I think they are going to groom him for the starting 5. He has the potential to become a real defensive stopper like Bill Russell and if his offense comes along it’ll be even more scarier.

I didn’t see today’s game.. it’s from watching him last year and this year.. he just has this defensive force that impresses me and makes me think he has a lot of potential on that end. I’m rarely here and I’m bored so just figured I’d talk about a player that I like so I made this thread.

Fun fact: back then there was talk about tall players playing being "unfair" and even discussion about banning players over a certain height. Bill Russel's declared height of 6'9 is both in socks (whereas most measurements from the late 90 up until now when we're starting to change back are with shoes) and he rounded down as he didn't want to seem tall. Bill Russell is actually closer to 6'11 and more of a Durant sized player.

I’d love to hear you explain my knowledge of his game. I have also seen at least 90% of the NBA minutes Robert Williams has played as I watch ever Celtics game. The two players aren’t even on the same stratosphere.

On a side note of you’d like some insight I’d highly recommend watching game 7 of the 1969 NBA Finals. It’s available on YouTube. I’d also recommend the “Bill Russell, My Life, My Way” documentary. Spend 90 or so minutes watching those two videos and let me know if you still feel your take is valid.

Nice i'll admit i didn't read the entire thread. Yeah i mean he's had some flashes. He had one game where he had like 5 or 6 blocks. He is exactly what they need if he could stay on the court. He's a big body that's very athletic and can be an inside presence on defense and offense. I don't know enough about his injury though. That sounds bad for someone who's known for jumping high and blocking shots and being a rather large man. I hope it's completely healed and not a lingering problem. We'll see. They could definitely use him off the bench. Theis has been pretty good this year though. His stats don't jump out at you but he was very solid. I don't see Williams taking his job anytime soon unless he plays out of this world.

Absolutely. There was a game where he had 3 consecutive blocks and the 3rd one was on a guard shooting a 3. Hr recovered quicker than anyone could imagine and blocked the shot. Then the team recovered the ball and had an easy score. The dude is talented and can be a factor on the team. As a fan I’m fascinated by him, as a collector I’ve grabbed a few of his cards for fun. Do I think he’s the next great Celtic? Absolutely not. He will be lucky to have a 10 year career in the NBA.

Celtics are overflowing with young players. I guess that's a good problem to have i wish one of them would emerge as a great player though. I feel like they have 5 late first round picks on their bench. It will give them depth as they gain more experience. It would be nice if they could package some of the excess for one good center though. Or if Williams could become that player they need. He has raw potential. Will he ever emerge as a 15-20 PPG and 10 REB guy though? That is what they need. That remains to be seen. I wish him the best of luck.

Theis hasn’t looked great because he’s not fully back to 100% after his knee surgery and is playing on a minutes restriction. He’s also playing out of position at the 4 being asked to take on quicker players than he would normally see from the 5. Put Thompson or Rob Williams in that same role and they’d be dealing with the same problem.
I’m a fan of Rob Williams too and I definitely want to see him get more minutes on the floor especially with Payton Pritchard,they’ve formed a solid connection on offense.

williams is the big body they need and he's helping a lot. Thats part of the reason they're playing so well. He's a good shot blocker and rim protector is what they needed. That's why they're playing so well. He will help them a lot if he can stay healthy.

Apparently he has an issue with his hip that’s lingering and they are limiting mins. Doesn’t sound great. They’re a different team with him out there offensively. The attention is often elsewhere and it’s a free run to the rim
