UPS & FedEx adding $24 fees on packages 50+ pounds or more. [wsj paywall]

FedEx Corp. and United Parcel Service Inc. are escalating their war on bulky items by levying $24 fees on packages weighing more than 50 pounds.

Previously, packages weighing more than 70 pounds triggered additional handling surcharges.

The changes went into effect at UPS on Dec. 29. FedEx’s new rates start Jan. 6.

Just shipped something out that was just over 50 lbs yesterday via Fed Ex. This is the first I heard about this. Can't read the article, I am assuming its actual weight and not the dimensional weight?
