What are the 10 most valuable football cards ever?

I'm guessing the players might be Jim Brown, Joe Montana, Tom Brady, Emmitt Smith, Jerry Rice, Terry Bradshaw, Otto Graham, Peyton Manning, Troy Aikman and Bart Starr as those are like the greatest players who also won multiple rings, but what are the actual 10 most valuable cards ever?

Grading really complicates things because hypothetically someone could find a "PSA 10" Bronko Nagurski 1935 National Chicle and all of a sudden we'd have a Honus Wagner level card.

I would think in general the lowest sn# Contenders auto will be the highest value card of players since 1998. Though the National Treasures RPAs will also be up there. The 1989-1997 years are a bit messy with all of the amazing and innovative cards, but I don't think any Top 10 of All Time cards are going to come out of these years so we can set them aside. Prior to 1989 you really only have one RC option per player and in that case it comes down to grading.

So easy Top 10 cards would be: (Edited because marinocollector reminded me how little I know about $10,000 cards ;) )
- Bronko Nagurski 1935 National Chicle (high grade)
- Tom Brady 2000 Contenders Championship Auto
- Peyton Manning Contenders Auto
- Drew Brees Contenders Auto
- Aaron Rodgers Contenders Auto

Beyond this it comes down to grades for cards like:
- Jim Brown 1958 Topps RC
- Bart Starr 1957 Topps RC
- Johnny Unitas 1957 Topps RC
- Joe Montana 1981 Topps RC
- Jim Thorpe 1933 Goudey Sport King "RC"
- Roger Staubach 1972 Topps RC

To give an example of the difference grades can make, you can buy an ungraded Staubach RC for <$50.......or a PSA 9 for close to $10,000.

"TheFrenzy" ... you are always the best! Thank you!

Out of curiousity, what would a non-graded Nagurski card cost? Not one that is in terrible condition, just one that is't graded at all?

Also, WHY is a nagurski worth so much? Even more than the Jim Thorpe from 1933 you mentioned?

As far as I know, I think the 1935 Chicle set was the first "NFL" set of cards ever produced. I know there was at least one college football set made back in the 1890s, but professional football didn't exist then and college football had yet to become a national phenomenon. Nagurski was by far the most famous player in the 1935 Chicle set. (Though coach Knute Rockne is also featured and his cards are quite expensive.) It wouldn't be until the late 1940s that more NFL sets were produced by companies like Leaf and Bowman. So even though guys like Jim Thorpe and Red Grange might have been more popular than Nagurski, they were only featured in the multi-sport 1933 Goudey Sport Kings set and didn't get cards in an actual NFL set until, I believe, the 1955 Topps All-American set.

So to sum it up, Nagurski's was the most popular player featured in the first NFL set that came out almost 15 years before the next NFL sets did. Even an ungraded, crumpled up, awful condition card would probably still cost close to $1,000.

^ Awesome summary thank you!!

Also out of curiosity, would the highest grade possible Joe Montana RC be worth less then the Drew Brees card you mentioned? If so, is that only because it's easier to find or because it's no autographed?

Lol Frenzy. Your easy top 10 list has only 2/5 cards that are real.

I hate to say it, but Siberian might be right on this one. Outside of high grade 65 Namath’s and the bronco.... not many cards can pass the value of the 1/1 rookie Brady’s and champ ticket. Pretty much has been that way since 28-3 turned into a win for the pats.

The Rodgers 05 SPA 1/1 is up there too. But who knows with the accusations of trimming.

I don't collect Contenders autos.....Did they really ditch the Championship Ticket auto during the Brees-Rodgers years?

Yeah thanks a lot Seahawks, Rams and Falcons! I would think all the top cards are Brady related and for good reason.

Naguraki is also in the high series which is quite a bit tougher.

Allot of this as one person mentioned also depends on grade or if saying raw NM.

Hard to believe a Brady or brees card is worth more than a rare mayo cut plug or even the incredibly tough 48 leafs.

Surprisingly enough one of the most expensive cards is the 2017 Nathan Peterman Contenders Emerlad. Currently going for around $1,000,000 USD. I made an offer of $700,000 and it was rejected by the seller.

Ugh. Not saying you're wrong, you're probably right but I have a hard time believing all those high grade vintage cards didn't get help to achieve those grades.

Sadly it probably doesn't matter.

If we’re are talking all sports then no football card will probably be in the top 5. Possibly even top 10

You can say the same thing about all of those PSA 10 and BGS 9.5 modern cards. There are plenty that have been exposed on here as trimmed/altered. I have a hard time believing that there aren't many more undiscovered.

Championship Ticket 1/1s started in 2003. I had the chance to own Rodgers Championship Ticket in 2006 for $1200; given he was a backup behind Favre at the time this seemed absolutely insane, so I passed. My biggest regret there, but I can’t imagine I would have held it until this point...

/sigh

A PSA 8 sold for 66k in 2008. A PSA 6 sold for 50k this year. The PSA 6 has gone up about 5 times in that time period, so the 8 is probably worth about 200k-300k today.

A PSA 9 Jim Brown RC sold for 336k. A PSA 9 Joe Namath RC sold for 264k. There is one PSA 9 Nagurski. It may be a million dollar card today. I would think that is would sell for more than any Brady card.

Wowsers!!!!!!!

Is there any PSA 10 of the Jim Brown or Joe Namath? If there is, what would it sell for today?

$1 milly for the Bronko is amazing but wouldn't the best Brady card (whatever that is??) sell for even more???

A 2003 Ultimate Collection LeBron Logoman Auto only sold for 312K. I doubt any Brady would sell for that other than the Contenders. I don't see any modern card going for over a million, I believe about 500k is the most any modern card has sold for.
