Clinton Portis, Joe Horn among 12 ex-NFL players charged with defrauding NFL healthcare program (https://sports.yahoo.com/clinton-portis-joe-horn-among-12-ex-nfl-players-charged-with-defrauding-nfl-healthcare-program-162644073.html)
Ten ex-NFL players were charged in a scheme that allegedly defrauded the Gene Upshaw NFL Player Health Reimbursement Account of nearly $4 million, the U.S. Justice Department announced on Thursday.
Clinton Portis, Carlos Rogers, Robert McCune, John Eubanks, Tamarick Vanover, Ceandris Brown, James Butler, Frederick Bennett, Etric Pruitt and Correll Buckhalter were charged in two separate indictments.
The Washington Post reported that Joe Horn and Reche Caldwell will also be charged.
According to the indictment, the scheme allegedly operated by submitting false claims to the reimbursement account for expensive medical equipment that was never purchased. The ringleaders would find eligible players and offer to submit claims for them, and then fill out fraudulent claims for expensive medical equipment like hyperbaric oxygen chambers, ultrasound machines that are typically used on pregnant women, and electromagnetic therapy devices used on horses.
They would obtain fabricated support documents such as invoices, and letters or prescriptions from medical providers, and then submit the claims. In exchange for obtaining the false documentation and submitting the fraudulent claims, the ringleaders allegedly received “kickbacks” and bribes for as much as $10,000.
The claims were around $40,000 to $50,000 each, and were submitted between June 2017 and December 2018. According to the indictment, the players submitted $3.9 million in false claims, of which $3.4 million was paid out.
The Gene Upshaw NFL Player Health Reimbursement Account is meant to cover medical expenses for former NFL players after their NFL veterans insurance runs out.
“Ten former NFL players allegedly committed a brazen, multimillion dollar fraud on a health care plan meant to help their former teammates and other retired players pay legitimate, out-of-pocket medical expenses,” assistant attorney general Brian Benczkowski said in a statement on Thursday, via the Washington Post. “Today’s indictments underscore that whoever you are, if you loot health care programs to line your own pockets, you will be held accountable by the Department of Justice.”

What is really sad - Seau, Webster, Duerson and many more people in the NFL had to suffer when it was known that the equipment wasn't protecting these players/people.
These are the people we should remember.

How can you watch football and not know who Tamarick Vanover is? Unless, of course, you were 12 when he played in the 90's. Went to FSU and then played for the Chiefs, I believe, and was a fast dude but had off field issues. Not surprised he's on this list of crooks.

Maybe this story will inspire whomever is in possession of the few pieces of the 2005 Leaf Certified Materials Clinton Portis rainbow I am still missing to list them. I'm in too deep at this point to let a little insurance fraud get in the way of trying to finish it.

JOE HORN FACING 10 YEARS BEHIND BARS...After Pleading Guilty To NFL Health Care Fraud (https://www.tmz.com/2019/12/20/joe-horn-guilty-plea-new-orleans-saints-prison-fraud-health-care/)
Joe Horn is facing 10 YEARS in prison after the ex-NFL star just pled guilty to scamming the NFL's retired player health care plan out of nearly $150,000.
The former New Orleans Saint was one of several ex-NFL players -- including Clinton Portis -- who was charged by federal prosecutors earlier this month with defrauding the Gene Upshaw NFL Player Health Reimbursement Account Plan.
Officials say Horn, along with 10 other ex-NFLers, sought reimbursements for things like expensive medical equipment and prescriptions that they never bought in the first place.
But, instead of fighting the case in court, 47-year-old Horn agreed to plead guilty on Thursday to one charge of conspiracy to commit health care fraud.
According to court docs obtained by TMZ Sports, the charge carries a sentence of up to 10 YEARS behind bars ... as well as fine of up to $250,000 -- plus probation.
But, it seems Horn took the plea deal with the hopes a judge will take it easy on him at his sentencing hearing later next year.
As for the details of the plea agreement -- according to the docs, Horn admitted to submitting two false claims that totaled up to $149,775 ... and will have to pay that back.
Horn is one of the greatest Saints of all-time ... logging 7,865 receiving yards and 51 receiving TDs in his 7 years in a New Orleans uniform.

Sigh, this just made me spend the past hour reading Clinton Portis' story. Sad sad indeed.
I remember when Vick got arrested he said it wasn’t a big deal and he should be allowed to do whatever he wants with those dogs since he owns them and it’s his property. He’s scum and deserves his sad sad broke life.

Portis pleaded guilty along with 2 others. Gets sentances in Jan. Given the guilty plea prob some sort of deal on the back end like house arrest for a few years is my best guess. Crazy the amount of money went into the fraud

Clinton Portis, other ex-NFL players plead guilty to defrauding league healthcare program (https://sports.yahoo.com/clinton-portis-other-ex-nfl-players-plead-guilty-fraud-healthcare-program-234943140.html)
Former Denver Broncos and Washington Football Team star Clinton Portis is among the latest batch of former NFL players who have pleaded guilty to defrauding a league healthcare program, according to the Associated Press.
Portis, Tamarick Vanover and Robert McCune all reportedly admitted to defrauding the Gene Upshaw NFL Player Health Reimbursement Account Plan, a program set up to reimburse up to $350,000 in medical expenses for retired players and their families.
McCune, who played as a linebacker for Washington, the Miami Dolphins and the Baltimore Ravens between 2005 and 2008, is facing the most serious charges of the group by far. The U.S. Department of Justice reportedly alleged he orchestrated the scheme that led to approximately $2.9 million in fraudulent claims.
He is reportedly facing life in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and health care fraud, 13 counts of health care fraud, 11 counts of wire fraud and three counts of aggravated identity theft. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 19.
Portis and Vanover reportedly pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit health care fraud and could face up to 10 years in prison. Court documents reportedly indicate Portis was responsible for nearly $100,000 in claims and Vanover nearly $160,000. Portis scheduled for sentencing on Jan. 6 and Vanover on Jan. 22.
What Clinton Portis and other ex-NFL players allegedly did
In the original indictment, the trio was part of a group of 12 players accused of submitting false claims for reimbursement for expensive medical equipment that was never purchased, such as hyperbaric oxygen chambers, ultrasound machines that are typically used on pregnant women, and electromagnetic therapy devices used on horses.
The ringleaders would allegedly find ex-players eligible for the program and offer to submit claims, fabricating documents and prescriptions in exchange for kickbacks.
Claims would allegedly be for about $40,000 to $50,000 and were submitted between June 2017 and Dec. 2018, eventually adding up to millions of dollars in fraud.
In addition to the three players who pleaded guilty on Tuesday, 12 other players, including former Pro Bowl wide receiver Joe Horn, have been charged and pleaded guilty.

Portis made tens of millions of dollars playing football. He's going to go to jail for 6 months over $100k. What a moron.
More bad news related to the Washington franchise. What a journey.
