View Full Version : When do you stop buying your prospects?

Curious what others do since there will be a variety of answers here. Thought it might be a fun discussion.

Let me throw out an example: Anfernee Simons.

Full disclosure: I only own a few low-end colored Prizms and an Optic base auto now.

I bought a decent amount of his cards throughout the season and sold off all of my high-end stuff over the last week. I still have him listed as one of my saved searches on eBay. But based on prices, I'm not really looking to buy anything else at the time.

That being said, I am going back and forth on if I will even buy another card of his because the initial wave of growth in prices has occurred on his cards. The question is now if/when the second wave will happen because he is a player that may not get an ample amount of playing time for a quite a while due to the Blazers depth chart. If I stumble across a super deal, then I may buy it but most people feel that way about any card I would think.

So when do you call it quits, no longer invest in a player, and you stop searching for deals on their cards? Do you try to catch a 2nd or 3rd wave of growth in prices or do you try to cash in early?

I know there are a lot of variables in this equation, but I'd love to hear how some of you have worked through this process. Not asking anyone to share who they are investing in now, but really more about players that you cashed in at the right time that you aren't stocking up on or maybe not even holding a stash of any more.

I set a top price before the season and stick with it. I go as far as setting prices for individual sets and even 1/1s. If a price is higher than what i decided on before the season i'm done.

It's not perfect. But it works for me. And i'm pretty good at guesstimating prices of guys i'm interested in.

When they stink up the joint so bad that they've been dropped from the rotation.

I think in the case of simons, if he’s not producing solid numbers by his 3rd season (this season being a write off as most knew he wasn’t going to play much) I’d say you would no longer be buying as a prospect but as a fan.

For me, the 2nd to 3rd season jump is key. That's where I set my limits now. I stopped collecting Murray because of that.

I kind of agree with the 2nd to 3rd year jump. It's a big reason I bought in on Spicy P this season.

For me it really depends by player. For some guys I never stop buying because I love their game and think they will be really good. For others it could be when their situation changes or when they hit their first hot streak. Normally what I try and do is pick 3 or 4 cards that I love and sell the other stuff when they have increased enough that I am in on those few rare nice cards for almost nothing.

For this year I was going hard on Mitchell Robinson but then he went off for a few weeks and I was able to sell everything and make 3-4x my investment. Normally I would hold a few high end ones but I really think that if the Knicks get Durant and Irving Mitchell Robinson will be the centerpiece along with their draft pick for another superstar and then his prices would have dropped a lot and he wouldn't be on my favorite team anymore!

Mitchell Robinson is another player that I have gone back and forth on, but I am still buying his stuff if the price is right. I've wondered what his value could be if KD and Irving joined the Knicks. Would it help his value because more eyes would be on the team?

What if the Knicks are able to draft Zion? Does Robinson get lost in the shuffle of big name players on the team at that point? Or does he still hold value and be viewed as a Klay Thompson or Draymond Green-type for Golden State? Quality players on a great team, still have decent card value, but aren't the biggest names on the team.

The night of the lottery may help me determine some of my plans for him.

My plan is to wait until the offseason - I think that prices will get depressed in the offseason no matter what. After the draft we will start seeing the rumors flying around - if the Knicks get 1 or 2 and rumors start flying about Anthony Davis that I would get out on Mitchell Robinson because IMO he will either be included in the trade or be getting very little minutes as the backup C. However if it looks like the Knicks are going to keep Zion if they get him and they still get Irving and Durant I will likely pick up some more Mitchells at the offseason price because I think he will 100% be a massive fan favorite in NY. Knicks fans have always loved defense and shot blocking - I mean Tyson Chandler was a huge fan favorite and with Mitchells RC's be in Knicks uniforms and him being drafted and developed by the team he could have major hobby value to Knicks fans especially if he is starting C blocking 3 shots a game and anchoring an elite defense.

I bought a lot Simons stuff early on but holding off into offseason too many jumped on the bandwagon after one game. I had three eBay sellers pull the auction and reposted the cards at a higher price. I had a member in here pull out a deal we were working on for almost a month after the 37 point game. I'm looking for a few more silvers and maybe a trade but am done bidding on his stuff this season.

I thought you were talking about Simmons for a minute. I would have suggested passing on his stuff.
