Ive made a few purchases this week after a long card break and have noticed an eBay tax after each purchase??
What is this new sales tax and how much percent is it?
Is it enforced for both domestic and international purchases?
Thanks for the help!

eBay tax has been killing me all year and I buy 5k to 10k+ worth of items each month. You buy something for like 6000 and get a tax of $700+. Complete BS!

Not trying to be a jerk, but to be fair, they should’ve been collecting tax this whole time.

Its not Ebay doing it. don't know why you call it Ebay tax. The states are wanting their share of sales tax they have been missing out on for years. IN reality you have always been required to pay sales tax to your state on online purchases, technology has caught up and the states are now able to collect it. It will not be long before Paypal is forced to charge sales tax on items paid for through their service off Ebay as well.

Yeah it sucks. My buying on ebay has slowed considerably because of the tax. I know the good ole days of ebay was gone along time ago, but this tax thing sure doesnt help it. The world's ending piece by piece and many dont even know it.

If you are buying to resell, you can provide ebay with proof of reseller's tax exemption to have it removed. I say this, and I still need to do it myself

Why blame ebay? Its not them. Its the buyers state mandating it. Some buyers have been having to pay it since 2018.

I think it has more to do with the type of transaction. When you go to a garage sale do you collect tax? No. You can look at ebay as a garage sale for most people. Obviously I agree that a business on ebay doing large volume is an internet business and should collect tax. But if you find something in your basement that I want, why do they need to tax my money again?

Some sales even garage sales are technically supposed to collect sales tax. Here if you have more than 2 sales a year you are expected to have a business license. Tax collectors are showing up at flea markets and trade shows on a regular basis now. To set up at most flea markets even for one time here you have to provide or apply for a tax ID.
The government makes no distinction between a basement seller and a business in that regards the same as the IRS does not. They see the sale and they want their cut does not matter if it was already taxed when new or not to them. Pawn shops require sales tax as do thrift stores and used car dealers. So that really does not matter in their eyes.
Would you rather Ebay collect it though than you having to fill out the paperwork and pay it yourself annually?
As a seller I did not notice any difference in sales due to it last year. As a buyer I just figure the tax into my bid or offer, not that difficult.

Blame your state government for not spending its money wisely.

No way the IRS has enough man power to show up at shows. As you stated by bidding lower, it’s a lose/lose for everyone. Sucks but that’s life.

Irs is different from state agencies. The state agencies have been doing it in some places for years. IRS has nothing to do with state sales tax

I finally did this and afterwards I felt kind of dumb for not doing it right away. I had to fill out 2 forms that took about 3 minutes and it took them 2 days to approve it.

Use Tax has always existed... you chose to not pay it... which is fine but it isn’t new

So all you have to do is fill out a form saying you buy to sell and you don’t have to pay the taxes?

You still owe the taxes on items you buy from EVERY online store. Soon enough every online site will charge taxes. Ebay just made the smart business decision to do it first. And not smart to admit you dont pay taxes on a site teeming with FBI and IRS agents

I registered for a tax ID with the state of Minnesota last year because I do a lot of reselling along with another job. I then filled out the proper paper work and within a couple days I was all set up to be tax free. And i'm now also not supposed to use my ebay account for anything that won't be resold, the email I received said any personal purchases need to be used with a different account.

You've always had to pay it - just ask the IRS.

This is not the IRS. They dont have anything to do with sales tax. However you are correct buyers have always had to pay sales tax on items they purchase online just no way to enforce it.
