View Full Version : Painter's Tape or BUST!!!

I just want to start a Public Announcement (if other's agree of course) to emphasize the Best Practice of shipping cards in top loaders with PAINTER'S TAPE to close the open end INSTEAD of clear tape. Sooooo much easier to remove and much better odds that the top loader can still be used to display and isn't gunked up with sticky residue.
I know this sounds petty, but I would just like to promote this technique over others I've experienced.
The Devil is in the details, right?!?

The resealable sleeves are the best to use. Also known as team bags.

Was going to mention this. At the end of the day, you’re buying the card, not the top-loader. As long as the card arrives safe, that’s all that matters.

Exactly this. Sounds like the guy who asked for refunds because the card display was in the picture and they didn’t send it because he was clearly only selling the card not the stand

Painters tape is about half the cost per inch comparing a 3-pack of 300 inch scotch tape to a 60 yard roll of painters tape. Just saying.

I’d prefer no tape at all. As I mentioned previously, team bags/top-loader sleeves are best, in my opinion. However, as long as the card arrives safe, that’s all I care about. When I get a card in the mail, I put it in my own top-loader or magnetic, no matter what.

Agree...team bags eliminate the need to use tape.

Says not to use tape because it can damage the card. Then proceeds to say, use tape.
Take out the tape and you’re good to go.

The more tape you put on a toploader the more secure it is during shipment.

Tape is a horrible idea. I prefer the Panini method of just using rubber bands. Hell who needs top loaders even when you can just use rubber bands. :)!

You can actually save money by just putting the stamp directly on the card and writing the buyer's address below it in sharpie. You can even mail bricks and potatoes this way.

Painter's tape is great, I use it even with team bags. I see no harm in being extra secure and painter's tape is insanely cheap.

I hate when people use tape that isnt painters. Not because of tbe top loader but because some people act like its a nuclear weapon that needs to be contained. I shouldnt have to pull out scissors and risk damaging the card to get your damn mess off the toploader and free my card.

Would it be an issue if I super glue the end of the top loader shut instead of using tape?

Penny sleeve, new top loader, painters tape to pinch the top a little so the card doesn't move around during transit. Then a team bag. A card can move around a lot in a top loader and team bag, inviting surface and edge damage. Its always nice when I buy a card and can remove the painters tape then put the card, top loader with team bag straight into the collection. Its just a case of treating others like you would like to be treated, which is rapidly becoming a lost art.

I only keep scissors at home to cut open my purchases out of their bubble wrap/tape/packing tape/cardboard cocoons. otherwise I have peekaboo cut cards for me, I mean in half, I mean running with scissors is bad.

Team bags are fine but the card can still move. It's safer to tape the top of the toploader so it can't.
A method that has never failed me is to bend the end of the tape over onto itself to act as a pull tab. Then the whole tape can come off clean. I've only ever used clear tape for this because it's all I have access to.

Maybe it's just me, but I never keep the top loader or soft sleeve or team bag that a card is shipped in. Even if the case looks to be in good shape, when a card arrives to me in the mail I take it out, toss the envelope, recycle the loader for a future shipment, and use my own supplies to re-dress the card.
Hence why I ship many cards in used top loaders. I just assume my buyers won't care. And haven't used painters tape in 20 years of shipping cards so I'll take my chances on the edge and surface damage.

Team bags. It looks better and they can be used multiple ways and for other things. Not everybody removes the card to place in their own holder, I would hazard a guess that most leave it the way it came.

Well since you feel so comfortable giving shipping advice to veterans in a hobby you admit to being new to, I have some advice for you as well. You shouldn't take diagonal pictures for your eBay listings. I got vertigo just scrolling through them.

It highlights the colors better than straight on in most cases. I'm using a light box so it's getting great light either way. But at an angle the reflective surfaces look 10x better!
Maybe you should slow down your scrolling?!? I'd be embarrassed to proclaim myself a veteran of anything so easy to pickup.

Penny sleeve, whatever top loader the card has been residing in, scotch tape folded on the end to make removal easier, team bag, padded envelope....shipped.
I like to staple the top loaders shut. Either that, or a hot glue gun. My customers appreciate those added touches.
Those that vote just a team bag is fine, I cant agree with that. The team bag can keep the card from sliding out of the loader, but it still allows it to shift up and down.
Paper tape that is easily removed is the best way to go. It softly pinches the top of the top loader, to keep the card more firmly in place.
Other tape might force you to cut it free to get the card out. I once was in a rush and used a pen to poke the middle of the tape apart, so i could pop it open and get my card, And I stabbed the top of my card. I once slipped with a knife trying to free a card and roughed up the card while doing so.
Painters tape, or any sort of easy peel off tape works best. A team bag is pretty, but not the best you can do.

Try taking two mini's like that shoved horizontally in a toploader out without mashing them. At least you can remove the staples beforehand (but not the jagged holes left afterwards).
Some people take shipping to the extreme when it is and can be really simple.
