Is Panini trying to sabotage UD or getting ready to run at the exclusive?

As a Rangers fan.... this is terrible news and I'm kind of glad I don't really collect hockey anymore

Meh it’s only a temporary thing. Didn’t Eichel sign with Panini or was it Leaf? Hischier and Patrick never signed with UD in the beginning and now all 3 have moved to UD.

I expect this to happen with Kakko in a few years as well. His SPA Future Watch autographs will be released in a future product as well, just like we saw this year with Eichel as well.

Oh no question. Exclusives are brutal for the hobby.

I think this is the truth but in a broader sense. Upper Deck having an exclusive for the NHL is the real culprit here. I miss having Topps and Pacific making the sets they had when I got serious about collecting in the early 2000s, and Panini did some really interesting things even outside of the Pacific properties they owned at the time.
Pound for pound I put In The Game at the top of the pack from 2002-2006 and wish they were offered the chance to have a license. I find it difficult to believe the league benefits more from an exclusive contract with Upper Deck than it would by having more producers in the fold.

I agree that Upper Deck's Exclusive with the NHLPA plays a big role in these kinds of things. Exclusives of any kind aren't good for any hobby.
I like what Panini did in the hobby, and some find that this Kakko Exclusive signing is Panini's way of "striking back" at UD in a sense. Upper Deck also holds Trading Card Autograph Exclusives in others sports that handcuff the licensed manufacturer. So UD has been on both sides of the fence many times now.
As for the NHLPA and going with an Exclusive contract, I think the PA see's it as the less headaches the better. From past experiences, I guess they prefer to deal with one company than oppose to multiple. I heard Panini was tough to deal with at times.
I hope the next contract invites more companies into the fold and the NHLPA finds a way to get a deal done with more than one trading card manufacturer. The hobby needs it.
I personally would love to see what Topps would do with an NHL licence again.
