“Patriots’ advance scout was not filming but being filmed, per a league source. He was being filmed for a feature the team produced called, ‘Do Your Job.’ The video crew was credentialed by the Browns to shoot video in the press box and their PR person was aware, per the source.”

So it's not the Bengals? It's the Browns? Which crap team is it?

No, the Browns said it was fine. The Bengals, who the Pats happen to play this week, did not know or ok it.

This supposedly happened during the Browns-Bengals game. Why the Patriots had a rep there filming a "Do your Job" segment I have no idea.

While I don’t think there’s likely anything to this accusation, if you’ve watched Brady and the Pats offense lately, they haven’t had an easy time beating people with their eyes open. That offense is a disaster.

Patriots' employees filming an advance scout doing his/her job. Wonder what an advance scout does?:coffee::coffee:

I’m gonna go with ToneDeafGate.
Only a tone deaf organization, with a tone deaf owner and tone deaf ultra coach/GM with a history of illegally taping teams, would send a representative of their organization into another teams facility to videotape said representative while a game is going on against a team they will be playing the following week.
Fans may say it’s simply so absurd it can’t be true. I say they are the NFLs versions of the wet bandits.

Some of the wording in the statement they put out is comical.i mean unintended oversight that You asked the browns for credentials but forgot to inform the league and the team we play next week that we would have a film crew there
They also admit that the film crew broke nfl policy but it was a mistake.
At least as a whole the statement basically admits they did something wrong

I agree with you about their statement , thought it was trash.
but I dont see any reason or gain for BB/ the actual team by recording the Bengals sideline. If there isn't any benefit, why do it?
@geoffschwartz
Again, I’m not sure what the Patriots were to gain from video taping the Bengals unless they have audio of them talking about individual plays as they make adjustments on the sidelines. There are no signals anymore.
@ZachSDunn
This was my whole response to this.... In the NFL, only hand signals you can get stuff from is the QB or DB’s during checks. You can get those on the coaches film. NFL isn’t college where plays are signaled in.

You all better just start dumping your Brady cards to me at a deeply discounted rate. Once him and Belichick retire the real truth will come out. They will have to forfeit all of their rings, Belichick and Brady both will be banned from the Hall of Fame, Gisele will seek out a divorce, etc. His cards will be worth nothing.

etc.
Nobody cares though, when a Bills guy runs to read a play sheet.
Nobody cares though, when fake stories goes viral to get AB off the team.
Nobody cares though, when a fan shines a lazer in Brady's eyes during the AFC championship game.

You are going to get waxed in the playoffs this year by KC or Baltimore.
Make no mistake about it. And hopefully it is going to happen in Gillette Stadium like it did in game 7 at home for the Bruins in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Not only this, but people really think they they will automatically go back to losing seasons after Brady.
As long as Belichick is there, winning seasons will remain.
Even if Belichick leaves, I doubt there will be much trouble. Josh McDaniels could just take over and continue to lead the division.

I understand that. In the past I knew the Pats would be right there in the end. I did not like it but I was well aware of it.
I honestly am not trying to break the chops of any Patriots fans. My two observations watching them this year is why I think the run may be coming to an end soon.
#1-It has to end at some point. It cant go on forever.
#2-This one is much more relevant, football wise, then #1 is. I have been watching football a long time. Yes, I have been wrong many, many, many times over the years.
But the Pats look very slow to me on offense. It just does not look like it used to.
I dont like the Pats but over the years I cant deny that they were great and looked like a well oiled machine.
I am just not seeing it this year.
Maybe their defense will bail them out. Thay are really good on the D side of the ball.
Anything can happen. I just dont like their chances this year.
If Lamar and Mahomes were not around I would say maybe. Barring a massive injury by one or both of them, and I dont think anyone wants to see that, I just cant see NE getting by them.
But NE has proved me wrong many times over the years, so we shall see.
Its going to be fun and interesting to watch. Thats the best part. I love football this time of year.

