eBay is all I’ve ever used. I keep hearing a lot of buying and selling on Instagram. Can someone explain the best way to search and connect
To the right alternative marketplaces ?

On Facebook, you need to try and get in some good basketball card groups. I would suggest:
NBA HOT SPOT WORLDWIDE trade & sell cards
SHOWCASE Basketball Cards-Buy, Sell, Trade.
NBA - Nothing But Net - Basketball Cards
Instagram is much tougher. You just have to start following good accounts and networking with people that can help you find what you want. Post cards that fit your collection and people that have similar cards will likely find you over time. Searching on Instagram is near impossible.

Instagram: You can search hash tags for cards (players, sets, card types, etc.). This can lead you to some great accounts. Using hash tags will also get you and your posts found by others. You can search for users whose handles contain key words you're interested in (your PC player's name or nickname for example): type a name/word in an accounts search and IG will give you suggestions. You can also search the friends/connections of good accounts to find other worthwhile ones. Buying and selling is not regulated on Instagram, so you really need to evaluate accounts and people carefully. Private messaging someone and getting to know them goes a long way. And it never hurts to ask questions respectfully! You can also always offer to pay for the PayPal fees so you can be covered through a goods/services payment. It's important to lay down clear terms and expectations (for example, I always expect tracking). There are many treasures out there if you take time to hunt creatively, and I've made some truly amazing friends on Instagram since starting my account. All the best!

Social media can provide incremental opportunities to buy/sell/trade, but do know it'll take a good amount time to build out your profile, presence, network, etc., before it picks up.
IG specifically is built more as a show-off platform and less a marketplace, so it's pretty difficult to start. Demographically also, it lends itself more towards the immature, irrational, inexperienced, so DMs can be quite irritating to deal with, but there are still reputable people on there too. As stated, it's hashtag-drive; a few helpful hobby-specific hashtags to find and start following people with (and also to tag your posts so that others can 'follow' you):
#whodoyoucollect
#thehobby
#bowmanchrome
#sportscardsforsale
Facebook groups are more marketplace-driven, but the best groups are vouch-only and are private (so unsearchable even if group name is known). Join a few of the better known public groups to get a start and focus on connecting with like-minded collectors on FB, IG, here, and dealers at shows. It will take time to really get traction to leverage that to ultimately get accepted to the best groups, but it can be done.

networking
network
This is the key with Instagram. Build a network of people you trust and knows the types of things collect and are looking for. Those people will direct you to cards and people they know.
Be wary of people you don't know or someone you know doesn't know. And take extra precautions in dealing with them. I've done a large number of deals on Instagram now - much more than on blowout. And only really had one issue (he turned out to be a 12 year old who didn't have permission to spend his money).
You'll find the bigger your network gets and the more actively you involve yourself in it the more people will actually approach you to trade/buy/sell.

Nice post OP. I need to get into the new Century and use these avenues for trading/buying/selling too.

Find a few good hobby accounts on Instagram to follow, and then look at their followers and who they're following for good content, networking, and sales. I do a bit of commerce on IG, and it's been fun and worth my time.

I can refer a few favorite accounts to you if you'd like as well. Good luck!

Just to echo what everyone has mentioned here, on IG it’s just a matter of getting your name known, and who you collect. Start following people- there’s a thread on blowout with a ton of user names - and make sure you interact. I haven’t been on it very long and have already been fortunate enough to meet some great collectors who have steered me to perfect cards.

No problem. I just got into soccer cards and there is not a ton being shown off on Instagram. One day decided to search that hashtag and found a small group of soccer collectors using that - good luck on picking up a Messi soon :)!

Are SHOWCASE or Nothing But Net private/hidden? I can't find them on FB to request to join. Thanks!

These are two accounts I follow and break with, local here to AZ, but they do ship nationwide. Very cool guys who answer all questions and break pretty often for reasonable prices.
