Say we take pujols out....
I would say josh Hamilton right now...
When he is healthy that guy hits like no one else....
Shame he lost 5 plus years...
Still he could have 5-6 great year left

If Ripken stayed at SS his whole career, you would have to eat your words.

Id argue that Halladay is better than Lincecum

Pujols. After Pujols(hitters wise) i see a big cluster of guys like votto, cabrera, and hamilton.
The best pitcher seems to be between felix/lincy/and halladay. But arguements can be made for others.

Oh dude, I was being sarcastic. There was a big stupid thread about this a few weeks ago. I know Cal is the better all around player.

I would take ripken also...
He was on some real bad teams
Jeter is great but has been playing with 100 million dollar talent for years
Plus i pick Ripken over jeter on power alone...

I agree. Lincecum is not the pitcher he was in 07/08 anymore... Halladay will CONTINUE to be the best pitcher in the majors this year as well. The only pitcher I can see passing him up is the King of Seattle...

I have to go with poophole. Just a great all around player. For 30 mil a year though I would just buy a like 10,000 hookers and a bunch if Viagra and have at it lol.

He beat halliday and lee

So? Did you not see Halladay's 2 No-Hitters this year? Including one in the playoffs? If I was a manager of a team for a team this year, I'd pitch Halladay over Lincecum anyday (Coming from a Mets Fan)

Best HITTER in the game today? Pujols.
Best PLAYER? Tulowitzki. Premium position? Check. Superior, better than anyone else at his position defense? Check. Clubhouse leader? Check. Top notch offensive force? Check. The guy has zero holes. If I were building a club and could snag one player to be my cornerstone for the next 10 years, it's Troy Tulowitzki.

Right Now
Hitter: Pujols
Pitcher: Halladay
However, if I had to say who was the best player right now in the majors it would be Joe Mauer. Catching is very hard to handle, and he is one of the best defensive catchers in the game. He hits a high average, with good OBP, he may not put up the gaudy numbers that Pujols does but relative to other catchers its amazing what he can do. Pujols can have comparable numbers to some first basemen. Catching wears you down a lot more then first, so to keep up such high numbers in the catching position makes me swing the vote for Mauer with Pujols closely behind.

The only intelligent response in this thread.
Halladay was the best pitcher yesterday. Not today. Pujols was the best offensive/position player yesterday. Today, they're older, slower and with more mileage. Tulo is the best now. Embrace. Feel it. Saturate your organs in it. Marinate in it. Wring out the sweat and quench your thirst on it. Clean your ears with its Q-tip. Appreciate the aroma from its sweet smelling flatulence.

Hmm lets see. Uh idk
MIGUEL CABRERA!!!!!!!!

Cabera maybe could fill in as best hitter... But his defense SUCKS, terrible, one of the worst fielders in the game. No way could be the best player in the game. He might as well be a DH.

I agree that I'd take Tulo over Pujols were I building a club from scratch. However, I still think that Pujols is the premium talent in the bigs today (and yesterday). He will probably hold down that title for another couple of years.
That being said, I'd never build a club around a firstbaseman. You build up the middle. So I'm taking a C, 2B, SS or maybe a CF. Hamilton is too old to build around as a CF.
SS -- Tulo is the choice here (mainly because Hanley fields with a US Steel brand glove).
2B -- I'd be hard pressed to choose between Cano and Utley, but forced to choose, I choose Utley.
C -- Mauer. No choice.
All that being said, the weak point for Tulo is durability. He has missed time in 2 of the last 4 seasons. (I'm assuming 2008 was injury -- did he get sent down?) Utley hurt himself last year.
I'd take Mauer. If I'm building, I'm going to have a young pitching staff. I want a rock solid catcher who can field and call a game behind the plate. The stick doesn't hurt either.
(If this was fantasy baseball, and I was filling my utility spot, I'd take Pujols)

Didn't realize that Utley was that old (32) -- age aside, I'd take Utley. Cano is way younger however.

HOw can you say that he makes extremely smart plays and could easily win a gold glove. Remember this is only his 4th year at first. He was a dynomite thirdbasemen as well

Some things age like fine wine. Both Hallady and Pujols have only gotten better. I'm sure both are nearing the peak of the mountain, but I don't think they'll be dropping off a cliff anytime soon.
Is Tulo one of the best? Sure. Is he THE best? Nope.
I'm excited to see what kind of season Carl Crawford will put together in Boston this year. I've always liked the guy, and I think he'll be putting up some bigger numbers.

I have a sneaking suspicion that he is going to have a monster year in that lineup/stadium. Less stolen bases, b/c I doubt he will run as much with AGon and Youk etc hitting behind him - but I am guessing 100+ runs scored, 20+ homers and .315-.325 average. Something like that.
