st round too.

He lost out on 14.4 million last year and also had a better offer from the Steelers for 70 million with 35 million guaranteed last year he turned down.

Why do you think you know how much he cares about the money? What's the difference between a couple million when you're already super rich? Seems pretty superficial. He got a contract on his terms and he's probably happy.

It's like, why choose the AF when you could do something tougher and harder, like being an 0311 in the USMC ;)

His contract with the Jets might be for less money per year but he gets 28mil fully guaranteed at signing. The Steelers offer would have only been for 18mil guaranteed at signing. They explained it on NFL Total Access it was all about the Guaranteed money for him

AB will help his team to a winning record and maybe the playoffs
Bell will help his team to a winning record and maybe the playoffs
Steelers will finish the season with a disappointing losing record, Big Ben will retire and Mike Tomlin will get fired.

Which scenario seems more likely?

The first two parts of your third scenario seem possible, but I can't see Tomlin getting fired.

Why do you think you know how much he cares about the money? What's the difference between a couple million when you're already super rich? Seems pretty superficial. He got a contract on his terms and he's probably happy.

This is amusing considering a few million dollars is the reason why 90% of players in all sports choose their team .

rman112

There a much greater chance he would have been hurt last year, over him having lost a step.

Plus, the franchise tag is a screw the player move. Can't blame someone for not wanting to be screwed....multiple years.

Steelers need to cut their GM and Player Relations guys.

Screw the player move? I disagree. They get big money for one year.

Tulane. Clearly you don't know your disappointing QB's very well!

@AdamSchefter
Former Bills’ QB JP Losman, now a 38-year-old offensive coach at Clemson, threw the ball to WRs/DBs so well at the school’s Pro Day today, that an NFL team actually asked him if he had any interest in coming back to the NFL, in which he last played a game in 2011. Losman declined

Why does anyone on here think they know what's best for Bell or any other athlete when it comes to what they want? Would you rather have a 150k year a job that you don't like your coworkers and boss and what you do? Or would you rather have a 75k a year job to try something new and you know a friend or two that works there? I could make a ton more than I do now, I choose not to and love what I do, who I work with and my schedule. I've got friends that make 200k a year but no freedom. Currently sending this from 36000 feet in the air heading to Japan for 2 weeks. My friend is hating life, making bank, but working 14 hours a day and next vacation is in a year. It's all perspective, and based on previous threads by people here, no one can relate to him.

I'll wait. :coffee:

This will be fun to re-visit in December!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

blackbears86

No, not really. Just stating facts. And if those two clowns were such studs why where 31 teams not lining up for both of them? In fact, Bell had to take less than what he would have made on last year's tag or would have made with the Steelers offer of 5/70. Then there is 'stache, who no one wanted, save for Jon Gruden. There is a reason these two are gone and a good reason why neither was overly coveted by teams.

I can't speak for Bell but I heard the big hurdle with AB was the Steelers refusal to trade him to certain teams, and their high asking price, so it's really hard to say he wasn't coveted by several teams.

Yeah the numbers shown in that analogy are WAY off. 150k vs 75k is a huge difference for almost everybody. $15m vs $12m (or whatever Bell's difference is) is a completely different game because you're able to live comfortably at either number, it's just a question of how much luxury you need. But you also have to remember that you'll only be making that money for a few years, as compared to 30-40+ years in the everyday person scenario at 150k vs 75k.

At this point in your life, doesn't mean it's the rest of your life. Worked a lot more a few years ago to get to the point in your life where you can chill. See, once again, all relative and different from person to person, year to year.

You can definitely max out your Roth IRA at 75k, you can do it at 50k. Especially with dual incomes. Lots of factors and it's all relative to just you. So yab, I guess it is kind of like the Bell thing. What if he just got up an quit because he didn't like football and wanted to smoke all day. He's already got millions of dollars and maybe doesn't see the enjoyment of getting hit 30x a game by the DL and LBs as much as you enjoy seeing him go through that.

150k a year in NYC is a lot different than 75k in Milwaukee compared to Kansas City. So say you're.making 150k but working 80 hours a week in DT NYC, commuting 3 hours a day and living in a 500 sq ft apt you're never at compared to having a nice house outside of KC, 30 hours a week and doing stuff you like, would you still take the 150k all day long? I might when I'm younger but than change to having more control of what I want to do.

Again, there's no right answer at all. Each person's different. Trying to show that it's kind of dumb for people to say Bell is an idiot for walking away from X amount a year for Y or wanting to have control over his own destiny. People want that for themselves in life but fail to realize athletes want the same thing, even if they make a ton of money.

150K, just like everyone else on here said.

None of your comparisons to Bell make sense BTW.

He would have gotten more money, was able to stay in a comfortable situation that he is used to. Could stay in his same house. Play with his same friends. And go to work at the same place every day, for a franchise that has always been know as a winner.

OR, he could start all over, learn a new playbook, have to make new friends (he hopes), play in a new system, move to a new city and start life all over again, and hope for the best. AND do it all for millions less.

He gambled, and lost. Easy as that. He already blasted the Jets as a team he didn't want to play for. He is now labeled as a problem, heading to a garbage team and lost a ton of bank in doing so.

J-E-T-S!

Haven't been to the Playoffs Since 2010. JETS!

Haven't won the division since 1998. JETS!

Haven't won a Super Bowl since 1969. JETS!

Fun fact, since winning that improbable Super Bowl in the 60's, the Jets won zero playoff games in the 70's (never even played in one). Won a playoff game in just the 81 and 86 season in the 80's. And just one single playoff win in all of the 90's.

The Steelers may or may not be rebuilding, but they are far from the clownshoes the Jets are.

Showing all the different factors and influences that can make a decision, showing that people should just athletes do what they want, but it's hard for a bunch of card collectors on a forum to not know what's best for Bell though, I guess.

Can’t imagine a ton of production? He will get 20-25 carries a game and at least 4-6 catches on top of that. Should definitely be very productive least first two seasons
