View Full Version : Best Tom Brady card to buy for $5000?

Recently sold off a big card, looking to put the funds into a Brady. To me, $5000 is a lot, so I have to keep the investment side of things into consideration when deciding what card to go with. It can’t be a card that has a risky or poor upside in the future. So my question is, what is the safest card to get for $5000 with the most upside? Thank you for your opinions. The more info I get, the better decision I will make.

When it comes to base cards, I like the Spx. Always felt this card should be more popular than what it is, but even so, it's proven to be the #3 or #4 rookie to get over the last two decades.

I want to get some nice Brady this year, but to be honest I'm dreading the amount of research I'll need to do in order to feel comfortable. There is SO MUCH altered Tom Brady stuff out there, it's ridiculous.

At around $5k, I'd grab the Crown Royale Auto RC. Really just one edge for Evan Mathis to trim. On card auto. No Pats uni, but that (to me) is the only drawback. Not an easy 10, but easy enough that you can sneak in under the $5k for one.
Just three options for an auto'd base RC in an NFL set and the other two will be over budget. If you hate auto's, apologies.

I am not a huge RC fan (except for the RC's with autos on them). Just overpriced IMHO. I know I am in the minority but I'd rather get an on-card auto or 1/1 patch than a corresponding RC. Spectra Super Bowl Champ with Inscription comes to mind.
That aside, if I had to recommend an RC at that price point, I'd go with the SPX.

I’ve always liked the SPX as well. Nice design, fairy limited run to 1350. There was a nice BGS 9.5 that ended last night at $2,900 with subs 10, 9.5, 9.5, 9.5, so we’ll within your range. Only drawback is not in Pats uniform, otherwise a winner.
I also like Leaf Limited, very short run to 350, nice design, Pats uni, and universally recognized as a high end card. Not that many nice examples on EBay at any given time, so may take a little longer to find the right one to buy, and also to find the right buyer on the backend when you sell it.

if that's the case, and you can't find the Contenders at $5000, then you're next best best is the SP Authentic, hands down.

i don't believe it's ever lost value, and i doubt ever will, especially with the folks that cannot afford his Contenders card.
thing is, there are a lot of high dollar value Brady rookies, but do you want to buy one of his top 2-3, or one of his top 10-15?
i know some are posting about this SPX card, but honestly, i never liked that card. There's just something about it, never liked it. His SP Authentic though, hands down, one of the prettiest rookies he has, a simple yet cool design.
but that's me.

I was recently talking about the SPx because I also like it.
Its got that undeniable UpperDeck printing, and the premium ivory white stock with a rather simple, but stylish design and its serial numbered.
SPA is also a good choice, but unless you purchase a lower grade copy, youre paying more than 5k.
Leaf limited is also a good choice IMO. Serial'd to 350 and condition sensitive, Patriots uni, but again, with you only having 5k to play with, youll have to buy a lower graded copy. High grade copies are very close to 5, or just over due to scarcity and condition sensitive attributes.
Bowman Chrome is popular, but theres a million of them, theyre ugly IMO, and not serial'd, but hes in his Pats uni and available in quantity.
You can get a BGS gem 9.5 SPx for 4k though..
I do not ever recommend buying a raw copy of anything 2000 Brady, unless youre damn sure you know what youre looking at.
Theres several more releases, but the ones above are primarily the top 5 with Contenders being the pinnacle.

Out of his price range. SpX is the next best option for approximately 5k unless you're looking at a low grade specimen. Might not be as popular as the SPA, but it's never lost value over time either.

Op, if you dont know someone personally that is skilled in card review, then i would suggest asking the board here for any purchases youre thinking of making. Make sure to take good pics, so the skilled eyes in this board can take an objective look.
Theres more than a few of us who have been collecting Brady rcs for years and have examples to reference, etc..
Other than the clear and present dangers that this involves, I still think Brady rc cards are a lock if you want to invest in cardboard.

Yep. Brady RCs may be #1 most altered cards.
If you're investing in slabbed cardboard, you're investing in the holder as much as you are the card. Every dollar in value difference between raw and graded copies is an investment in the grade and the grading company, not the card.

I’d go with the highest grade SPA you can get. If $5000 can say for example get you a PSA 7, at least you know if probably wasn’t altered because if it was altered, you’d see it in a PSA 10 slab. Plus, to me, it being a lower grade doesn’t take away how nice of a card it is all that much. Just like how I’d take any PSA graded Honus Wagner T-206 just because it’s such an iconic/valuable card. Just owning an SP Authentic Brady RC is pretty sweet. Probably his most iconic rookie card, and it should only go up in price in the long run because it’s his most desired base rookie card. And $5k can get a relatively high grade of the card. Not Gem mint or mint, but still pretty nice.

you're probably right, but i just don't like the SPX rookie, never have. something about it.
the SP Authentic always stuck out to me. it's a beautiful, yet very simple card.
other than that, Momentum, UD Graded, E-X, Rookies and Stars, Donruss, and even Vanguard have stood out to me more than SPX. but that's me, i'm weird i guess.

