Why would he take a shorter deal?

I believe he could sign a 1+1 and be eligible for a 5 year supermax in 2020.
Could be wrong

2 + 1
The third year gives him a bit of health security (gets him over 100M guaranteed) relative to a truly short term deal. While if he is healthy, the opt out after two puts him at 10 years, and eligible for the 35% max.

As a Celtics fan, I hate it.
As a fan of more eastern time zone games of one of the nbas best players, I love it.

At 27 yrs. old it will be very surprising if he signs a short term deal. This should be his big bucks long term deal leading into retirement.

If he does 2+1 he will only be 29, still young enough to get a 5 year sueprmax.
Its hitting that 10 years and unlocking $$$
I doubt he plans on retiring at 32ish

i kinda always thought this would be what happened if they reached the finals or better. stay 2 yrs or so like a pg13 and reevaluate.

I hope he wins a ring with the raptors then brings his talents to SoCal and wins one with the clippers. That would be absolutely legendary

that would be good for the East and I think the NBA in general. Toronto loves him and the team seems to understand his injury and load management. plus they have a good core for the next couple of seasons.
the only thing is that he has that injury so he may want to lock in a 5 year deal right now just to be safe instead of a short term deal.

NBA needs him to stay in the east! Along with the Raptors lol

"If the Raptors win this, it'll be hard for Kawhi to leave," said Shelburne. "I still think he does, I know there's like this flickering hope that he would stay regardless because he does enjoy Canada.

After the game last night he might want to rethink staying in Toronto.
He got NO help from the rest of the starters. Lowry scored some, but was limited due to foul trouble and did foul out. Siakim, Green and Gasol were virtual no shows. If it wasn't for VanVleet... the Warriors would have won by 15+

Well if Kawhi should think about leaving, Giannis should ask for a trade. Same reasons you put except swap out the Raps players for the Bucks ones.

If they lose these Finals, I'd like to see him stay and try again. Philly were a tough out but you don't know who they'll bring back.
I just don't know how he could turn down a max contract with the worries about his body..
Even if the Raps max him out he can ask for a trade down the line.

Not sure if you've been following but Kawhi wants the money and to be the star.
That's how he got that sweet New Balance deal.

Well, if Giannis was from LA and not under contract he'd probably leave MIL.

Yep!!
24 year old.... first deep run in the playoffs. Time to move on. Makes sense.

Hopefully he can find a home somewhere in the Western Conference. Maybe Giannas can follow in 2021, and they can turn the East into a D- League for the West.

You'd like the guy that made your guy look pedestrian to leave the Conference wouldn't you.
Cracks me up.
I'm just glad we got a great series from Philly vs Toronto at least.

This offseason is going to be interesting, to say the least.
Ultimate game of scared chicken waiting for that first star to commit to a destination so the new banana boat crews can form.

Yeah? Somehow Kawhi doesn't strike me as the type.

No.
Bucks got beat by the Celtics last year without Kyrie and Hayward.... this season they beat them 4-1 to advance to the ECF.
Id LOVE for Giannis and the Bucks to get a second chance at beating the Raptors with Kawhi.