I wish I had a dollar for every time someone predicted the end of the dynasty and another 50 cents for every time they said “yeah I know we said this before, but this year it’s different..!!”
:coffee::coffee::coffee::coffee::popcorn::popcorn::popcorn::popcorn:
According to a report from ESPN's Diana Russini, the videographer identified himself as an employee of Robert Kraft, had the camera focused on the Bengals sideline for the first quarter, and when confronted by Bengals security, asked if the situation could be forgotten if the footage was deleted.
The details in Russini's report has striking similarities to accusations of how the Patriots filmed opposing teams during what became known as "Spygate."
The NFL now has the tape. Its contents are unknown at this time.
Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.
The NFL is investigating the New England Patriots after an unusual situation took place during the Cincinnati Bengals' Week 14 game versus the Cleveland Browns.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Patriots had an advance scout at the game filming a feature titled "Do Your Job" that the team produces. The series covers a day in the life of different members of the Patriots organization. Schefter added that the Browns credentialed the video crew.
According to multiple reports, a Bengals official saw the video being taped and alerted Bengals security, who then confiscated the tape. The NFL has the tape, and it is unknown what's on it. Bengals coach Zac Taylor told reporters on Monday that he was aware of a situation that took place but would not comment on it.
The Patriots play the Bengals in Week 15 in Cincinnati.
ESPN's Diana Russini reported some eyebrow-raising details from the confrontation between the Bengals official, Bengals security, and the Patriots crew.
According to Russini, the cameraman in the box identified himself as an employee of Robert Kraft. A source at the scene told her the camera was focused on the Bengals' sideline for the first quarter. A source also told Russini that the pro scout allegedly being featured in "Do Your Job" was interviewed before the game but was not interviewed once the game began.
According to Russini, when Bengals security arrived to interview the Kraft cameraman, the cameraman "asked if they could just delete the footage, and it all be forgotten."
According to Russini, the Patriots no longer have the tape, and the Bengals would not release the tape to ESPN.
Similarities to "Spygate"
The situation bears striking similarities to how the Patriots filmed opposing teams during the "Spygate" scandal.
ESPN's Don Van Natta and Seth Wickersham reported in 2015 that the Patriots would send scouts to opponents' games undercover as media members. They would get media credentials listed under "Patriots TV" or "Kraft Productions" and were prepared with excuses for what to say they were filming if security asked.
Van Natta and Wickersham wrote in 2015: "The videographers also were provided with excuses for what to tell NFL security if asked what they were doing: Tell them you're filming the quarterbacks. Or the kickers. Or footage for a team show."

There is more coverage of the extracurricular activity in the NFL than the actual games.
I seriously doubt the Patriots were filming that crappy team to try getting an edge.

As a Pats fan, this pisses me off.
scenario #1: It really is a legitimate mistake: Still makes the Patriots look bad/like cheaters and fuels the haters.
scenario #2: They really were taping the Bengals: makes the Patriots look worse/like cheaters and continues to fuel the haters.
regardless, it bugs me the Pats would even put themselves in this type of position after all that's transpired in the past.

It's very simple to understand why the Bengals.
A) The AFC East is still up for grabs, so even though they're a 1-12 team, it's still a very important game for the Patriots, and one they're not used to having this late in the season.
B) Zac Taylor is a coach they've never faced before, so getting extra footage of him and his crew is a huge advantage.
C) Zac Taylor is a disciple of Sean McVay, so they're potentially getting extra info incase of another Rams matchup
D) It being "just the Bengals" makes it a lot easier to write off and laugh about rather than being taken seriously.

Without coming off as anti-Patriots or a Patriots-homer, you managed to sum it up perfectly. Well done!

You’re phenomenally ignorant of the NFL. That call was called many times. It was even called *against* the Patriots earlier that season in a game against the Jets.
The only thing is it didn’t make national headlines when it happened in a regular season game. So people like you ignorantly think something unusual went on when they called it in the playoffs.

Can we all just admit that people just hate the Patriots because of their success and they will do anything to bring them down? Nobody cares unless it's the Patriots. A lot of minor things get blown up into big issues just because it's the Patriots.
Example 1) Steelers deflate gate.
No investigation
Nobody cares
Media did not care to blow up the story
The NFL quickly ended it
Example 2) Patriots deflate gate.
Years of investigation
Years of court battles
Suspended QB
Fines
Loss of draft picks
Still won the super bowl
I'm so sick of the witch hunts that occur every single year. Sometimes, there are multiple witch hunts in just one year alone. For example, earlier in the season, it was "The Patriots colluded to get AB." Now, it's "They recorded a 1-12 team!"
The Patriots are found guilty as soon as the media and haters pick up a whiff of something involving the Patriots.
Nobody cares though, if Brady gets a laser shined in his face all day at the AFC game and nobody cares when other teams do the same #@#@#@#@. I'm so fed up with how much attention the Patriots get just from the most ridiculous #@#@#@#@.

