View Full Version : “Private listing” eBay auction - any legitimate reason?

I’m watching an auction ending tonight that I swear used to not be a “private listing”. But now it is.

Seller has >10,000 reviews at 100% positive.

I normally like to observe auction behavior before I bid, for maybe obvious reasons.

Are there legitimate cases a seller would make an auction “private listing”? Or should this be a big red flag causing me to stay away?

I would stay away. I don't know of any good reason to have something listed as private. Especially now that ebay protects all the buyers identities now.

This is my concern :(

One of the primary reasons (at least initially) was to hide "shill bidding."

Yep - what I normally want to observe, first ;)

This private listing makes that hard

The other reason was to stop viewers from warning bidders that they are bidding on a forged item.

Fun! This one unlikely to be forged

Unless it is an incredibly rare and valuable item, then there is no reason to shield identity other than for some degree of shady purpose.

No one has given me a reasonable answer. "My customers have asked me for it" is complete horse poo.

It certainly is.

Well I bought the card anyway, but worry I may have paid a little more than I might have otherwise. Oh well, was a Devers for my PC, so guess I'll eat it. Won't see this card come up again.

Maybe if the card is worth several grand or more, but otherwise it’s just shenanigans.

I wish I could say I compete on cards at that level ;)
