Figured I'd combine the Milb and MLB Draft discussion threads into one this time.

Several teams have the day off.

Today's notables include:

Cody Sedlock*
Konnor Pilkington*
Simeon Woods-Richardson*
Brendan McKay*
Jackson Kowar*
Ricardo Sanchez*
James Kaprielian

I'm actually excited for the MLB Draft probably for the first time ever.

I am just really happy for JJ Bleday, and his soon to be Top 10 pick status. I covered JJ and his brother Adam (currently a coach in the Orioles system, Astros draft pick in 2017) when they were kids in Titusville, PA. All of the coverage will say he is from Florida, but they moved to Florida to complete high school for the boys and get them the baseball attention they needed but he is from Northwest PA originally.

As a sports writer it's exciting to see someone I covered grow into a professional athlete.

Huge Bleday fan here too (obviously). Exceptional kid and has a great attitude while still playing with an edge. Hoping he doesn’t go to Miami because then I won’t be able to see him in the minors, but I’m psyched for him.

Hopefully his pro debut won’t be for another month or so!

I'm hoping the Diamondbacks can build upon their weak, but improving, farm system with this draft. They have 8 of the top 100 picks! 16, 26, 33, 34, 56, 74, 75, and 93. GO DBACKS!

Nice. I was hoping that Bleday would get picked by the Tigers, because his AA stop would be here in Erie, PA, right down the road from his hometown. Would be great for the kid to play for a bit near home. If not Detroit, then at least another team who has an affiliate in the Eastern League and would travel through Erie on the road.

So he was drafted only 2 years ago and is already made the move to coach? Interesting.

Adam was a 27th Round pick of the Astros in 2017

He made 31 minor league appearances in 17-18 with 5 starts (all in 17) finishing in the Carolina League.

4-4 record, 3.40 ERA, 2/4 on saves, 96 K, 42 BB in 76.2 IP, 1.28 WHIP

He actually went back to college after Houston released him, and then got a call with a coaching opportunity in Baltimore. He was going to go to Florida State in the Civil Engineering program.

I agree. I promise you KC will take Witt and continue to build their soon to be playoff team. They have a devastating minor league system. Baltimore drafts Rutschmann, they will get crap for Sisco or any other catchers if they decide to trade them and bank on Adley. You may get 40 homers from Adley, but how many will be solo's because no one will be on base ahead of him?

I like sikkema saw most of his innings. He has big fans in BA who think he can start. At worst yanks are getting a lefty who can get righties out in the pen. With the rule changes he will be perfect fit.

Jaypers, do you know anything about Matt Thompson? He's the White Sox 2nd round pick.

I have a couple of his cards ending soon. Just sayin'. ;)

Scouting Report: Thompson entered the year as the top prep pitcher in Texas and one of the most exciting pitchers in the 2019 class. He jumped onto national radars as an underclassman with big performances on the travel ball circuit thanks to his power fastball, feel to spin the ball and athleticism on the mound. All of those traits still exist for Thompson now, but his stock fell this spring as scouts saw his stuff come and go. His fastball has been 90-96 mph at times, but just as often he has thrown more in the 88-92 mph range, which concerned scouts who were already looking for him to improve his consistency from outing to outing. Thompson throws a mid-80s slider with sharp, late, two-plane break that’s one of the better sliders in the class. However, the pitch can at times blend into his curveball, which is typically in the upper 70s with more 11-to-5 shape than the horizontal bite of his slider. While Thompson has a fast, whippy arm action out of a high, three-quarter slot, scouts are concerned about his strike-throwing ability. Some teams would specifically point to a wrist wrap that Thompson has in the back of his arm stroke that could limit his control moving forward. While it hasn’t been the best spring for Thompson, he still has a projectable, 6-foot-2, 184-pound frame, excellent feel to spin the ball and natural, high-end athleticism that player development would love to see in an organization. Thompson is committed to Texas A&M.

Volpe has a very high number himself, and may command more than slot. I would imagine if they were going for Leiter to complete the Delbarton Duo, they would've done so. Leiter's number is somewhere around 4mil, and it'll be tough (but not impossible) to do that in the 3rd round or later. I suppose they could take him, then do 6 senior signs.

Volpe is a legit first rounder on merit, though

I'm just worried this is Cito Culver all over again.

Yankees took him at the end of the 2010 1st Round, wasn't projected anywhere near that spot. He still hasn't seen the big leagues and probably never will and isn't even in MiLB anymore, he plays independent ball in the Can-Am Assoc.

Just seems the Yankees have had a tendency to overdraft from these late 1st round picks at times

I'm no expert but I don't think Sisco sticks at catcher long term, and I think that's been the consensus for awhile. If he hits, they'll find a spot for him, but you don't pass on Rutschman because you have Sisco.

Per a local NJ article, Jack Leiter has told teams he is no longer interested in signing and will be going to college.

He’ll be a DE Soph, so he’ll be back in the draft pretty soon.

Florida getting Allan and Barco, and Vandy getting Leiter (and Wesley Scott and likely Spencer Jones) is going to make for a fun series in the next couple years.

SS over catcher any day!

Catcher provides the most positional value. He’s one of the best catching prospects we’ve ever seen. The difference between the average catcher and a top 3 catcher is higher than an average shortstop and a top 3 shortstop. He will impact the game as a great hitter and a great defensive catcher. Witt JR is just in high school, Rutschmann had crazy stats and so much success in college. Witt might end up being better but the right pick was Rutschmann. There’s a reason why he’s proclaimed as the best prospect since Harper

They can Do it after round ten, right?
