Quality Controlling 2010 Playoff Contenders Football (Gallery & Controverisal Video)
February 9, 2011 at 3:18 PM
With the official release date of the highly anticipated 2010 Playoff Contenders Football now just a week away, members of the Panini America football team have spent the last two days conducting the product’s two-tiered quality control process, first on location at the printing and packing facility, and yesterday at corporate headquarters in Arlington, Texas.
I was able to compile a comprehensive gallery of some of Contenders’ sweeter hits before they were we reintroduced into packout. That gallery follows. But I apparently also stepped on some toes while filming a video of the QC check, inadvertently creating quite the controversy in the process. Stay tuned to the end of the video to see what I mean.
I’ll do my best to get more information for you later this week.

I didn't watch the video...
But all those pictures show sticker autos for the Rookie Tickets - can this be confirmed? or am I just behind the times on this?

Not sure if the controversy is real or not. Tracy mentioned that there are different versions of the rookie tickets and the 2 guys got all worked up. Maybe short print college tickets again? There are SOME on card rookies, not all.

I just watched the video!!! Man they looked at each other like they have been caught in a lie..It seems to me that all the autos had stickers..Is that correct???

If you just watch the last 45 sec of the video you will see what they are talking about. When Tracy asked them about different version of the Rookie auto cards they were acting as if he just gave away who really shot Kennedy. I wonder what they are trying to keep wrapped in a bag?

Ugh - that officially might push me into the SPA set (even though it's college) - I'm not a big fan of having to chase variations, some stickers, some not etc...
I'll be interested to hear more.

They got all defensive at the end yet that part of the video is still out there. Something doesn't seem right.

So maybe there are some serious chase SP's and no one was supposed to know about it

To me, it was more of a way to viral market. "Oh there is something else here in Contenders that we haven't told yet!"
To me, they kept it a secret, letting people speculate/hunt what it is, and then when its released and people find the rookie auto variations, let the cat out of the bag.

100% possible. They're trying to create extra buzz by making it a "mystery" of what might be in the product that we don't know about instead of just flat-out saying it.

hype and fake...until Panini fixes the problems they are generating with every set i'm not impressed at all...looks like the autos are at least on a little better background area...last years were god awful, you couldnt even see them....as far as the rest...bunch of BS and horrible acting.

They don't do live videos. It was released intentionally to create hype over the product.
As I stated above though, the 5 autos per box instead of 4 is great news, 2 on card and 3 others per box.

I am pretty sure during the video they said that every rc on the cover of the box has an on card autograph card in the set. Look at minute 408-435. The guy with the hat on says it. And yes the ending was staged!!! Come on people if we as collectors are that gullible we are in trouble!

Why couldn't they have used the base card stock for the rookie auto's? They would have looked much better IMO.

The vast majority of collectors are rubes. The fact that they buy this stuff knowing they'll probably lose half their $ (if they're lucky) proves it.

Yeah the extra auto is huge. So, 60 autos in a case (on average)?
Collectors have that one product every year that they get more excited about than any other. For some, it may be Topps Chrome, National Treasures, Exquisite, SP Authentic, Certified, whatever. For me, it has been Contenders every year for about the past decade.
Can't wait to get my 12-box case from Blowout, hopefully next week. I preordered it in November.:o..........:)!

Oh, that. He's just all worried you'll find out the Sam Bradford 1/1's got pulled in "Quality Control". Don't worry, you'll have plenty of chances at the Mardy Gilyard 1/1 14kt. gold parallel, though. ;)
Did Gellman really poke a jabe at BO in the comments area? What a tool. They always posted his blog and he is a member here. LOL
That was my favorite part of the entire Blog entry. Dude just hates everyone. BO posts on their Blog, and in turn posts links to their site on BO's boards. Whats the big deal?
I like when Tracy says "What should we do? Refilm this whole thing?" Like he couldn't have just cut out the last 20 seconds of that video and called it a day. I might be in the minority here. But I'd rather see all stickers VS some sticker some on card. This is THE set to put together every year now that SP is junked. I hate it when my cards dont match even though its from the same damn set. UD did this before. Some were those horrible foil sticker, others were the hologram stickers and still others were the clear stickers. It just makes it all seem cheap.

I totally understand what you are saying. Personally, I wouldn't mind it if all the Rookie Ticket autos were stickers. However, with the high demand for on-card autos, I can see why Panini does this for the 35 Rookie Premiere rookies. I have not seen the checklist yet, but I assume that there are over 100 Rookie Tickets, as usual. So, the logistics would be a nightmare to produce every single Rookie Ticket with an on-card auto. I mean, this product was delayed a month and a half because they were waiting on just some of the 35 Rookie Premiere on-card autos. Had Panini made all the Rookie Tickets on-card autos, this product would have been delayed until June...

He said towards the start that their would be an average of 2 on card autos and 3 sticker autos per box. Thats gonna be a good break cuz the on cards are of the 35 guys at the premier i think. They must have had Ben Tate, Marcus Easley and mike Kafka signing their a$$es off that means. with 2 on cards per if its the 35 premier players, ur all but guaranteed to get Easley and Kafka or Decker butill be happy with Decker. I think that little tiff may have been staged though. They cant do college tickets cuz UD has the NCAA license. They do have the championship tickets though that are 1/1 and they have 14kt gold tickets this year I heard. Them will be impossible to get and worth a ton with the price of gold

Very true, but with a product that was set to drop this year in the season they could have gone all on card. I mean most of the set fillers in here are scrubs. I'm sure they could sign the cards just as fast as a sheet of stickers. I know stickers can be inventoried and thats why they use them. But all on card is not that hard. Look at 2000 Contenders. All on card, stars and scrubs. They even got NFL Europe players to sign on card and they were around the world at the time! And I dont think that set was delayed as well. Mind you they also had to contend with Topps, UD, Collectors Edge, Pacific etc all trying to get these rookies to sign cards and they still pulled it off.

I totally agree. When they released the sell-sheet many months ago it was the white base stock, and we were all pretty stoked for it. I am very dissappointed that they decided to go to foil board again, instead of sticking to the oridinal '98 look. All well, hopefully they at least resolved the bubbly auto issues from last year.

do not like the idea of random SPs, variations, and sticker vs non sticker. this sounds like a mess. a nd the cards really dont look that great either... i mean an auto over the "rookie" word? as if we didnt know they were rookies!?

it boils down to Panini is a lazy company and they will continue to put out crap because they know people will just buy it. If that is not the case, then they have a lot of people who have zero clue about sports cards making decisions...it's one or the other.

So the big secret regarding variations is that there are home & away rookie tickets...I'm not so sure I like what they've done here (and I say that as a big Conteders fan).
Well, my case shipped today (Thanks Blowout), so I should have it either Thursday or Friday. I'll post the results after I break it.
Personally, though, I really don't think I am a fan of these home & away variations.

I opened 4 and half boxes today and all I can say is WOW
I pulled 5 autos in all but one of the boxes. 2 were on card in each box.
I pulled rookie autos of Best, Dez Brayant and Mathews. An auto of
Tom Rathman and some nice rookie autos....most of them 1st rounders.
My biggest hit was 1/1 ticket...my first since I started busting contenders
every year since 99. I had one dinged auto, which sucked because it was
one of the bigger names, but most of the cards were dead mint. Only
one redemption. You will NOT be disappointed with this product!
