View Full Version : Manning vs Brady Long-Term. My thoughts.

Manning just beats Brady in every category expect rings. However, once Tom hangs up the pads people will forget Brady. Manning on the other hand has a huge tv personality. Very marketable. Tom is kind of boring outside football. We’ll be seeing Manning on the big screen for years to come, or possibly in a coaching position later down the line. I think Peyton catches back up to Brady in value within a decade. Watch the career highlights between them. Manning is far superior. A bad defense and a small market kept Peyton from 10+ rings. Hopefully people will actually take time to watch film and witness the greatness that was The Sheriff. Looking for Contenders Manning Rookie PSA 9 or 10 PM me.

Joking aside, there's tons of qb's that would have been incredible if they just had better situations. Jim Kelly would be a 4x super bowl winner if he wasn't born into the Niners/Cowboys dynasty era.
The hobby only cares about hypotheticals and what ifs if you're a 1st or 2nd year rookie with upside. They could care less when you're a retired dadbod doing catchy Nationwide jingles.

Brady will pass Manning in yards and touchdowns this year as long as he stays healthy. Hard to say Manning will be seen as the GOAT with Brady likely surpassing him in both those categories. Not to mention Brady has significantly fewer interceptions. When you factor in the super bowl rings, it won’t even be close really.

I don’t understand how Manning isn’t equal or worth more. You want to collect team cards fine. Patriots team cards should be worth the most. But, we’re talking individual cards. Individual QB cards. Manning and Marino should be the most valuable. I’ve never seen any QB’s compare to either of them. And, Manning made 15 playoff appearances to 10 SB’s wasn’t that crazy actually.,

If Manning had 5 or 6 rings, this would be debatable. But he doesn't, so it's not. We can point to why Brady was in a better position to succeed, etc etc...but history only remembers the wins, not the excuses.
The fact that Brady is still going on age 42 still playing at an all-pro level with no foreseeable end in sight is icing on the cake.
Peyton's 2nd super bowl was giftwrapped to him by a defense that decimated Cam. He had 141 yards, 0 scores, and a pick.
It's really not close.
Now I'm certainly not saying his stuff can't have a gradual increase over time when nostalgia starts kicking in like a lot of the star players of his era.
But when it comes to Peyton vs. Brady...just no.
I dislike Brady a lot, btw. In case you couldn't tell by my post history.

Sure do. I know Brady did terrible when he had a poor defense too, like in 2010 when he was unanimous MVP with a pretty poor team. But yea, it is all about stats only, not what makes the most sense to win. Good point though by OP. And if he even wanted to make a decent argument, he should have taken Brees, who will pass Peyton in just about everything, except perhaps interceptions and pizza, though it could be close. Brady on the other hand has about 100 less.

I can't believe I read all of this... It's Brady as #1. It won't change ever or at least for another 25 to 35 years when his level of dominance is matched or beaten. Long term Manning is definitely a great investment, but Brady is hands down a much better investment and the absolute best investment you could make into football cards. Babe Ruth was the Tom Brady of baseball, Michael Jordan was the Tom Brady of basketball, Wayne Gretzky was the Tom Brady of hockey, and on and on... People will be comparing every qb for the next three decades to Brady. My great great great grandkids will know the name Tom Brady. This was settled back when he delivered the best performance I ever saw in Super Bowl 51. And he keeps going back to Super Bowl's!!! What Tom Brady has done with a bunch of no-name receivers and backs in his career is truly the most amazing thing about him, a sixth round draft choice who started his career as a backup has elevated every single teammate he has ever had. Peyton Manning was carried to a championship by a superb Broncos defense, Tom Brady plays on that Broncos team and they don't get crushed in Super Bowl 48.

I thought this debate was settled a few rings ago. I am not a Patriot fan, I love Manning, but I would take Brady any day over him. People forget that Manning had HOF receiver Marvin Harrison from his rookie season to most of his career. He also had Edge, plus Reggie Wayne. Brady had what a few seasons with Randy Moss and other than that a rotating cast of wide receivers? I'm old enough to remember when the Patriots weren't the most hated team in the NFL. They used to be known as the team that lost to the 1985 Bears in the Super Bowl. Look what Brady and Belicheck have done. Manning to me always seemed to play great when everything was going according to plan but when things broke down he didn't play as well. Brady is a better improviser when things break down. And I can't believe I just had to defend Tom Brady.

LOL. Scottie Pippen was the Tom Brady of the NBA. They both have the same number of rings and 1st team all league selections. Michael Jordan was 1st team all NBA 10 times, so he is more like the Jerry Rice of the NBA.