You forgot to mention that Deflategate, at worst, was a 25k equipment violation according to the rules, and that's only if the party was found guilty of the incident, of which there was NEVER any hard evidence according to the Mitchell report. Brady was penalized for not cooperating with the investigation, not for deflating the balls. This was the official ruling. Would you trust turning over your phone with all your private information to Goodell's team when they ALREADY had full transcripts of all the text communications? It's not like they would "leak" anything out, would they? The other owners were still pissed about SpyGate and wanted to burn the Pats for something (anything) to make up for it.

It was not called MANY times. The Jet game you referred was the only time it was ever call before the “tuck rule game”. I was wrong about the other two times it was called. My favorite is when the Carolina Panthers got caught on LIVE TV illegally heating their footballs in Minnesota. As soon as I saw that I laughed and said “That’s illegal.” It was, in short, an equipment violation.

Patriots fans simply don't get it. It's not the football team that is the reason for 'pitchforks'. Most fans of other teams actually respect and appreciate what the organization, Brady and Belichick has accomplished over the last 17 years.
So if it's not the team, Brady or Belichick - what or WHOM do you think is the reason for the 'hate' as you guys like to put it? One guess (and it's not Old Handjob Krafty either) and if you can't get it, then Pats FANS are clueless.

Filming a team's sideline is illegal. I mean it's pretty cut and dry. At this point, the Patriots should be aware of this rule. Not even taking into account the fact that filming the opposing team's sideline for 8 minutes straight has nothing to do with a documentary on an advanced scout and the fact that when caught the guy wanted the tapes destroyed.

Plus, we also didn't have anything to do with it, it was an independent group not at all following any orders from us," that one?

Or the team employee hoping that the footage could be erased and forgotten about, again?
Definitely sounds like things you'd do when it's no big deal.
The New England Patriots are that board member that has awesome cards that you're willing to overpay for, but is constantly scamming and somehow has an excuse for it every time they get called out, and even though only the most ardent of fans are buying it, they still manage to get away with it.

The solution to this whole thing is so obvious that even the NFL is smart enough to figure it out:
We know the Patriots got credentials from the home team (Cleveland Browns). So ask every other team that the Patriots sent their advance scout to if they also had a request for cameraman credentials. If this is truly an isolated incident, then only a total moron would think the Patriots would be so afraid of Cincinnati that they did this for them but not, like, for KC and Baltimore and Houston. But if it is something they’ve done 5, 6, 7 times already this season, then there’s probably something to the story.

Of course it matters. The Commissioner has to levy a punishment and there are light years of difference between doing every week to every team in order to gain a competitive advantage in the following week's game versus some clueless independent contractor who really was just filming a documentary, with footage that was not going to be viewed by football ops.
That, my ignorant friend, is the difference between losing a 7th round pick versus losing a 1st rounder.

And here we go again. You keep taking in circles. It doesn’t matter what the intent was. They got caught, taping a teams sideline - unabated for 8 minutes mind you - again. Whether it was intentional or an oopsie, should be of no concern. You can’t do it. Just like you can’t speed, or kill your girlfriend. And if you do it twice, the punishment adds up.

Jeremynick: It's totally about intent. Seems quite obvious.
After the NFL investigates, if it's proven the film crew was directed to tape the Bengals sideline for scouting purposes yes, throw the book at the Pats.

There is no intent in the NFL rule. You are adding it in to justify.
The rule is you are not allowed to tape for any reason. They got caught taping. Intent does not matter. Especially considering filming a teams sideline for 8 minutes has nothing to do with a scouting documentary. But that point is superfluous. The rule does not mention intent at all.

It's not about justifying anything. This is where you and I differ.
If they taped the sidelines and picked up absolutely nothing but players stretching and coaches standing around with clipboards---no big deal. What's the intent? (maybe it really was for a documentary)
If they taped the sidelines while different plays/formations are being run in an actual practice---intent (spying) is clearly there: big deal.
Because if they truly were intending to tape/spy on the Bengals you would think it would be during an part of practice where they could actually see formations/down situations.
I'm not here to argue, but it's two totally different issues as far as I'm concerned. Maybe the NFL is that rigid? No idea. I do agree: no part of practice should be taped, but I would put the hammer down on the Pats if that 8 minute tape showed the Bengals practicing all their third down formations.

I am discussing it rationally. I am trying to explain to your simple mind that there are varying degrees of infractions. (And if you can handle a personal insult then maybe you shouldn’t have started crap by throwing one out, little girl)
And yes, of course it matters what the intent was. On what planet are you living where intent doesn’t matter in such cases?
The only one talking in circles is you. You keep saying “they broke a rule”. Considering they *admitted* violating league policy, you’re not really contributing much.
Now do you have anything intelligent or insightful to say on the matter, little girl? Or are you just going to continue to parrot your “they broke a rule!” mantra?

