View Full Version : Ever had to take a card out of a graded case?

I have some old cards I purchased off ebay years ago that were unfortunately graded by the likes of GEM (motto: come to Gem where all cards get a 10).

Anyway, I just wanted the cards for cheap so I pulled the trigger but now that I'm more into collecting, there are some I'd rather have done by BGS. Anyone ever have to open one of these? Is it possible? My only option seems to be to lay it on a concrete floor and hit it with a hammer which I could probably do and not damage the card but not ideal.

Any thoughts?

I've done this serveral times. The way I found easiest is to get 2 pliers, attach them to the top/bottom end, and gently twist. Will snap..then can pull card out.

Also pretty sure the holders of those "other companies" are nowhere near as sturdy as the BGS holders so getting them open shouldn't be quite as difficult.

One pair of pliers, just go to the top corner where the label is, twist off a little chunk of the corner, then just pry it open with a screwdriver across the label (don't aim it at the card). Easy as pie.

Thanks all! I should have posted "Has anyone seen a card graded by GEM that wasn't a 10 lol"