Brady could win the next three MVP's and Superbowls in a row and there will STILL be those who will disagree on his GOAT status to fit their own agenda or just to be contrarian for the sake of argument.

The logic of “You’re not that good if you make it to the big game and lose.” has always been dumb to me. I’ll never understand why some people, and I’m not saying you’re saying this, think that making it to a championship when losing is worse than not making it at all.

That argument only seemed to apply to Lebron in the Jordan debate. It was what was used against him. It is extremely dumb. As a fan I'd love for my team to make it there and as a player I'm sure they do to. Not to mention a lot who get performance bonuses for making it there.

I understand different people have different perspectives.
I just think Jordan is in his own special realm. Unbeaten on the biggest stage and revolutionized professional sports, including pioneering lucrative endorsement deals. It's not like 6 appearances was a small sample size, either. Everyone just knew that when he got there...nobody was beating him, regardless how well the competition played. God tier. Like...there's really no comparison to him and his overall body of work in professional sports.
Just my opinion.

let's take a step back there man... reggie wayne ran the wrong route when manning threw that pick against new orleans....supposed to be an in route where he cuts in front of the linebacker which manning anticipated...instead he took it up field 2-3 more yards. and blaming the seattle game on him is just ridiculous... first play from scrimmage the ball is snapped 5 feet over his head into the end zone... that game was doomed from the start, and seattles defensive line completely dominated denver's oline all game. Nevermind the fact that denver's wide receives could not get open against seattle's amazing secondary
I'm not going to sit here and debate brady and manning because there is no debate, but blaming the super bowl losses on him is absurd. Mine as well blame the eagles super bowl loss on brady then because he fumbled at the end of the game when they had a shot to win

The point of any statement like that is to show how the narratives play for these two players. Example, Brady leaves the field with the lead in his first two SB losses and majority will say he lost the games, basically because he did not blow either Giants team out. But he actually did his job for the most part and put his team in a very good position to win those games. If Brady tossed a return pick late in a SB that lost a game, it would be discussed much differently than the way you just responded to Manning's interception.

Brady started out his career 3-2 in the Bowl. He was well out of the Jordan discussion before he even entered his 6th, 7th, or subsequent appearance.

Yes People forgot all about that guy named Mantle and Ruth, Some Guy named Jordan or something used to be a good basketball player. I heard there used to be some guy named petty or something that could drive fast.
Is that why Jordan made just under $140 Million on his shoes last year, people forgot him and his shoe line?
Does that candy bar Baby Ruth still exist?
Isn't Mantle still one of the Pinnacle cards of all Rookies to locate and his threads are constantly on Blowout?
Brady is still going strong and after this first game of taking the Steelers behind the woodshed, and having what could be a Gronk return, his best and maybe one of NFL's best receiving corp ever?

Don't get me wrong, Jordan is the GOAT of basketball. Miss watching him play. But he also became mortal and fell off a cliff at the same age or prior to other basketball players. Brady is still one of, if not the best qb in the game when considering all intangibles, at an age where no other player in NFL history even had slight success. Guy's a freak.
Hope he stays healthy and makes another run!

For sure, there's no doubting his consistency or longevity. It's unmatched in all of sports. Without a doubt the best qb of this generation, and it's not even close.
But I think there's more parallels to be drawn between Brady and Lebron than Brady and Jordan. Lebron is entering his 17th season and could have averaged a triple double last year. Both players aren't necessarily the top scorers year in and year out, but have the gifted ability to make those around them better, even with inferior talent. It doesn't hurt that he has one of the best, if not the best coach in the history of the game either. Having that kind of stability in your system can only help.
I guess it's hindsight as well, but how many of the players from this era will be all-time greats. Free agency has changed pro sports for good. Dynasties are almost a thing of the past. Jordan was playing against majority of the Top 50 guys in their primes...back when the Knicks, Pacers, Lakers, Pistons, Spurs, Rockets, Utah, and Blazers all had long standing powerhouse teams that would have won if Jordan wasn't there to cockblock the league.

Robert Horry has 7 rings, is he the NBA goat instead of Jordan? When Brady makes is 1st team All Pro for the 7th time, then you argue he is goat. He is competing against Jerry Rice 10 time 1st team all pro and Jim Brown 8 time 1st team all pro in 9 seasons. Your only argument is rings and post season/Super Bowl records for playing in the most games. That is what Yogi Berra did and no one would call him the goat over Babe Ruth.