So we need to determine if it is indeed a second time, even though they already admitted doing it. Then you argue that I’m talking in circles and in the same breath say that I’m saying the same thing again and again.
I shouldn’t have to point the obvious out here but I will say you’re like a Mutt chasing it’s tail, both in the amount of circles you are making here and your level of general intelligence.

So we need to determine if it is indeed a second time, even though they already admitted doing it. It’s obvious you’re not intelligent enough to understand this subject matter at hand. They admitted violating league policy, but neither I nor the league share your ignorant stance that “filming is filming.” This isn’t a second offense if it was not something being used by football ops in order to gain a competitive advantage. Newsflash: That’s the key issue at hand, little girl. So yes, even though a league policy was broken, we need to determine if it was a second offense or if this is something different from before.
Despite your desperate attempts to claim otherwise, to every single intelligent, thinking individual, the context and intent matters. Intelligent people see a difference between an independent contractor taking b-roll footage that barely sees the light of day versus a cameraman providing video to the coaching staff for dissection and analysis of an upcoming opponent.
Let go of the pain, my friend. We know you cried yourself to sleep all those times the Patriots took you out of the playoffs. We know how angry and bitter you were when they hoisted Lombardi after Lombardi. Just don’t take it so seriously and don’t get so mad.

Context matters when you want to rationalize the action. Context, intent or whatever you want to define it as this post is not part of the NFL rules. This is the second time they been caught doing this, there is no rational explanation for why they were videotaping a teams sideline for 8 minutes and, irregardless, they and the videographer knew it was illegal. “Can’t we just delete these and act like it never happened”. So despite the fact that you want deflect (you hate the Patriots) or rationalize (it’s only a problem if we know exactly why they did it) or just talk in circles (we don’t know if they actually did it, they said they did it), it boils down to what they did is against the rules and it’s the second time they broke said rule. Punish them and move on.

Could you please quote the relevant rule? Because I don’t think what you’re saying is true. So please support your claim, which you’ve made several times, about what the rules *actually* say.
Either show the rule or admit you’re just making things up out of thin air.

Anyhow, it seems the narrative is Everyone Does It. Yet, all I’ve heard so far is that two teams in the last ten years got caught that aren’t the Patriots and one of those team was run by Belichick’s right hand man. While people are saying it makes no sense to film a 1-XX team, it is possible the Patriots want to lock in home field advantage through the playoffs and want to win every game possible.
As well to the people saying, " what is there to see on the sidelines they send in signals via radio", let's think about this, film the sidelines and game, sync clocks with someone intercepting the radio transmissions. I am sure they are not scrambled or encrypted.

Why does it matter? Pick a time frame you are comfortable with if for some odd reason 5 years isn't your flavor of coffee.
I think what matters is what's on that 8 minute tape.
Like I said earlier, if it's a bunch of players stretching and coaches twirling their whistles----No biggie.
If the tape shows the Bengals in actual game formations and practicing plays ---then Goodell should throw the book at the Pats.

If I read the report right it was during the game and just the sidelines, coaches and players going on/off the field for 8 minutes.

Fine but remember, the success of the Patriots is God's will. Our glory is preordained. To speak out against our success is to go against God.

Brilliant analysis.

yep and drew bledsoe's injury was an act of God. He had a plan for Tommy and it wasn't for him to sit on the bench for several years before he would get his chance.

They’re heavily encrypted.
Except when opposing teams get the local radio stations. Somehow those aren’t so heavily encrypted.

You leave Tommy alone you bully!
From a pure optics perspective, this will age like milk.
No team has ever been hated more then the patriots. And personally I love it!!
Look at my avatar, now shut your gormless internet sound hole. No one will achieve the polarization of the Dallas Cowboys. Period.
Irrespective, or regardless, not both.

Umm... No.
If this was the Cowboys that did something like this, the thread would have been done by page 4, tops.
The Cowboys are no longer polarizing, just pathetic.

What crypto are they using genius?now now... no need to get all pissy just because I called you out for having no idea what you are talking about. It’s not my fault you showed your own cluelessness when you said “I am sure they are not scrambled or encrypted”.
Article after article after article talks about how the coach headset communications are encrypted, as are the helmet communications to talk to the QB or defensive captain. One of the best quotes I saw was:
“ The NFL has said there are some 268 million different military-grade encryption codes protecting the frequencies. And while security is strict, teams also do their due diligence to protect transmissions.”
