View Full Version : Feedback: Prices on cards or not at card shows? Buying / selling

As it relates to physical card shows, as a...
BUYER: Do you like to see prices on the respective cards, so you know where your negotiating begins, and general sense of what prices the dealer is looking for? Or, do you prefer to have to ask about their prices, and use that to open a more open dialogue on buying and trading from them?
On the flip side, as a ...
SELLER: Do you price all or most of your cards with your advertised or ceiling sell price? Do you think this is good to ward away casual lookers and non serious buyers? Do you think this pigeon holes your sales? Conversely, do you not price your items, to drum up more conversation or maybe to have buyers want to look at your cards more?
^^ I mainly am referring to cards in your display cases. I totally understand being organized with $1 boxes, and lots and teams, etc.
Would love some feedback on your preferences! Thanks.

As a buyer, I would love to see prices. This helps me start the negotiation as well as give me a sense if this dealer is serious and realistic on his/her prices and not just using the space to show off the cards

I set up at a monthly show and all my cards are priced, either individually or at a price point (Ie quarter box, dollar box, etc.)
As a buyer, I don't even consider buying from tables with no prices.

I like to see prices.
Waste of time to inquire about prices on multiple cards.

I think this is a 100% consensus, which I appreciate. This validates most of what I'm thinking.

+1
Gotta have prices. I'd also put reasonable prices rather than jacking them up with hopes of negotiating.

A different point of view. I am a window shopper. No prices means I will look at your nice cards & walk on by.
You have a price & it seems like a great deal you may get me to buy a card I had no thought of purchasing when I walked into the show or store.

Prices are great unless all the prices are based on Beckett. I don't even bother making an offer if something that I can get for 50 cents has a $5 sticker on it.

No prices in a showcase, a flea market table or anywhere else I just walk on by. I don't have time to try and get their attention and haggle with them.
I used to and 99% of the time it is I dunno. Make me an offer? Which drove me nuts.

I rarely if ever go to shows but when I do if there are no prices on the cards I just keep on walking. The one and only time I went to the National, when it was in Baltimore, I passed by numerous tables with no prices. Not wasting my time perusing your wares if you can't even take the time to price them.

I understand from a sellers perspective that it is difficult to price cards at each and every show especially with modern cards that fluctuate by the day. But it is a must in my opinion. In the rare instances when I do ask for a price, the guy starts flipping through a Beckett and I have stand there while he finds it before I can say no thanks when all I want to do is walk away.

I set up at 1 or 2 shows per month and I notice that I am one of the few people (out of 20-25 dealers) who has everything priced. As RCMB noted, it is a pain to price the modern cards that are in my showcase(s) because of price fluctuations. Yet I make it a point to do it within a day or two of the show on the hot cards. My binders are where deals can be had as I don't get to update the prices in there very often.

As soon as the Beckett comes out that is when you walk away. Don't even waste your timeat that point.

As a buyer, I really need to see prices. I really don't like to see dealers with random cards in boxes with no prices....just lazy IMO. I like to see prices on showcases also....I have more tolerance than the box situation though.
As a seller at shows, I have $1 boxes with discounts clearly notated. All showcase cards are priced. Any random cards in a box or stacked on the table are always priced.
Also dealers....if you have a bunch of boxes for customers to go thru, have chairs for people to sit on while spending time going thru them.

Thanks got the great feedback! ^^ I heard the "bring chairs" for the commons/set fillers is always the most overlooked thing at a trade show.
