Bingo....the evidence has shown, across all sports, that former superstars make lousy executives....it's not just Magic & Isiah....Bird was both a lousy coach and GM, and Mullin struggled with the Warriors.
The main exception would be Jerry West in basketball, and to a lesser extent Frank Robinson in baseball.

Not sure how Larry Bird gets put into the lousy category, Pacers didn't win a title but an NBA Finals + 2 ECF in his 3 years as coach. The early 2000's teams were ruined by the brawl, and the 2010-14 run was exciting just stopped by LeBron and the PG injury. Larry had his misses sure but not in the Magic/Isiah/Jordan level of bad.

Isiah Thomas actually was a good GM and talent evaluator in Toronto. His downfall there had nothing to do with being a bad GM it had to do with trying to gain ownership control. As for his Knicks tenure - I haven’t seen anyone look good there.

Besides the sexual stuff, he was the coach of a team that never reached its potential in 3 Indiana years (lost in first round each year). Carlisle was immediately hired by Bird and the next season they had the best record in the league and went to ECF.

They're not using lance stephenson and rondo to build around Lebron. They are one year rentals. Everyone and their grandma knew this year was going to be a holding period for next year other than that desperate attempt to get AD mid season. That's why he signed a 4 year contract. Come on now, this is very obvious stuff.

Uh, when you sign Lebron James, you're trying to win now. I'm thinking there were probably better shooters available than the guys they signed, and in that case they signed the wrong dudes.. Pretty easy to see that.

Of course they wanted to have a better season. Lebron got hurt, they failed miserably on their attempt to get AD. But it's ridiculous to claim that he's leaving because he failed to build around Lebron this season, lol. They were a bunch of one year rentals with the sole purpose of having room to make plays this summer to actually build around Lebron. Pretty easy to see that. But when you hate Lebron as much as you guys do, you guys end up seeing things that don't exist.

Buddy I'm the furthest thing from a Lebron James "hater".. I thinks he's either the first or second best to ever play the game.. And the lakers have always been the team I root for in the playoffs if my team is out.

I've been told that bronbron can get to the finals with a bunch of scrubs, and that's why he is better than jordan. So yes, there are expectations this year, caused by his fanboys constantly extolling his virtues and playoff mode.

Magic was a part of clearing all the cap space, unfortunately he hasn't been able to land another Superstar to help spoon feed LeBron.

I wouldn't classify Magic as a failure per say. As pgisback stated, all the moves done for the past two years was to clear space for this summer. Magic's success/failure would have been decided who they got as max guys this summer. This year was always going to be an adjustment year. Find out if any of the young guys explode with Lebron and can be kept or just trade pieces. I never thought the Lakers were in a win now mode. The next three years, yes.
No matter what comes out, some of this is going to be pinned on Lebron whether there is truth there or not. He does have a track record of trying to control everything. I can see where you have two uber alphas in Magic and Lebron butting heads.
How does this impact free agency this year for the Lakers. This off season will chart the course of the franchise going forward. If they strike out on KD, Kyrie, Thompson (likely) and maybe even Butler or Boogie, then what? AD or bust?

Lonzo Ball will be the forever mistake
Whether that’s choosing him over Russell (gave up way too soon) or drafting him over Tatum (yes I realize maybe they don’t take him)
He’s the trigger point
Russell, Ingram, LeBron, Kuzma win a lot of games
Yes I realize trading Russell cleared space by dumping Timmy
There were still other ways

Agree with Ball, if he never develops into much. This will go down just like Darko does for us Pistons fans. The only caveat I have with Darko was that very few actually saw him play to get an opinion. It is easily defendable position that Darko was the right pick if you are promised the next Dirk.
Don't agree with Russell. He had to go after his locker room fiasco.

Don't think Magic was a complete failure. He even stated that he was trying to find shooters in his interview. The shooters were getting offered 3-5 year contracts. They had no interest in signing a 1 year deal with LA when LA didn't have the cash to poney up 3 year deals.
Should he have got rid of D-Russell? In hindsight no, but did anyone here think D-Russell was amazing when he was feuding with Swaggy P?
This is more tarnishing to Bron's legacy. He destroys every franchise he goes to, like a freaking virus. And it's up t that virus to determine whether the rest of the team (body) wins or loses. Terrible analogy but that's all I got

Darko was going #2 to whoever drafted. That’s not Detroit’s fault.
Disagree on Russell. Swaggy P sucked.

Korver signed a 3 year deal, so he probably wouldn't take a one year with the Lakers. Didn't Smith have a couple years left on his deal or is he officially a free agent now? The number one requirement was to only have one year on the books in any deal. The market for players shrinks considerably.
Edit: just looked it up. Smith is still signed through this year. He won't be a free agent until the season is done. So he was no go for the Lakers.

You are right, not all the contract was guaranteed. Korver was similar. He signed a 3 year deal in 2017. Both players could have been waived at the end of the year costing LA around 7.2 million (3.8 for Smith, and 3.4 for Korver). Not much in the grand scheme of things to clear salary. But, when your main goal is to not have any salary going into this year, that is 7.2 million of dead money and may mean the difference in signing the second big name free agent for Lebron's new big three. Rondo and Stephenson (while not a fit for the team this year) are free and clear from a salary perspective.

When Jeannie Buss hired Magic it was impulsive. It was more about firing her brother. It was also a mistake.
Out of that mistake came the Magic partnership with Pelinka, and a plan, and ultimately -past his prime but still potentially great- LeBron.
LeBron comes with baggage [Klutch.] Magic and Pelinka understood that, but it's worth a shot.
Since the HIV diagnosis forever ago, Magic lives in the moment. He is an icon and a celebrity, and rich beyond his wildest dreams when he was a kid in Michigan. He can't keep his mouth shut when in front of a microphone and a sports reporter and / or camera. He believe he was honest when he said contribution to this resignation is based on wanting to tweet about Westbrook getting a 20-20-20.
Now, how to move forward? There do not seem to be a lot of options to move forward.
So how about moving sideways? Kareem Abdul Jabar is equally an icon. Kareem is a really smart dude, though not Mr. personality. Kareem has been campaigning for a position with the Lakers on and off for years. Give the job to Kareem for 1 year. He'll at least work hard, and can't be any worse.
It must be clear to Kareem that he is a temp, and he gets the job as honorary. And sure, if something good happens this summer while he is on the job, he can interview for an extension.
In the next year an extensive job search for the real next guy takes place.

Rondo and Stephenson (while not a fit for the team this year) are free and clear from a salary perspective.
If the Lakers didn't add 3 point shooters of 7.2 million? They deserve to lose.
You can clear that easily by strapping it to a draft pick... which the Lakers could have done if they weren't so awful they were in the lottery.
That's horrible management.

When I heard the news Magic had made another shocking announcement from out of nowhere, I immediately feared the worst. What a relief it was to find he was merely leaving the Lakers as opposed to relaunching his "Magic Hour" talk show.
Earvin should take his talents to Boston.
