I took a 10x12 or so manila envelope to get postage, since AFAIK, you can't print flats postage online. It was a photo with two thin cardboard backings. About 4 oz. The lady tells me that since I wrote "Photos - Do Not Bend" on it, it's now a parcel. I'm pretty sure she just made that sh*t up.

She did, but do not bend is an advertisement saying please bend me. However if it is more than 3/4 thick or completely unbendable she was right.

Nah, thickness was fine and it could still bend a bit. She was perfectly fine with giving me the regular price after I said I'll just cross it out. But after she handed me a ballpoint pen, I wasn't gunna sit there for 10 min and do that.. Lol

TBH, that really sounds like a parcel.

Sounds like a parcel to me as well, but why not ship photos like a birthday card?

Why would you send a photo in the mail? Just email it to them and have them print it. Saves time and money.

Maybe he sold it
Maybe they are signed
Maybe someone wanted prints

Apparently it was perfectly acceptable as a flat.

Some photos have value that cannot be just printed off. Old photos for example are valued due to the type of printing as much as the subject itself.

Does not mean another PO down the line cannot decide otherwise.

What did you mean by shipping like a birthday card? How do you shio a larger photo (8x10 or bigger) at the flats rate?

8X10 I would do like I would a lower end comic book. Sandwiched between 2 thick pieces of cardboard. then in a bubble mailer. A 5X7 or postcard I would use a greeting card sized envelope sandwiched in 2 pieces of comic backing board or similar cardstock type paper and mail it that way.
What I was saying is there have been cases on one PO letting something get through but somewhere along the line someone decides the charge is incorrect and adjusts it. With electronic postage it will get auto billed to the sender. Otherwise the receiver may get it with postage due.

Yeah, but that would be at the 70 cent rate, right? I've done that with smaller photos and haven't had any problems with a forever stamp and an extra ounce stamp. I guess I just don't get why there's nothing similar to the 'nonmachinable' category for the larger stuff, since the Flats category just seems to be regular letter mail, just bigger.

Yeah its at the 2 ounce rate which is same as non-machinable.
Larger flats don't get machined anyway. What I was told here was that after the 2nd ounce all you pay is the extra ounce and not worry about non-machinable rate.

That's interesting. Thanks for the replies!