In my opinion, it is not the best time to invest in Brady, and I'm sure many on here will disagree. However, his career is at a crossroads at the moment, and I don't think he is going back to New England. I heard today he cleaned out his suite at Gillette and moved the family to Connecticut. What happens to his prices if goes to a new team and struggles? In the short term there will be downward pressure, which would open a great buying opportunity. Some will say his prices will never go down, but I have to imagine that people move some of their Brady stuff if he struggles outside of New England away from Belichick. He may be the GOAT, but his cards can still lose value. However, if you think he will retire soon (which seems unlikely) or will go elsewhere and succeed and win, now is definitely the time to buy.

I'd suggest looking at the following 2 that can be bought for around 5k or less
1) 2000 Contenders Round Auto - Mint (prefer PSA 9 if you can even find one, but BGS 9's are easier to find on eBay)
2) Fleer showcase PSA 9 - my personal favorite non auto card). PSA 9's rarely come up for sale, the last one sold for $3,750 on eBay.

if by some far fetched idea he actually does move on, there will be a major buzz in the league.
think Montana 1993 when he moved to KC. it won't hurt Brady or the market. And this isn't Peyton Manning to Denver either, this is the GOAT, like Montana.

Unless Brady does an OJ or something crazy like that, his cards are blue chippers now. They’ll never go down in value. I would say think Jordan or Mantle more than Montana.
That said, like a blue chip, you’ll never see those massive leaps any more either. If one is looking for a quick flip in a couple of years, you’re not going to see a huge return. I’d say invest elsewhere as that ship has already sailed. However, if you’re looking for a slow, steady gain over the long haul, Brady cards are about as safe as you can get. There’s no guessing about his career any more. Six rings and a boatload of persona records hold a lot of weight.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I really benefited from hearing why you chose the cards you did. I am definitely in it for the long haul. I’ve been collecting Brady specifically for the past 7 years now. I’ve just never spend $5000 before on a card and don’t want to mess it up. Since the $5000 was straight from a sale, I would consider maybe adding a little out of pocket if that could get me into and sp authentic. I may post some pictures of ones I see and get y’all a opinion on if they look suspect to trimming on not. Another card I was considering before making this post was maybe a bgs 8.5 bowman chrome refractor, again maybe by adding a little out of pocket. What are y’alls thoughts on that card long term? Thank you in advance!

I dont however put it in the same list as his contenders, spa, leaf limited etc.. because its a parallel, but a rarer one at that.
Refractors are always in demand and thats a good card to have.

BTW, i think i found the one in question.
That is definitely an older slab and serial.
Its generally believed that older slabs are "safer" especially one in which the slab is old and the csrd isnt perfect. The whole point of trimming/altering is to get a flawless grade, etc..
Im still breaking out the ruler and the loupe and giving it a really objective look depsite what i said above.
Too much info has been brought forth in the last year to trust TPG.
Im also looking into the history of the seller, asking of he graded it, or if it was bought 2nd hand, looking at worthpoint to find previous sales, etc.. all things that can be done based on the serial number.

Either your dyslexic (sarcasm) or you have quite a bit of reading to do. Because neither PSA or BGS are guaranteed now to be unaltered. You CAN'T trust any slab these days, do your due diligence, post the card here for people to look at before buying. It could save you hundreds/thousands and a PITA situation.

Some look for older slabs but the only way to know for sure be it loose or graded is to measure it and look if the card was previously FS to compare with. Be clear of one thing, because its slabbed does not mean your getting an honest card.

i know that, but you've also got to have some faith in the system too. people are skeptical about spending high dollar on raw cards because of reprints and because of trimming, so if you have a choice of $5K for a raw Brady 2000 SPA or $5K for a PSA 8, which are you taking?
that's what i'm getting it. you can't measure the card until you physically get it.

oh my gosh...if i cannot buy raw cards, and i cannot buy PSA cards because apparently everything is trimmed or fake, then what? stop buying cards?
I mean, yea, that would be a way to be 100% safe. Other options would include busting your own wax I suppose.

How does this one check out to you guys? Are the sub grades too good for corners and edges compared to surface?
Thank you again.

Its graded, which makes it legit. Just buy at random and hope it checks out, just ask oplum29 ;) :p .

Skip Brady and go Kobe, Upper Deck if you can find one.

BGS 9 looks okay to me. Again, not the best photo, but no red flags.

I'm gonna get a lot of disagreement on this, but back in the day when I was actually collecting, this is EXACTLY the type of BGS card I'd avoid unless I can physically exam the surface damage and/or imperfection that warranted such a low grade compared to the other grades.
Can the surface issues be a result of the printing process? Yes. More often than not however, any type of physical handling that would affect the surface like this would also affect either the edges and/or corners as well. This card has razer edges and corners, yet damage to the surface? Once again, unless I can physically examine the card itself, this is very suspicious to me.

The 9.5 corners looks very, very generous to me. At least that's what the photo makes it look like, especially from the back.
